People keep emailing, asking when registration will open and why it isn’t open; I get at least 5 or 6 of these emails a day. The reason I can’t simply leave it open: our database is getting quite large, with more than 12,000 registered commenters, and I’m constrained by various server/storage/sanity issues.
It’s not because I’m trying to shut out lefties. As if. If you pay attention to our comment threads, you may have noticed more than a few lefties, ranging from the reasonably sane to the completely whacked out, who have posting privileges here.
In any case, this is a prelude to announcing that registration is now open, for a little while.

Note about registration: make sure your confirmation email doesn’t get caught by a spam filter. (The most common registration problem.)

Like Hitler, or Pol Pot, or something worse of which I cannot think (ouch), I have now closed registration. Welcome to the more than 100 new lizards-in-waiting.
