Mainstream Media Smear Continues

Howard Witt at the Chicago Tribune published a story about Rathergate today with the headline: True or false: Blogs always tell it straight. It’s not the worst article I’ve seen about the scandal, he quotes me accurately, and the headline is more than fair, although the article also indulges in the “lurking conservatives” smear—as if the Chicago Tribune has any standing to complain about bias.

But somehow in the republication of Witt’s article at the Billings Gazette, the headline was rewritten to convey the exact opposite message: Readers’ trust in bloggers in question: Internet critics of CBS turn out to have Republican ties.
