 RetweetPresident Questions CBS Memos

Sat, Sep 18, 2004 at 12:47:42 pm PDT

President Bush is in it now: Bush Raises Questions About CBS Documents.

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine (Reuters) - President Bush questioned the authenticity of documents aired by CBS News that said he received special treatment during his Vietnam-era service in the National Guard, according to a Bush interview published on Saturday.

“There are a lot of questions about the documents and they need to be answered,” Bush told the Union Leader newspaper of Manchester, New Hampshire, after a week in which some experts questioned whether the documents had been fabricated by those seeking to damage Bush in his re-election race.

“I think what needs to happen is people need to take a look at the documents, how they were created, and let the truth come out,” Bush added.

With respect to comments made here and elsewhere to similarities between Dan Rather and the fictional Howard Biel and remembering how Howard ended in "Network", I am curious as to which two possibilities of events are occuring right now at CBS:

1) Dan is getting a pat down for weapons before going on the air,

or

2) Somebody is leaving a little something in his anchor desk along with little notes hinting about how "it would be good for ratings during such a tough time".

Just curious .

From WSJ Opinion Journal reader responses. Talks about Dan hanging himself with the docs.

"The more I hear of this story, the more I am reminded of the following. In the Bible in the book of Esther, there is a story about a guy named Haman who is jealous of one certain Mordecai because the latter is a favorite of the king. Haman makes up a scheme to zap Mordecai, and is so confident it will go his way that he builds a gallows upon which he plans for Mordecai to take a swing. Well, as the story ends, it is Haman who takes a test ride upon the gallows which he himself had built for another."

Now with old Dannyboy on the ropes it is time to move in for the kill. Bush should show no mercy and attack See BS like he did Saddam! Go George go.

If the president of the US publicly calls danny on the carpet wouldn't See BS be forced to respond? Well of course they wont but it sure will be fun to watch. He should call a press conference and go on the offensive. Blame the Kerryakis campaign Kerryakis will be stuck, his handlers wont dare let him anywhere near a reporter let alone a press conference because he is incapable of making any sense. The debates should be fun, Bush is no Tony Blair but he is going to look like a frigen genius next to Kerryakis.

Have you guys heard of the Phoenix project?

Within this site plan, the Yamasaki Twin Towers return, with several enhancements and modifications over the originals. The Twin Towers of the New Millennium would differ from their predecessors in the following ways:

They would each consist of 112 floors with a 12-foot floor-to-floor height. (Up to 14-foot floor-to-floor height is being considered with possible changes in building height.)

The 1,388-foot tall North Tower (Tower 1) would feature a 500-foot mast for communication transmissions, which is a 140-foot increase in height. At 1,888 feet, the North Tower would qualify as the World's Tallest Building. Windows on the World would be featured near its uppermost floors.

The South Tower (Tower 2) would be 1382 feet tall, featuring indoor and outdoor observatory decks. Both Towers would retain the same dimensions about their base: 210 feet per side (exterior).

They would be a tube-within-a-tube design. The exterior skin would feature columns two-feet square spaced 4 feet 8 13/16 inches apart, resulting in a much stronger design (5 times minimum), while permitting larger windows admitting more natural sunlight into the space. The core would feature the same columns as the exterior skin, and its walls would be of reinforced concrete.

Fireproofing will be of improved technologies rather than the spray-on coatings used previously. Elevators would be of fireproof design, and the towers would have advanced fire-fighting systems.

Both buildings would have six stairwells rather than four. The stairwells would contain sensors which indicate if they have been breached in any way. The stairwells would also be wider than the originals.

The current site plan calls for the hotel space to be located mid-rise within one of the Twin Towers resulting in a highly marketable sky hotel. Another possibility is to grant the Port Authority a residential variance and locate luxury apartments within the upper floors of one or both buildings.

Apparently, though the contract for rebuilding the WTC was awarded to the freedom tower group, no one has stepped up to fund it. This architect and his group is trying to get this proposal approved. I don't know about people here but I oppose the "Freedom tower," it's nothing but a capitulation to the islamo-fascists. I support the erection of bigger twin towers and am doing everything I can to help this group.

Howard Beale fought for honesty in Network. He even pointed out conflicts of intrests such as when he mentions that the Arabs would be buying a large American company (I forgot which one he mentions). He also said that the tube "is the greatest propaganda force on the whole God Forsaken planet..."

Totally opposite from Dan Rather who can't be as stupid as he looks by standing by this train wreck. Also, CBS is attempting to shape history by introducing lies to the media stream, just as Network (1976) predicted .

To Felipe -- the biggest iconic marker of the American Revolution is a bronze marker 8 foot off the ground at 44th and Vandy, commemmorating the hanging of Nathan Hale who was executed within a mile from that spot. Almost a quarter of the action of the American Revolution took place within the five boroughs (alright maybe a tenth) -- Cemeteries are not allowed on the island of Manhattan, except for the quarter acre at Trinity Church -- Lower Manhattan is the center of the world-- and no large part of it should be turned into a funeral service.

I agree!! Bring back the Twin Towers!! -- dump Libeskind and the Freedom? Tower.

You should make the server go down now and then. I had to go mooching around elsewhere. Hope you like some of these bits I found.
Bush hinted he was aware of memogate(how could he not be) when he was in
Charlotte.

"One of the interesting things about a changing economy is that our workers are more productive than ever before. That means instead of using a hoe, you use a backhoe. Or instead of using, you know, a regular old standard typewriter, you use a computer. In other words, that's an example of becoming more productive." (Applause.)

Here's another parody. Bible gate.

And here's CBS's guidelines for responsible journalism.

Particularly interesting today are pages 37A and B, "Identification of News Sources."

Though the section is dated October 15, 1981, it begins: "Recently the credibility of news organizations has been tarnished by the abuses of a few reporters who, while claiming to rely on anonymous sources, were fabricating stories. Quite reasonably, these incidents have led to discussion by the public and journalists of the practice of using anonymous sources."

It goes on to a section on page 37B headed "Standards and Procedures," which says, in part: "Anonymous sources should be used only when it is determined (1) that there is no other practicable way to obtain and report the information; (2) that the information is factual and of sufficient newsworthiness to warrant its use despite the fact that we cannot disclose its source; and (3) that the source and his information are highly reliable in the particular instance."

There is more, including this: "Where the use of an anonymous source is necessary, as much information as possible about the nature [underlined] of the source should be provided to the audience, assuming, of course, that this information would not lead to disclosure of the source. Where the source may have a vested interest in the matter to be reported, it is especially important that information be provided as to the nature and/or motivation of the source."

72 Kalle (kafir forever)  Sat, Sep 18, 2004 12:35:33pm

Could Bush have an inkling of who the source of the forgeries is, as well as who was in the chain of transmission to cBS? He has ignored the Old Media so far, why would he acknowledge them -- if not to help drive a stake through their vicious heart? the stake which Rather so obligingly provided.

73 jdwill  Sat, Sep 18, 2004 12:35:34pm
The President said he does not intend to send “mixed signals” to the rest of the world about Iraq.
“If the Iraqis hear mixed signals from the United States, they will become fearful,” he said. “If the enemy hears mixed signals from the United States, they will become emboldened. If our allies hear mixed signals from the United States they begin to wonder.
“That’s why it is important for me to make it very clear that we will keep our word, and that we have a vision of a peaceful world achieved through liberty.”

And that's the way it has to be. Any waffling before Islamofacists is inviting the knife to the throat.

"Bill Burkett, Democrat activist and Kerry campaign supporter, passes information to the DNC; Kerry campaign surrogate Max Cleland discusses "valuable" information with Bill Burkett; Bill Burkett talks to "senior" Kerry campaign officials; an apparently unsuspecting news organization uses faked forged memos and an interview with Ben Barnes at the same time the Democratic National Committee launched Operation Fortunate Son; and Kerry campaign manager Mary Beth Cahill was among the first to call Ben Barnes and congratulate him after his interview. The trail of connections is becoming increasingly clear."

I have been accused of being defeatist. I prefer to think that I'm being realistic. So here are my analyses and predictions.

1. President Bush's comments will lead only to a redoubling of the attacks by CBS and most of the MSM. We've already heard the basic thrust: The documents are only a small part of the story. The accusations against Bush have strong support from both disclosed and undisclosed sources. "With all due respect, Mr. Bush, answer the questions".

2. CBS will continue to stonewall.

3. The MSM is obsessed with their loss in the 2000 election. They truely believe that they are entitled to control the process. This is the basis for their unreasoning hatred of GWB. They are willing to excercise their own "Sampson Option" if necessary to replace President Bush.

4. The blogosphere simply does not have the power to win this one. The MSM will prevail and either Kerry will win or the government will be paralysed.

Fire away.

Thank you for the link.

Just as the White House was built after the British burned the Presidential Mansion in the War of 1812, and just as the Capitol building was devastated by fire and rebuilt larger and better during the Civil War, the WTC must be rebuilt bigger and stronger. To construct instead a single, substantially shorter building of empty patriotic symbolism is a severe blow to the American spirit in the face of fighting against our potential destroyers.

It's the American way.

CBS has already lost by all indications, regardless of what they were trying to accomplish. They certainly haven't helped Kerry, and it's possible they've pounded the last nail into his coffin.

Notice the widely varying polls lately? Mickey Kaus pointed out that the close ones - like the Harris poll - ended just before this scandal broke into the open. The polls that continued through last Wednesday, like Gallup, showed a huge loss for Kerry.

107 McKie of BuSab  Sat, Sep 18, 2004 1:02:29pm

The other implication of this scandal, where obviously forged documents are used to give credence to a smear campaign is more worrying. If the people behind these memos had just gone to the trouble of buying an army surplus 1970s typewriter, then CBS would never give an inch on their veracity. It seems that to CBS and all democratic supporters, if it looked like it was possible that they were genuine, and it fitted their prejudices, then they must be authentic. When and if the full story comes out it will be interesting to see if CBS even tried to follow a chain of evidence back to an office in TANG.

It would give me great pleasure to see Rather have to walk. I worry though if Bush or the republicans take too active a role in this drama, some ill informed swing voters will swallow the inevitable spin that will come from the liberal media that he was sacked for 'standing up to Bush.'

Hello. Today is Monday, September 20, and this is Dan Rather.

Our top story. On Saturday, President Bush refused to answer questions raised by former Texas Lieutenant Governor Ben Barnes on the CBS News magazine, 60 Minutes, that he received preferential treatment to gain admission into the Texas National Guard. The president also refused to address growing speculation, raised in the 60 Minutes piece, that he failed to take a required physical and was grounded from flying as a result. President Bush skirted these serious issues by saying that he had never seen certain memos that 60 Minutes used in the segment; this reporter notes that 60 Minutes never hinted or suggested that the president had seen the memos. This reporter would agree with the President, therefore, that he had never seen them.

Notably, the President did not himself question the authenticity of the memos as certain members of the right wing press have, but he did make reference to recent events where CBS News had committed to re-double its efforts to assess the memos against recent allegations. As that process takes place, CBS will continue to pursue its investigative reporting about President Bush's National Guard service. We do not believe that the President's statements on Saturday answered any of the questions that we have raised.

Clean-up from Hurricane Ivan continues...

(I'm sure that's how he sees it - we have not yet begun to plunge the depths of Dan's social pathology - my guess is that we ain't seen nothing yet).

I like the Harry Potter reference but perhaps Danny Boy is more of a bumbler/blusterer like Cornelius Fudge than Rita Skeeter even though she is, of course, a journalist for The Daily Prophet. Fudge, circling his brooms against Dumbledore, stuttering endlessly "What?! You-Know-Who a threat?! Never!" Lord Voldemort being the wizarding world's OBL equivalent.

LGF took three years to attract an average of 35,000 unique daily visitors, with a total of 50,000 average visitors (indicating considerable multiple readers).

This past week, it has attracted from 125,000 to 200,000 unique visitors a day--with total visitors averaging 200,000 to 260,000 a day.

In other words, LGF became the equivalent of a city newspaper in reaching the public. It also achieved acceptance by national news media as an expert on this particular story affecting the presidential election.

Um, I wouldn't recommend that.

You are misinterpreting the bringing of the fei-yin slightly upwards and backwards. You should not be contracting the sphincter; that could lead to some problems, such as gastric disorders, stomach problems, hemorrhoids, and the like.

That's assuming you have actually cultivated enough chi to misdirect in such a way in the first place, of course.

I don't know about bringing back the exact Twin Towers, but Libeskind and post-modernist phony architecture should not be allowed. As you said, this is the financial and commercial heart of the world, and it should not become a giant funeral parlor.

Excellent link to the article on the skyscraper and the American spirit. I agree that the new building or buildings should not be shorter than the WTC since we're telling the terrorists that it's OK to knock us down, we'll adapt.

I don't have specific ideas for the area. I just want the area to be normal, with no special funeral parlor effects.
Actually, the best idea I saw for a memorial was a "sky garden" with all the names of the WTC victims enscribed somehow--on glass or in stone--at the top of a new building that's taller than the originals. The symbolism would be there, but the skyline would not be forever tarnish by a tragedy.

Maybe there will be other holes in our skylines. Are we going to memorialize all of them? That's what I don't like about overemphasizing the Twin Towers. The U.S.S. Arizona memorial doesn't dominate Honolulu, etc. etc.

The varied opinions, expertise, and common sense are what makes the blogosphere a winner--plus it's funny too.

Having studied the LLL very intently in the past few months, here are my conclusions (not particularly original ones):

The LLL will continue to believe the lies of the NYT, the BBC, etc. because they can't help themselves. It's their religion. Facts mean nothing. Most of them are getting old. In fact, you could even call them "reactionaries."

Bush will win because most people just aren't as close-minded as the LLL. Lucky for us.

I think the president's comments today means he is willing to take on the MSM for the remainder of the campaign. That says a lot about how comfortable the White House feels about their current strength in the campaign, the quality of the evidence of CBS's documents--and the larger matter of his service in TANG.

Enough people now know the details behind the issue for the president to make it a national political story until November.

Both this story and the Swift Boat Veterans ad campaign have together done more damage to Kerry and the Left than anything the White House could have cooked up.

Guys, if I can weigh in on this Skyscraper OT tangent, there is a big issue you have to keep in mind.

And that is occupancy. As in, re-build those towers or bigger, and exactly what companies and people are going to occupy them?

Now I can hear it, 'cause I say it myself. "I'LL work there, I'M not afraid of those bastards!" Uh huh. We're all brave.

But the question is, will YOU... sign the papers that ask 300 employees, whose livlihoods and in a sense families YOU are responsible for, not to mention the same thing about your investors and backers, to work in Towers the fascists would just LOVE to go after again?
Are you prepared to make that decision for all of those people?

I think the 'Freedom Tower' is in fact taking into account some of these economc realities, that cannot be ignored in this decision.

157 Ward Cleaver  Sat, Sep 18, 2004 6:23:39pm

Yes, I'm late chiming in, but IMHO, Bush was definitely right to wait until jumping into the fray. His hands-off, quiet approach allowed the focus of story to stay on the debunking of the forged documents, instead of being derailed by denunciations from the White House, which would have caused the MSM to figure there was something to the documents, which of course there isn't.

By the way, I just finished my first margarita. Yum.

zulubaby- a few years ago Clinton almost got arafat to sign on to the two state solution.

lester1/2jr, you are so dim. How old are you? You need to get some facts into that brain of yours. Almost got Arafat to sign? LOL What two-state solution was that? Please provide a link. What you and other tools don't realize is that Arafat has no intention of making peace with Israel. Israeli PM's come and go -- the constant is that old, stinky terrorist, Arafat.

The Palestinian ones?

163 lester1/2jr  Sun, Sep 19, 2004 10:11:08am

zulubaby- you're too cynical. Peace between israel and Palestine is possible, it's what most people on both sides want. Eventually israel is going to have to pull out of the west bank and gaza. terrorists are supposed to be voting for Kerry?

164 Geepers  Sun, Sep 19, 2004 10:14:48am
it's what most people on both sides want.

I've said this before, can anyone be this stupid?

165 zulubaby  Sun, Sep 19, 2004 10:18:10am

lester1/2jr, I know it doesn't stop you from opening your mouth but you really don't have the faintest idea.

166 zulubaby  Sun, Sep 19, 2004 10:19:22am

Geepers, he's so stupid that I keep wondering if he's just messing with us to try and get a reaction. Surely nobody is that dim?

167 lester1/2jr  Sun, Sep 19, 2004 10:22:37am

It's hard to get counter arguments here, just name calling. I feel like Ann Coulter

168 zulubaby  Sun, Sep 19, 2004 10:26:02am

What are you "arguing"? I can't make sense of the crap that you post. You don't know what you're talking about. Go read up on things a bit and come back when you're serious about debating issues.

169 lester1/2jr  Sun, Sep 19, 2004 10:28:15am

zulubaby- the guy who runs this board is making money off of ZOG. You're not. So why promote it?

170 zulubaby  Sun, Sep 19, 2004 10:29:02am

lester1/2jr, what?

171 lester1/2jr  Sun, Sep 19, 2004 10:35:11am

I'm saying what did the far right of Israel do for you? Besides bring us all closer to apocalypse? These Likud guys want war not peace

172 zulubaby  Sun, Sep 19, 2004 10:36:45am
Besides bring us all closer to apocalypse?

Your stupidity is dangerous. Now fuck off.

173 Geepers  Sun, Sep 19, 2004 10:39:00am

Not to worry everyone.

A clue bat large enough to knock some sense into lester1/2jr is on the way.

174 zulubaby  Sun, Sep 19, 2004 10:40:22am

Geepers, LOL! Not big enough ...

175 lester1/2jr  Sun, Sep 19, 2004 10:41:34am

Lazy. You guys would make great marxist thought cops

176 zulubaby  Sun, Sep 19, 2004 10:42:48am

Now we're fascists. I thought we were Nazis! Make up your mind already.

the guy who runs this board is making money off of ZOG.

"ZOG?" Uh oh. You've passed the point of no-return now.

178 lester1/2jr  Tue, Sep 21, 2004 7:51:09am

freedomsound- it stands for "Zionist Occupation Government"

179 Geepers  Tue, Sep 21, 2004 7:55:34am

180 lester1/2jr  Tue, Sep 21, 2004 10:18:06am

geepers- are you also freedomsound? NO wonder this site gets so many hits. It's all the same people

181 Geepers  Tue, Sep 21, 2004 10:29:51am

lester1/2jr,

A simple LGF search shows that freedomsound has posted into over 700 different threads and has been leaving cogent and informative comments at LGF for over two years.

What's your contribution? Accusing Charles of profiting off the ZOG?

And you wonder why we laugh?

182 lester1/2jr  Tue, Sep 21, 2004 10:49:11am

that's better than anything you've ever said. "Kerry is a liar blah blah blah " "Hey so and so good to see you back at the board" yeah everyones waiting to see what geepers will say next. Get of Charles dick, you blogger geek

183 Geepers  Tue, Sep 21, 2004 10:52:14am

That was pretty incoherent.

184 lester1/2jr  Tue, Sep 21, 2004 11:04:35am
