 RetweetGoogle News At It Again

Mon, Jun 13, 2005 at 10:44:03 am PDT

Accompanied by a photo of Dick Cheney from Al Jazeera, here’s a current featured headline at Google News: USVP Cheney Says Torture Facility Will Stay Open. (Hat tip: Mike.)

A screenshot:

Interestingly, if you click through to the article at DailyIndia.com, you find their headline uses the word “alleged:” U.S. V.P. Cheney Says Alleged Torture Facility Will Stay Open.

The page title also contains “alleged.”

I wonder how that word got dropped from Google’s headline?

Close Gitmo!
We could use the guns in Iraq/Afghanastan. Bulldoze the whole thing - just don't move the prisoners!

3 Nigella  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 8:48:29am

Yes, For some reason in the last month there has been this all out campaign to close Gitmo. I don't know why they would want to do that as they would lose all the great"news" stories of torture, and koran abuse they spew in their articles.

4 amir  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 8:48:52am
I wonder how that word got dropped from Google’s headline?

You seem to be asking a rhetorical question, but how did the word get dropped. Aren't google headlines computer generated?
How does googlenews work?

/asking a serious question.

5 Rancher  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 8:50:09am

Outrage of the day. Gitmo serves us well and it's not going to close. What would closing it accomplish? The techniques we use for interrogation aren't going to change so what’s the point? Yet idiot politicians will continue to call for it.

6 winry-chan  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 8:50:44am

That's a lie. He didn't say that--he said "there were no plans to close the facility." And then Scott McClellan said that that iwas concievable Gitmo might be closed someday.
Sheesh--i hate those guys.

7 FrauBudgie  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 8:51:00am

We cannot afford to hand insurgents, Al Quada, and US Dems this propaganda victory; not can we gratify members of the irresponsible press.

Believe me ... closing Gitmo will do nothing ... because what the press is after is to find that Rummy called up a prison guard and personally instructed him/her to abuse prisoners. And, they're not going to stop because the real goal here is for some reporter to get to be Woodward and Bernstein.

And .. because the US Dems think that if the public feels vaguely about Republican handling of the war and prisoners ... they're more likely to vote Democrat.

That's how they did a number on the public during the Nam years ... and they dying to do it again.

10 KingKenrod  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 8:54:07am

The headline comes from dailyindia.com's "recent News" feeds, which have the word "alleged" dropped. So I don't think Google did this. But Google ought to watch their ass regurgitating third world tripe like this..."Alleged child molester Michael Jackson" is a lot differnt than "child molester Michael Jackson", see?

That’s right they wont be happy until they have achieved their true goal: the Islamic conquest of the world. Meanwhile thank the Dems for continued appeasement they would rather see the Muslims take over than the Republicans win.

17 Nigella  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 8:57:20am

I agree that closing gitmo would give the enemy a victory. I'm also tired of these pundits on T.V. saying the President needs to go on air and explain what he is doing at Gitmo and the War on Terror. He does do that and the msm and even some of the "Conservatives " twist the words. The news conferences are particularly apalling. The questions asked of the President are incredible. Why bother?

They OBVIOUSLY had to drop one word... and it was either Alleged or Torture.

we know the facility is there, so it can't be an "Alleged Facility"

but we KNOW there's torture there, so its a Torture Facility..

Easy- "alleged" is a code word used only for Dumbocraps, hence "alleged pervert Bill Clinton", etc.

27 Studsup  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 9:03:09am

The LLL and the MSM are deperate for anything that can be used to embarrass the President and damage the nation. They will stick with this one everyday right through the next Presidential election. By repeating the torture lies enough, people will accept it as fact. The MSM and the DNC know this and will betray the nation to our enemies just to seize power in the next election. Google has show its pro-LLL/DNC bias repeatedly.

28 JammieWearingFool  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 9:05:23am

How about we close Gitmo and ship these poor tortured souls up to Google headquarters?

Just airdop them on the grounds, defiled Korans and all, and let them have at it. Let's see how those sniveling little shits act then.

Now that's reality TV I'd like to see.

29 Nigella  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 9:05:38am

#27 has hit the nail right on the head. Its' an old cliche, but true. The msm doesn't care how many Americans die as long as they can re-claim the Presidency and Congress.

30 Megan  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 9:06:22am

In other news, genocide and rape being committed by Muslims are still occuring in Sudan, terrorism against Israelis by Muslims is still occurring, hate crimes against Jews continue being committed in Europe by unassimilated Muslims, the rape rate in European countries is still higher than ususal because of unassimilated Muslims, and Muslims still plan to terrorize Americans. But that's not as bad as puppet show and Christina Aguilera music.

31 Solomon X  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 9:06:35am

What, the MSM is pushing islamist propaganda? Just view the current sidebar to see contributions from Reuters and the Associated Press:

Palestinian Authority 'won't disarm militants' By Mohammed Assadi

The Palestinian Authority will not disarm militants until Israel ends its occupation of the West Bank and Gaza as stated in a U.S.-backed peace plan, Foreign Minister Nasser al-Kidwa said on Monday.
"Under international law, the Palestinian people have the right to resist this occupation and defend themselves," Kidwa, the former Palestinian envoy to the United Nations

Got that? The "roadmap" states that the arabs don't have to disarm terrorist groups until after Israel's complete capitulation. This is supported by "international law" as well.

And for the AP:

Palestinian Groups: Israel Violated Truce By IBRAHIM BARZAK

Islamic militants Monday renewed threats to call off a cease-fire but said they would continue to observe the shaky truce despite a recent flare-up in fighting with Israeli troops.

The article never mentions what Israel did to "violate" the "truce". Nevertheless, the terrorists are portrayed as the ones keeping the "truce" alive with their tolerance and patience. The stage is also set to blame Israel for the eventual breakdown of the "truce".

A collapse in the 4-month-old truce would be a major setback for Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, who hopes to restart peace talks with Israel. The Israelis have said there can be no peace talks until Abbas takes tougher steps toward reining in militants.

Abbas the peacemaker. Israel the warmonger, making demands that are clearly not supported by the "roadmap" (see Reuters article above).

These wire stories will be run in probably dozens if not hundreds of newspapers and websites in the next 24 hours in the US. Add to that the BBC, CBC, AFP, and Al Jizz propaganda machines, and it is no wonder why so many in this world sympathize with a group of head-chopping fascists.

I was watching Fox news when this speech came on. I quickly switched to the Communist News Network (CNN) to see how they covered it. When Cheney started giving out the names of the AL Queda that were released already and ended up fighing against and killing our guys after release and the circumstances in which they were encountered again, CNN went to their Anchor to tell us how bad GITMO was and then they went to a commercial.

"Nothing to see here. Move along."
"These aren't the terrorists your looking for."

Effing traitorous bastards!

35 Eddie Haskell  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 9:17:47am

41 JammieWearingFool  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 9:21:15am

This should be the real headline using both Google-speak and Google-thought:

Hey this is good news. These terrorists don't think we'll touch them. Perhaps someone needs to tell them that the rules have changed.

Yo, terrorists, the US operates a torture facility. We don't put losers like Ted Kennedy or that guy in front of the White House screaming that Bush wants to steal our S.S. retirement. No, the torture facility is reserved for you guys!

That's right. You better make sure you can blow yourselves into a million pieces before we get our hands on you and dump you in a torture cell in Guantanamo.

Then you'll find out that the only virgin around is You! (but you won't be a virgin for long) Then when were done with you, were going to dump you in a country that claims to have invented torture.

45 jesusland joe  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 9:23:16am

Until every Muslim government and organization apologizes to the people of the World for the barbaric behavior of a goodly percentage of their people, no one owes them an apology for anything.

When I see how GOOD their prisoners are treated by us as opposed to how our prisoners are treated by them, it truly sickens me that these people are being given the moral high ground by the press.

Truly, the MSM press is now the worst enemy of this country, even more so than the Islamofascists and their allies.

46 Charles  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 9:23:17am

A possibility, however, is that Google cached an earlier version of the headline, which was subsequently changed when someone at DailyIndia.com noticed the hits from Google and got anxious.

Google: the even-handed news aggregator:

World Socialist Web Site news links on Google right now.

They'll use Communists as a source, but not LGF.

ON THE OTHER HAND, they DO use (oddly) an anti-Democratic Party blog called

Dummocrats

It's just a lame blog that is openly partisan against the Democratic Party, much more so than LGF.

If anything proves that GoogleNews has a bias specifically against LGF, these two links prove it.

Google censors anti-Clinton book ads

Google Censors Ads for Anti-Clinton Book

Google bans previously approved ads for book about the Clintons' abuse of power but leaves anti-Bush ads intact. The CEO's support of Hillary Clinton is questioned as a factor.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) June 13, 2005 -- Popular search engine Google reversed course late last week and banned a previously approved online ad campaign for a new book that documents abuses of power by Bill and Hillary Clinton. The surprise move prompted the book's author and publishing house to publicly question if the politics of Google’s CEO - a financial backer of Hillary Clinton - played a role in this change of course.

“Google's decision to reverse its prior approval and shut down this banner ad campaign reeks of political bias,” charges Candice E. Jackson, the author of “Their Lives: The Women Targeted by the Clinton Machine” (World Ahead Publishing; hardcover: $25.95; ISBN 0974670138). “The company's liberal leanings are pretty widely known, but this example of blatant editorial censorship is still shocking.”

And the SF Chronicle is even worse than GoogleNews at times.

For example, right now on the SF Chronicle front page there is a headline that says

Quran's Message Of Peace

that links to THIS article about a Berkeley Muslim scholar with this jaw-dropping quote:

There are a certain number of Muslims who are taking their violent agenda and giving it a mask that is Islamic, but this is not what Islam is. I defy anyone to bring me one verse in the Quran that advocates violence. The Quran talks about fighting and other things, but always in self-defense, and even the verses that mention fighting say that peace is the way to go.

I use a cable modem to connect to the Net -- extremely fast, and I think better than DSL. Recently, I also went wireless with an Apple Airport Express, which is really great for "roving Web surfing", but I have noticed that about 10% of the time I have to click a link more than once for the connection to go through. Not sure what the deal is with that. But I think it's the wireless network's fault, not the cable modem.

I'd recommend investigating the cable route.

I just heard Charles Rangel on NPR say, in effect, that every American soldier has to worry about how he would be treated if captured by the enemy because of how the enemy perceives we treat them when captured.

(1) What difference does it make how we actually treat them, when their "perception" is that we "torture" detainees?

(2) And whose fault is that? Newsweak, Time, New York Times, Amnesty International, Jimmy Carter who keep claiming, CONTRARY TO FACT, that we "torture" detainees.

(3) American soldiers don't have to worry about how they'll be treated --- they KNOW how they'll be treated. They'll be beheaded, burned alive, dismembered, and hung from bridges.

This crap is infuriating.

BTW, their 2Wire wireless modem/router is an excellent, excellent product. And, I don't see Comcast offering their own wireless cable modem yet.

My SBC phone service is down right now, too (though dsl is obviously still working to some extent).
It rained recently.
If it rains for 10 minutes here in Lubbock, all kinds of things break down, intersections flood, and the yokels swarm into the streets and supermarkets out of apparent fear that the creek will rise and cut us off from the outside world for weeks at a time.

You might look into Covad. They are the providers that most DSL resellers (Verizon, Yahoo, etc.) resell from. They are attempting to bypass their business market and sell direct as of late. However, in your situation, you sound too far away from the central switch to even get DSL. Satellite is a possibility but not always satsfactory (slow, erratic in snow).

I'm completely on board with the anti-Google News comments (do we really need to go to al-jazeera to find a picture of our Veep?!?), but don't lump google and google news together.

Contrary to some of the comments, google does add value, and does it quite well. They doctor their results less than any other corporate portal, and have come up with genuine innovations in the field. There's a reason their stock price is so high (have you compared maps.google.com to yahoo's pathetic version?).

Again, down with google news, but let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Tremendous run on flashlight batteries, bottled water and the like. Friend of mine once said (as a real Nor'Easter Blizzard - which is not a joke, just the reactions to it-

99 Shiplord Kirel  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 10:32:34am

Back on track:

There is an affinity between the institutional media culture and Islam.
Both are based on authority and emotion and are therefore fundamentally opposed to the post-Enlightenment values that have prevailed in the west since the 18th century.

After 40 years of media culture dominance, a large part of the US population is in open revolt against this unaccountable power.
For example, in the last election the support of media culture authority figure Michael Moore probably hurt John Kerry much more than it helped him. This possibility has not escaped the notice of certain Dem analysts, though the Party itself is more oblivious than ever to the decline of media power.
There are tentative signs that this kind of skepticism is spreading to certain parts of Asia and Europe, though the EU heartland remains firmly in the grip of the local MSM.
The US, after all, invented the saturation media and would therefore be farther along on the learning curve than any other area.

In Islamic countries, otoh, the populace is almost infantile in it credulity toward mass media. This is an expected and reasonable outcome to the sudden introduction of mass media into what is essentially a medieval, authoritarian culture. Remember that in yesterday's report about Allah turning a blasphemer into a dog, at least two of the locals cited television reports as their source for the story and, by implication, as the authority for their belief in its veracity.

Authority and emotion are the institutional media culture's stock in trade. There is almost no other way to effectively promote a product or idea in a high-impact video/sound bite. The loss of authority would be as serious a blow as the sudden disappearance of communications satellites. Media lords realize this and they spin their message accordingly. Muslim culture opposes many specifics of the media-oriented lifestyle; but the fundamentals, authority and emotion, are the same.

Sorry if this has been pointed out already and you may have been sarcastic when you said they may have dropped the word "alleged" because they ran out of space on the headline. That could be what they come up with as a pathetic excuse- limited space on the headline. But they could have easily phrased it:
USVP Chaney: Alleged Torture Camp to stay open.
In other words, they could have dropped the word "says" rather than "alleged" without actually changing the meaning.
Then again, if space is a concern, why not use:
"Devil says, hell to stay open, Angels to be tortured".
That's what they mean.

And another way this hurts Dems? The Democratic party sees their views reflected positively on MSM, so they assume the vast majority of Americans share these views and values. The opposition is portrayed as ding bat wacko's (see West Wing and NYT's for instance).

Then when election results come in, Dems are surprised that Americans don't like gun control, abortion without restrictions or consequences, and reject the ACLU values.

While we're waiting for the Jacko verdict, I will make my first public comment on this incredible circus.

Jackson is undoubtedly a creep and he is probably a pedophile, but I think he could well be innocent in this particular case.

The prosecution has the burden of proof and its case depends entirely on the word of witnesses whose credibility is in question, to say the least. There is no physical evidence or other verifiable corroboration, it is basically a matter of their word against his.
The accused has to have the benefit of the reasonable doubt, justice cannot be served any other way. If the prosecutors can't prove their case, and I don't think they have, the creep has to go free.
It is part of a procedure that is very necessary to the existence of a free and open society.

Good line Shiplord. You said it better then me.

I first heard this concept in 2000. A commentator said that Gore may have lost because he thought everyone was for gun control. MSM portrays pro-gun people as only a handful of right wing nut cases. So naturally he assumed that by opposing 2nd amendment rights, he'd come out ahead. He didn't even carry his home state and that may be due to this.

That's nothing. A few days ago, Google News put a link to this gem on their front page from WorkersWorld (Workers.org):

Iraq resistance strong, popular anger growing

President George W. Bush’s practiced smiles and his cronies’ anxious denials can’t hide the truth: Exposures of prisoner abuse, the military recruiting crisis, the instability of Washington’s client regime in Baghdad, and especially the powerful resistance movement are slamming the U.S.-led occupation.
Inexorably, inevitably, the skein of lies holding together the occupation of Iraq is coming undone.
Resistance fighters have doubled their daily attacks since April, the Pentagon admitted on May 31. At least 77 U.S. troops were killed in May.
That is the highest number since January, when U.S.-sponsored national elections were held, Reuters reported. The Associated Press put the number of U.S. casualties for the month at 80.
Military actions by the resistance slow ed briefly after the Jan. 30 elections. That led Bush & Co. to virtually crow, “Mission accomplished,” all over again. The military brass spoke of reducing troop numbers by the end of the year—not as a move to end the occupation, but because they believed Iraq would shortly be “pacified.”
Instead, it appears the resistance had made a strategic decision: to retreat temporarily, giving the new occupation-sponsored government time to expose its true character to any Iraqis who might have harbored hopes that the election would herald the end of foreign occupation.
...

Could they be any more gleeful as they tally the number of dead American troops?

One fringe benefit of a guilty verdict in the Jacko case:

Many of the MSM on the scene report that the assembled hordes of Jackson supporters are in an ugly mood and that their wrath is directed specifically at the media. I saw one brief report in which an alarmed talking head indicated that Jacko fans were screaming obscenities and threats from the other side of a flimsy barrier just 15 feet away.
She sounded just like a war correspondent ducking a mortar barrage in Baghdad.
Media beasts will almost always exaggerate a threat to themselves if it heightens the drama, but there is always the hope slight possibility that the Jacksonites will go completely batshit and massacre the lot of them.

This whole "image war" idea is simply absurd. To Islamic countries, America has been the "great Satan," festering cesspit of infidels, pick your epithet, for decades, long LONG before even the first detainee arrived in GTMO. To say that GTMO is the cause of an "image" problem among Muslims is prime example of the false causation fallacy, also known as cum hoc ergo propter hoc, Latin for "with this, therefore because of this."

According to a recent Time magazine article, military intelligence officials at Guantanamo Bay got permission to use intensive interrogation techniques on two prisoners, including dripping water on prisoner's heads, strip-searching and making prisoners stand nude, sleep deprivation, and forcing prisoners to urinate in their pants after not allowing them to use bathroom facilities during extended interrogations.

My interpretation:

Zarqawi and his murderous thugs tortured, maimed, bound, gagged, and beheaded Americans.

How does this compare to letting them pee their pants and standing nude, not sleeping?

It's still showing up in a search of google news: USVP Cheney Says Torture Facility Will Stay Open

Amir: "You seem to be asking a rhetorical question, but how did the word get dropped. Aren't google headlines computer generated? "

They can't be computer generated. If a computer drops a word, it isn't smart enough to know which word to drop and still maintain sense to the sentence.

Someone typed the headline in... with the word "alleged" removed.

it's a foregone conclusion that Gitmo is closing down. I give it 4-5 months. Bush has already laid the groundwork, Bill Kristol is not helping mattesrs, a good fuck you to Chuck Hagel.

What a bunch of spineless bastards the republicans are turning out to be. They don't know how to fight for anything.

Sleeper Cell

No. 162 jlfintx: My thoughts exactly. When are we going to fight this war to win it? It will go on forever at this rate. And Bush is losing rating points in approval because he won't tell the truth that almost everyone knows – the terror is coming from islam and the enemy is islam. And a leader can't be a strong leader if he doesn't tell the truth. And I want to win. Most Americans want to win this war. And we can't see any victory ahead. it's murky. Its driving me nuts!

Speaking of torture and gulag in Guantanamo, maybe the Shaolin Temple should be closed : [Link: ninja-blog.blogspot.com...]

Maybe DailyIndia previously lacked "alleged" in the headline, and then later on added it to the headline, but google uses the old headline.
