 RetweetAP Finds the T Word

Mon, Jun 13, 2005 at 12:56:32 pm PDT

Kidnap and behead Westerners, or bomb schools, and the Associated Press will call you an “insurgent.” At worst, a “militant.”

But attack a dictatorial Ba’athist regime and suddenly you’re a terrorist, sans scare quotes: Report: Syria Foils Planned Terror Attacks.

Syrian forces raided a suspected terrorist hideout near the capital, killing two men, arresting a third and foiling alleged bombing plots that targeted the nation’s Justice Palace, the official news agency reported.

What happened to "freedom fighters?" "Minutemen?" I guess those apply only if you're trying to kill Americans.

5 brent  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 11:03:31am

That makes sense - only a terrorist would want to go against the peace loving Syrians.

Us imperial Americans get the insurgents, the resistance, the freedom fighters, the militia.

That makes me feel so very "evil empire".

An excellent point, Charles. In fact, this is all the evidence that anyone needs to understand the agenda of the media. I write about this here:

An abandoned U.N. building took the brunt of the fighting.

Ever notice how a UN building gets more use for hiding enemies in gunfights, more so than actually helping people in need.

Our "friends" the Saudis are constantly fighting internal "terrorists" also. Strange how these labels continually morph depending on who does the attacking and who are the victims. . .

17 Oh_dude  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 11:15:44am

Michael Jackson is an alleged male juvenile genital terrorist.

You're right! That does sound better.

18 alkmyst  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 11:15:54am

Of course they used the word "terrorist"

In the entire article, there is not one single mention of slaughtering or kidnapping Jews.

So it's perfectly ok to describe them as such.

The focus of this story should be the root causes that lead these poor, bewildered souls to attack the Justice Palace. I think it was simply a case of misunderstanding, as the Olympians of Damascus(tm) preside over the most blessed realm on Earth, a wonderful land with rivers of chocalate and children flying kites. Suffering is unknown there in that wondrous place, and there is free health-care for all. The Justice Palace itself radiates warm fuzzy thoughts of liberty and brotherhood, and all who are fortunate enough to serve the Olympians there go to work with a smile on their faces and a Sprite in their hands. Perhaps these poor misguided people should be treated with compassion, and sent to a place where they can have their consciousnesses raised about the glories and wonders of the Holy Realm of Syria.

In Syria there are to kinds of terrorism, authorized terrorism (against the west and Israel so long as there is no reprisal) and unauthorized terrorism which is terrorism not sanctioned by the authorities.

This can be an attack against the government, or when the terror sponsoring government needs some cover with the west so they can say they are fighting terror too.

The only other instance in which this can happen is when the terror group did not pay their bribe for being allowed to use Syrian terrorism to commit terror attacks.

I hope this clears up any concerns anyone has about terror attacks in Syria.

29 Fatal  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 11:26:36am

OT: Religion of Rape update:

Ban on rape victim leaving Pakistan

The Pakistan government has placed Mukhtaran Bibi, the victim of one of its most notorious rape cases, on a list of people forbidden to leave the country.

Ms Mukhtaran, hailed as a human rights heroine after a courtroom confrontation with the men who allegedly gang-raped her three years ago, had been invited to visit the US by Amnesty International.

The interior ministry confirmed that this month it placed her on the "exit control list", an infamous measure usually used to restrict the movement of political opponents.

How do convicted rapists "allegedly" rape?

Damn...I thought the word "terrorist" was only used these days to describe americans. That's the way I see it. But you know, without the american "terrorist" the world would be a lot f**king worse off. Countries are sure there fast enough with their hands in Uncle Sam's pockets when they want something, or need something...they want the US to just GIVE them everything, too. They renege on loans, and the US lets them...they allow desecration of the flag, and the US lets them...they burn effegies of Bush et al, and America lets them. The only time even the US government gets pissy is when an AMERICAN IS ACCUSED OF desecrating a Quran, or having dogs "terrorise" POW's, or having (heaven forbid) a lowly WOMAN make the bastards feel dirty or whatever...I'm sick to fucking death of the Americans being the only ones not allowed to do anything wrong, or dishonourable. We learned from the enemy about Iraqi warfare. You HAVE to meet the enemy on HIS level...and we still haven't done that. The world would scream and holler even more that we could be so monstrous as to butcher one of the POW's and brag about it. Only the Iraqis are allowed to do that sort of thing. What shite!

44 kjo  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 1:45:06pm

Yes, it is strange, isn't it? AP, Al-reuters, The NYT, WaPo, CNN, the list goes on and on...they just don't see the world the way those of us who live in flyover country do. Maybe it's because red state America isn't as "cosmopolitan", nor as highly educated, in a east or west coast sense.

We red staters tend to make judgments about right and wrong. We were brought up to believe in doing good, and avoiding, when we could, evil.

I don't think the blue state "intellectuals" think the same. They think the world is "complicated", that each issue has "many sides", they are fond of the word "nuance".

For us, John Wayne is a folk hero, for them, he's an old actor, long dead and forgotten.

We are never going to understand each other.

Not all of of Blue Staters are really blue. Remember, only a few counties in ultra-left California actually voted left in the last election. The schools in the red counties are abominable. Since these kids don't get a real education and read real books, they'll believe anything. Its easy to become defensive when you have no choice but to attend the LA Unified School District. I attended LAUSD from Kindergarten on,and believe me, indoctrination was alive and strong back in the 70's and 80's. Imagine what it is today. I am the only one of my school friends who is Conservative today!

When I attended UCLA in the late 80's I entered wanting to be an Art History major. It became clear very quickly that I would never survive. I was destined to be drummed out for very antisocial, read Conservative, views.

The classes were taught with a definite Communist bent. Fragonard, who painted women with big hats in big swings for the French Court - bad. Jean Louis David who painted the coronation of the tyrant, Napolean - good. Never was there any consideration that they were both the same in that they painted what people wanted to pay for. Ah, but art is freer today. The American taxpayer foots the bill, but has no say in the subject matter.

I actually switched to a History major. The profs were biased there too, but I could stand it better.

48 Malleus Dei  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 4:28:21pm

According to the AP's Leftist illogic, it seems that no one who opposes the U.S. or its allies can ever be labeled a "terrorist."

Go figure.

49 khamr  Mon, Jun 13, 2005 6:12:28pm

Wait, so Syria is on our side? I'm so confused. I'll just defer to the oh so sage AP journalist...riiight Do they ever look in the mirror and just laugh? Like Jim Carrey in 'Liar Liar'? ...'I've had better?"

America bad, anything else, good. Wait a minute, there's that whole love of my country and all that it stands for feeling again, what a bitch, wish I could just surrender and hate myself.

Love. The. Red. White. and. Blue.

I hear you. I am a public high school teacher in Michigan. Many of my students wind up at UM in The Peoples Republic of Ann Arbor. You should hear the stories they bring back to the red state area of Michigan!

At freshman orientation, in order to receive the pass to buy your football tickets, new students must get through "orientation".

At this "orientation", male students have to show that they are able to "deal" with homosexual come-ons. They must also say appropriate things about the need in their lives for "diversity". They are forced, in groups, to play the part of a gay student asking a straight student for a "date".

One of my former students did not want to play, he was told, "no tickets', until you do, he did.

The kid likes football. So it goes.

#46 Colt -

The one part of the story that seems credible is that the Syrian government killed a lot of people, with few if any independent witnesses. The rest of the elaborate tale looks an obvious attempt to "O.J." world opinion - "We'll get Hariri's killer if we have to search for a hundred years" sort of thing. At this point, I think they'd try anything to recover enough social respectability that their UN staff can again hope for invitations to golf with the Saudis and Egyptians. The Arab world knows they're murderous thugs, but is only publicly put off by their pathetic clumsiness.

Just how it looks to me...
