More details on the massive terrorist bombings against the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el-Sheik: 49 killed in triple Egypt resort bombing.

Forty-nine people have been killed and 136 wounded in two car bombs and another explosion in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, the governor says.

Mustafa Afifi, governor of South Sinai province, said one car bomb exploded in front of the Ghazala Hotel in Naama Bay, the site of most of the resort’s luxury hotels. Another car bomb exploded in the old market in Sharm el-Sheikh town, about six kilometres from Naama Bay. “The third explosion, in a car park at the entrance to Naama Bay, could have been a bag of explosions,” he added.

The first of the explosions occurred at around 1am (0800 AEST) in the centre of Sharm el-Sheikh.

“For the moment, we don’t know whether they were car bombs or bombs planted under parked cars,” a police source has said. “We are not ruling out the possibility of suicide bombings.”

The blasts rocked the popular Sinai resort at the peak of the summer tourist season and several foreigners were believed to be among the victims. The casualties included people from Britain, the Netherlands, Qatar, Kuwait and Egypt, but police do not yet have a complete breakdown of the nationalities of the dead and wounded. A rescue official said 17 of the dead had been burnt beyond recognition by the explosions.

According to police sources and witnesses, one of the deadliest bombs went off in a car park between the Ghazala and Moevenpick hotels in Sharm el-Sheikh’s Naama Bay area. “The side of the Ghazala hotel facing the sea was badly damaged by one of the blasts and part of it even collapsed,” Sharm el-Sheikh resident Hossam Osman said.

“There are lots of bodies covered with blood-stained white sheets around the hotel. Lots of people rushed to the scene to see what was happening but up to 600 policemen are cordoning off the area,” added Osman.

This one has all the characteristics of a “classic” Al Qaeda (or Al Qaeda-trained) operation; multiple attacks with high explosives against targets rich with vacationing infidels.
