Cycle of Violence: Back on the Horse

Today’s ride: 51.1 miles, from one end of the sunny bike path to the other, at a nice steady upper aerobic pace most of the way—except through the Hermosa Strand, where they’ve instituted a fascist 8 mph speed limit that I found extremely humiliating. (Although it does help with girl-watching. And in my learned opinion, that’s one of the best areas for girl-watching in the continental US. Notice how I exclude Hawaii.)

Apart from the extreme humiliation I felt pretty good after Tuesday’s crash, with no lingering pain. It’s true that if you’re a serious cyclist, you’re going to crash sometimes. But after a few painful lessons, you learn how to fall so that you don’t make things worse. Lesson #1: tuck in your arms. Don’t try to put your hands out to break the fall, or you may end up breaking your wrists or collar bone.
