A puff piece at the Los Angeles Times about Rathergate goes on and on about Dan Rather’s integrity and ethics, then reveals that CBS News is still planning to stonewall: Rather Rides Out Latest Partisan Storm.

In the week since the Sept. 8 report on the newsmagazine “60 Minutes,” Rather has twice gone on the air to defend his reporting and the documents, which critics have argued couldn’t have been produced by the typewriter technology commonly in use at the time. Tuesday, CBS News executives were preparing yet another rebuttal, expected to be released today.

At this point, the question must be: why is CBS News continuing to defend these obviously forged memos, even as their credibility suffers enormous damage and most of the mainstream media turns against them?

Answer: they are hiding something very important.
