Hurricane Katrina: Open Thread 18
Here’s another open thread for the Hurricane Katrina disaster…
Gateway Pundit discovered a video of the hurricane and storm surge smashing into Gulfport, Mississippi, taken by storm-chasers who were right in the middle of it: Hurricane Katrina Barrels into Gulfport.
Only two organizations were on the scene from day one as refugees began arriving at the Houston Astrodome: the American Red Cross and Chabad Jewish Hurricane Relief. Some photographs of the Astrodome are here: Chabad Hurricane Relief. You can donate to the Texas chapter here, or the Louisiana chapter here.
Don Singleton dug up every available official document related to the Emergency Management Plan of the city of New Orleans, to investigate the question: Who is responsible?
UPDATE at 9/4/05 7:00:38 pm:
Lance Armstrong is donating $500,000: Armstrong to Help Katrina Cancer Patients. (Hat tip: zulubaby.)
AUSTIN, Texas - Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong and his namesake cancer survivorship foundation will donate $500,000 to help cancer victims displaced by Hurricane Katrina get treatment.
Armstrong said Saturday he expects the money will be used to help transport cancer patients to hospitals and cancer centers where they can continue to get treatment. He said more money could be donated in the future.
“If you’ve started treatment and you miss a week or two weeks, it’s potentially fatal,” Armstrong said. “For me and the foundation, we just looked at that and asked not just what can we do, but how does it fit into our mission?”

And by the way, I haven’t written it, because I always think most of you already know it, but in spite of the rough-and-tumble nature of some of our comment threads in the past, I’m very proud of the overwhelming response from the lizardoid army to this disaster. Thank you.
