Setting the tone for the debate between Richard Perle and Howard Dean, a protester threw a shoe at Perle and screamed obscenities.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Howard Dean, the newly minted leader of the Democratic Party, and former Pentagon adviser Richard Perle made clear their opposing views on the war in Iraq during a debate marred by a protester who tossed a shoe at Perle.

Perle had just started his comments Thursday when a protester threw a shoe at him before being dragged away, screaming, “Liar! Liar!”

Other accounts reveal that he wasn’t just screaming “Liar! Liar!”; in fact, he used the profane word for a person who has sexual relations with a maternal parent. Gasp.

Howard Dean revealed again his impressive grasp of foreign policy (yes, I’m being sarcastic):

“Defense is a lot broader than swaggering around saying you’re going to kick Saddam’s butt,” Dean said Thursday, drawing cheers from the crowd in this city that overwhelmingly voted Democratic last November.

UPDATE at 2/18/05 10:47:27 am:

Video excerpts of the debate, including the shoe-tossing fool.

Howard Dean accused Perle (and the administration) of ignoring North Korea and Iran—which he identified as greater threats—to go after “the low-hanging fruit” in Iraq.

They never seem to get tired of spouting this risible nonsense—as if anyone believes Dean and his loony constituency would have backed wars against North Korea and Iran.
