About That Spanish Fatwa

A Muslim group in al-Andalus (currently called “Spain”) issued a fatwa today against Osama bin Laden.

MADRID, Spain—Muslim clerics in Spain issued what they called the world’s first fatwa, or Islamic edict, against Usama bin Laden on Thursday, the first anniversary of the Madrid train bombings, calling him an apostate and urging others of their faith to denounce the Al Qaeda leader.

The ruling was issued by the Islamic Commission of Spain, the main body representing the country’s 1 million-member Muslim community. The commission represents 200 or so mostly Sunni mosques, or about 70 percent of all mosques in Spain.

Only took them three and a half years.

The Associated Press doesn’t tell you this in the article linked above, but the Islamic Commission of Spain also thanked Spain for caving in after the Madrid train bombings, instead of behaving like the Cowboy Chimp Hitler.

The Commission has also drawn up a document designed to ‘thank the Spanish people and the government for their attitude towards Muslims’ since last March 11, in particular for not taking ‘disproportionate’ measures similar to those which the Sept 11 attacks sparked in the US.

When you read an article like the one above from the Associated Press it’s always a good idea to search other news sources, because 90% of the time there’s a revealing bit of info left out.

 Frank says:

Mr Zappa, I am astounded at the courtesy and soft voiced nature of the comments of my friend, the Senator from Tennessee. I can only say that I find your statement to be boorish, incredibly and insensitively insulting to the people who were here previously, that you could manage to give the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States a bad name, if I felt you had the slightest understanding of it, which I do not. -- - Senator Slade Gorton
