Ayaan Hirsi Ali on ‘60 Minutes’
Tonight on CBS 60 Minutes, Dutch MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali will be featured in a segment on her film Submission, the murder of the film’s director Theo Van Gogh, and the death threats from Muslims that have forced Hirsi Ali into hiding: Slaughter And ‘Submission.’
(CBS) A member of the Dutch parliament whose controversial film led to the murder of her collaborator has vowed to make a sequel, despite threats against her own life. Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s film, “Submission,” has offended Muslims worldwide, especially those living in the Netherlands, where it first appeared on television last August. …
“By not making ‘Submission Part II,’ I would only be helping terrorists believe that if they use violence, they are rewarded with what they want,” she tells Morley Safer.
Hirsi Ali was born in Somalia and turned away from Islam and an arranged marriage when she was a young woman. She immigrated to the Netherlands, and after attending university, she was elected to Parliament. “[Mohammed, the Prophet] has said a few things that are not compatible with democracy,” says Hirsi Ali.
And the Dutch democracy in the Netherlands may be too tolerant of Islamic radicalism, according to Hirsi Ali. She wrote “Submission” to protest what she says is abuse of women in her adopted country. “My accusation towards the Dutch society was ‘You think you are tolerant, but if you look behind those curtains in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, there are women who are abused,’” she tells Safer.
“There are women who are taken to Morocco and Turkey and are killed there,” says Hirsi Ali, referring to women who stray from the Islamic faith and are killed to uphold a family’s honor.
And note this conspiratorial statement from a Dutch Muslim leader, accusing Hirsi Ali of “a hidden agenda:”
Many in the Muslim community are offended by Hirsi Ali’s critique of Islam and are not surprised that this film led to violence. Nabil Marmouch, a Muslim political leader, told Safer, “You cannot emancipate women by insulting them, unless of course, that is your hidden agenda, to insult them and to create what has happened here in the Netherlands.”
