JERUSALEM (AFP) - Ten Israelis were wounded after a large explosion in a tunnel dug by Palestinian militants near the Rafah border crossing between the southern Gaza Strip and Egypt, military sources said.
Several ambulances rushed to the scene of the blast while initial reports said that Israelis and Palestinians could be trapped inside the tunnel.
The armed wing of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas and the Fatah Hawks, an armed group linked to the mainstream Fatah movement, claimed responsibility for the attack on what it called an Israeli military post.
The groups said that their fighters had packed 1.5 tonnes of explosives into the tunnel during a “suicide mission”.
They also pledged to continue carrying out such attacks “until we have kicked the occupiers out of our land.”

A Hamas official said 1.5 tons of explosives were set off in the blast.
Abu Majad said the explosives-filled tunnel was 250 yards long. He said the attack was retaliation for what he called “the assassination” of Yasser Arafat, who died Nov. 11 in a French hospital. Some Palestinians charge he was poisoned by Israel.
