 RetweetGermany Releases Convicted Terrorist

Tue, Dec 20, 2005 at 9:54:19 am PST

Hizballah terrorist Mohammed Ali Hamadi, convicted in Germany of murdering US Navy diver Robert Dean Stethem aboard a hijacked airplane, has been freed. (Hat tip: Ace of Spades.)

BEIRUT - Hezbollah member Mohammed Ali Hamadi has returned to Lebanon after being secretly released in Germany, where he was serving a life sentence for the 1985 hijacking of a TWA jetliner and killing of a US navy diver, Hezbollah and Lebanese security sources said Tuesday.

Hamadi returned a few days ago, a Hezbollah source told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa in Beirut. A Lebanese security source confirmed that Hamadi entered Beirut four days ago aboard a commercial flight from Germany.

The sources did not indicate whether Hamadi stayed in Beirut after his return. He had been arrested on 13 January 1987 at Frankfurt airport after customs officials found liquid explosives in his luggage.

He was sentenced in 1989 for possession of explosives, hijacking a U.S. commercial passenger airliner in Athens to Beirut - TWA flight 847 - on 14 June 1985, beating and holding passengers aboard that flight, and murdering Robert Dean Stethem, a US Navy diver, on the same flight.

Looks like business as usual in Germany under Angela Merkel.

Commentators have speculated that Hamadi’s release may be connected to the freeing Sunday of German hostage Susanne Osthoff in Iraq. German authorities had already tried to use Hamadi as a bargaining chip in the late 1980s to secure the release of German hostages in Lebanon.

From the country who brought us the holocaust, is this any surprise they are incapable of doing the right thing? They murdered six million Jews and go about their business as usual. Why is one Muslim murderer of an American important?

Surprised? Not.

OT about those hostages ... breaking news from Debbie Schlussel ... she says:

Germany traded the freedom of Hezbollah terrorist Mohammad Ali Hamadi, who tortured and murdered Navy Diver Robert Dean Stethem, for Osthoff (a convert to Islam).
Within three days of Hamadi's release, Osthoff was released. As the French might say, "Quelle coincidence!" (What a coincidence!)

And it's yet more proof that Hezbollah is working with Al-Qaeda terrorists in Iraq. As Shia and Sunni extremists, respectively, the groups may hate each other, but they hate us more and long ago buried the hatchet to join forces, according to The New York Times.

Also, consider the fact that a German diplomat told Reuters several weeks ago that "the Geman diplomat's comment that told Reuters several weeks ago that "Osthoff's kidnappers likely wanted a ransom and that the government would not hesitate to pay."

So Germany does, in fact, negotiate with terrorists and denies justice in order to trade for hostages. Nauseating.

Archaeologist a Muslim convert

"Hostage" Susanne Osthoff is a Muslim convert.

The family of the victim are also renewing their calls for her release. Osthoff's mother on Monday issued another emotional plea to return her daughter to safety. In an interview with a German newspaper she said that her daughter was "more Iraqi than German."

Osthoff is a trained archeologist who has been doing aid work in Iraq for several years. The 43 year old convert to Islam was married to an Arab and speaks fluent Arabic.
In 2003 she made her "first humanitarian trip to Iraq."

If we aren't doing this then the War on Terror is a sham. We need to let these killers know we never forget and they can never rest.

Not to underestimate Germany's cowardice, but the US is hardly covered with glory on the incident. TWA Flight 847 was hijacked en route from Athens to Rome and forced to land in Beirut, Lebanon, where the hijackers held the plane for 17 days. They demand the release of the Kuwait 17 as well as the release of 700 fellow Shiite Muslim prisoners being held in Israeli prisons.

Immense pressure was applied on Israel to release these prisoners by the Reagan administration. It was just another example of the West caving in to terrorism.

This was the incident which made media stars out of Charles Glass and Peter Jennings of ABC News as both acted as mouthpieces of Hezbollah. Though all the media allowed itself to be used by the terrorists, ABC News set a new standard is promoting the terrorist agenda.

Tell me about it. At first, I thought the four "Christian Peacemakers" kidnapping was fake, but that this one was real. No longer. Now that I see she was a Muslim and that she was traded for a convicted terrorist, I'm becoming convinced that her kidnapping was an inside job as well, which she may have arranged herself.

Warrior Soul by Chuck Pfarrer is the autobio of a SEAL who was part of that operation. Good reading, right out of the first page, Chuck talks about a night jump from a civilain B-727, in a thunderstorm over Norfolk, on his last day in the Navy...and the book keeps the pace up.

I remember that TWA hijacking quite well. Interesting factoid, Golam-Globus, who gave us all the "American Ninja" movies, gave us a movie ("Delta Force", IIRC) which was an exact recreation of the hijacking, except for the ending, where Chuck Norris freed the remaining hostages from Beirut and killed all the Muslims.

Those filmmakers were Israeli. They made another flick called "Invasion U.S.A." where a group of terrorists giddily fired bazookas into homes on Christmas.

I remember seeing that scene and thinking "No way that could happen. No group of people on earth could possibly be so callous."

Boy was I wrong.

Speaking of quagmires, when are we going to withdraw from Germany? The Democrats are demanding that we remove our forces from Iraq, but they have only been there for a couple of years. But our troops have been occupying Germany for six decades with no end in sight.

When is Murtha going to demand we bring our boys home from this endless engagement?

Thanks for the clarification. Either way, I am sure this generation of heroes is more than up for a road trip (even if it means missing Christmas) if it means delivering long delayed justice.

My fear is either the Germans didn't tell us this was up so we lost him already or political leadership is too squeemish (I bet Rumsfeld is up for it not sure about Rice).

39 sonofsheldon  Tue, Dec 20, 2005 8:14:33am

With all of the help Islamic terror groups are receiving from western non-muslims, they'll be terrorizing for a long time to come.

You're on to something there. This exchange may very well have been a set up on the part of the German convert and her insurgent buddies. The four "Christian peace activists" made no secret of their sympathy to the terrorist cause and it'll be instructive to see if they are also exchanged for some prominent terrorists currently in a European prison.

42 Lizard by the Bay  Tue, Dec 20, 2005 8:17:04am

Not only did the Germans violate this scumbags sentence (life without parole), not only did they negotiate with terrorists, not only did they exchange one terrorists for an "Islamic convert", they violated their word and treaty with the U.S. regarding international extradition.

This guy has warrants outstanding in the U.S. and Germany was bound by treaty to extradite him here if he were ever released (despite the "life without parole" sentence he received). I guess not only is there no truth in sentencing in Germany, international treaties take a back seat to doing deals with terrorists.

Sheesh!

Excellent & too the point at Atlas Shrugs

Former CIA director Jim Woolsey (one of FDD's Distinguished Advisors) observes that the term "Islamofascist" may be "understated -- the Italian fascists were horrible, but not genocidal. 'Islamonazi' would be more accurate."

And he's thinking not only of Iran, but other variants of Militant Islamism as well -- including Saudi Wahhabism. These ideologies, Woolsey writes, have not "attained the Nazis' and Communists' death totals yet, but this is only due to lack of power, not to less murderous or less totalitarian objectives."

47 Beagle  Tue, Dec 20, 2005 8:26:19am

Someday, 'Wretchard' will be considered overly modest for claiming his blog is "history and history in the making."

If he's not a year ahead of the curve, he's got one arm behind his back.

The circumstances fueling the account by Lee Gordon of the London Telegraph has so many eerie similarities to the New York Times John Burns piece on the Golden Mosque that they fairly jump out. A team from a writer or newspaper respected by conservatives is captured on the road. The journalists are taken to a picturesque location where they are first greeted with hostility, then granted surprising liberty. A sense of shared danger bonds them with their captors. Scenes are provided to lend color. Due to a surprising coincidence, the captured journalists stumble on information every Western intelligence agency wants to know. The preparations to defend the Golden Mosque, the fate of the missing German counterterrorism agents. Then, as quickly as they were captured, they are released. Not for them is the long and slow incarceration of Terry Waite, but a hearty goodbye, encumbered only by the promise that they will tell the world the truth, on their word as Americans or Englishmen.

Fool us three times, and you've barely started.

"Delta Force" was on AMC last week - I've been wanting to see that one again for a LONG time. I remember "Invasion USA" as well - I'll have to rent that for the Christmas break. Before Islamic terrorists actually attacked America, we get movies about how rotten they are. Now, after 9/11 we get Oliver Stone, gay cowboys & "Revenge", err, I mean "Munich."

Don't get all excited:

This guy got a life sentence and he served 20 years. This happens all the time, expecially in the U.S. Otherwise, the prisons would be even more crowded than they are today.

Then again, the LGF crew probably favours the death penalty anyway. (btw, congratulations on your 1000th execution since 1977. You're still number three, behind China and Congo!)

We're all so proud of you here in Europe!

And as a side-note to the hell-we're-in-a-war-crowd:

When the towel-snapper-in-chief swaggered and lied you into this utterly useless endeavour in Iraq, most of you were probably hoping for an "inside-out" job in Bagdhad, or a "Gulf War lite" or an "Afghanistan redux" or whatever could make the presidents daddy proud, maybe dragging the Brits along, and feeling you've at least done SOMETHING against international terrorism - but hardly a word about the grand schemes of middle-eastern liberation that is on sale nowadays. Most of you held your noses and prayed that Xiao Bushi had a one-pager for his exit-strategy very, very close at hand. But lo-and-behold: Bush gave it all to the old Babylon Bitchslappers and Cheneys why-do-we-keep-on-giving-a-fuck-brigade.

And so it can all now, with three years of further screw-ups to spare - be laid at your doorstep (since you re-elected this guy): Stupid tax policies, worse budget, terrible image overseas, ridiculous disaster-management and chasing after every bogus shill from the same people directly responsible for biggest recruiting place for terrorists in the first place.

Bitching about the release of a 20-year-convict in Germany is just another sign of helplessness. High time some people start choking on their pretzel logic.

61 lawhawk  Tue, Dec 20, 2005 8:48:58am

Look here dude/dudette,

I have no problem with your admiration for God/Jesus as it is your belief and you have a great sincerity that goes along with your belief. I don't need to be preached to, at all by you, or by anyone. I have my own belief and I with that belief will not ram down my belief another person's throat.

Personally, I believe that when we leave this existance for the next, we will all be in for a huge surprise.

IMHO, religion is nothing more than man's interpretation of "GOD'S Word".

How do you, I or anyone else know for a fact that when we crack open the Bible or Torah, or even the Koran, if somehow, somewhere in time, someone may have added, deleted or altogether change the word.

The basic message throughout the ages can not be changed by mere mortals, and that is Love, honor, respect, and cherish those around you as you would want to be treated as well.

No offense, but LGF is not a pulpit to preach.

Not everyone here is Christian (there are quite a few Jews here and some agnostic and atheists as well) and most desire not to debate the issue. I'll leave it at that :)

You just make it up as you go along. You started this whole thing by assuming you could tell me what I post about on a blog.

As to your inquiry

How do you, I or anyone else know for a fact that when we crack open the Bible or Torah, or even the Koran, if somehow, somewhere in time, someone may have added, deleted or altogether change the word./blockquote>
Best that I can hint to you (would no want to tell you anything)is that if you have to get God's daily word for you from a book that you did not write, or a church that is not your heart you are being shortchanged, bambozelled and lied to.

God is here with us and waiting to hear from you. For he gave His only begotten Son that we might not only have everlasting live, but more important to Jesus that we might have a comforter in times of need or peril.

If this promise of hope offends you, fear not for God is with you through Jesus who died on the Cross for all of us that we might have peace on earth and everlasting live in God the Father. For whenever we call to our Creator He will make sure we are heard. This the Lamb of God has promised to each and everyone of us.

Merry CHRISTMAS to you also.

Releasing a mass-murdering member of a terrorist organization right back into the arms of that organization because your government is being held hostage by proxy is helplessness.

This guy got a life sentence and he served 20 years. This happens all the time, expecially in the U.S. Otherwise, the prisons would be even more crowded than they are today.

Typical crap. First start out with a "mostly true" statement. . .

This guy got a life sentence

Actually he got life without the possibility of parole

Then say that your opponent is just as bad or worse than you are, based on a faulty understanding of the actual facts . . .

This happens all the time, expecially (sp) in the U.S.

Actually, nearly every state in the U.S. has passed "truth in sentencing" laws, and "life without the possibility of parole" does NOT result in parole reviews or any possibility of release, but I guess we couldn't expect that you rely on actual "Facts"

Then, follow up with a red-herring argument about why this isn't as bad as it seems . . .

Otherwise, the prisons would be even more crowded than they are today.

If the problem to be corrected is crowded prisons, there are several fairly simple solutions. Don't impose prison sentences for crimes. Build more prisons. Expand the use of the death penalty. Trade all prisoners for money/hostages/courtside tickets, etc.

Nice argument TH, very persuasive. /sarc

Sadly, this is nothing new from our Euorpean allies.

I think we need another term for 'European allies', because they certainly are NOT allies in any sense of the word...

Delata Force was the last movie Lee Marvin ever appered in. For comic relief in that film was Lainie Kazan, Joey Bishop, Shelly Winters and George Kennedy (as a priest). Robert Forster played the main Hiabullah villain.

Chuck Norris made a lot of good action flciks in the mid 1980's. He has said that he loved to film in Israel.

What you have missed is that Germany was supposed to inform the US, and extradite this guy for a court appearance in the USA.

There is a treaty, signed by Germany, that agrees to that sort of exchange.

You miss the part of the story that explains why Germany would fail to follow through in this case. Quite possibly this is for an exchange of a hostage. If so, then no German citizen is safe in most middle east countries.

What you don't understand is that the United States has been dismantling the Terrorists, brick by brick.

Quite Frankly, I don't see why your opinion of our low taxes and growing economy has to do with the War on Terror, so we'll skip that part, as well as the part about actually executing evil people who commit multiple murders.

Where are you from? England? Maybe you should petition for England to stop helping us in Iraq and Afghanistan.

France? Maybe you should ask your leaders why they were involved in an illegal deal with Iraq, exchanging weapons for oil.

Germany? Well.. if you are from Germany, you just need to be quiet. You haven't outlived the survivors of the holocaust quite yet.

The one negative about that is all those Northeasterners who voted liberal and are fleeing the consequences of the failed liberal policies (of NY, Mass. Fatal,
Not only did the Germans violate this scumbags sentence (life without parole), not only did they negotiate with terrorists, not only did they exchange one terrorists for an "Islamic convert", they violated their word and treaty with the U.S. regarding international extradition.

Not to defend this release, but there is no such thing as life without parole in German law. Non-extradition also happened because the death penalty is against the German constitution, that also goes for cases were the country the convict is extradited to will execute him.

Like I said, I don't defend this at all, though. Even if his parole hearing was back in June, even the appearence that our government gave in is shameful and will have bad consequences as far as further abductions are concerned.

The sympathy felt for New York on 9/11 was misplaced. The sympathy belonged to the families of the victims. The attack was not on New York but on America. Many New Yorkers show as much gratitude as the French, British, Belgians and Germans show.

I thought of this one:

We know now that as human beings busy themselves about their various concerns, they were scrutinized and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as man with a microscope might scrutinize the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water.

With infinite complacence people went to and fro over the earth about their little affairs, serene in the assurance over their dominion over this small, spinning fragment of solar driftwood. Which by chance or design, Man has inherited out of the dark mystery of time and space. Yet across an immense ethereal gulf, minds that are to our minds, as ours are to the beasts in the jungle. Intellects vast, cool and unsympathetic, regarded this Earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us.

people like TH think of themselves as the "Intellects"

then I remembered what happened to the Martians in the book... then I feel better... and I feel pity for Eurpoe.

The U.S. owes it to its citizens and the family and loved ones of Robert Dean Stethem to hunt down and kill not only Mohammed Ali Hamadi but everyone on the Hizballah side involved in negotiating or facilitating his release. As for Germany, I think a significant and public economic sanction would suffice. John Bolton should announce it on the floor of the UN.

Yes, let's bury the hatchet in OUR enemies!

And further, let us boycott the Steven Speilberg's that want to come along and make the execution of justice a morally neutral movie...Traitor to his ancestory!

LBJ was being sarcastic.
Also the French Defens Minister (what an oxymoron that title is) said at the time that French nuclear weapons will be pointed in all directions (implying that some would be pointed at the United States) to show French national defense independence. Dean Rusk or Robert McNamara said to the French Amabssador should the United States take that into consideration when we start aiming our missiles (at France as well as at the USSR)? The French Ambassador clammed up.

Lets see...Germany attempted world domination twice in one century and is 0/2.

Germany has been "training" Afghani police forces in order to "contribute" to the WOT. They have trained less than 200 policemen since the program began in mid 2002.

The EU could not ratify a constitution, but Iraq and Afghanistan did...in the middle of a war.

The German unemployment rate is ~ 10.4%.
The French unemployment rate is ~ 9.3%
The US unemployment rate is 5.0%

French "peace keepers" in the Congo have raped and produced porn films of their victims...along with murdering a few along the way, all while "peace keeping" under the banner of the UN (speaking of the UN, remember Rwanda?).

The German unemployment rate will tick up a few more notches when the US pulls the 2 remaining armored divisions out of that God-forsaken hole around 2009.

Three separate bi-partisan commissions have concluded that the President did NOT lie, fabricate, or otherwise missuse intelligence leading to the war in Iraq...intelligence that Germany, the UK, France, Italy, Spain, etc. all pointed to Saddam having WMD.

None of this will reverberate with the 6 or so brain cells linking your ears. So, when the mullahs inform you that pubs are banned (serve alcohol), homosexuals will be executed (you guys tried this once), women must be veiled, no more bacon, etc., I PRAY we don't spend a dime or drop of American blood in saving your mangey rears for the THIRD time!

Who did Sword of Gideon?

Speilberg did very will with Schindler's List, but more than one review says he made a movie that treats the Israeli team and the terrorists on equal footing, all about the angst incured by the commando team as they kill these scum one by one. Here is one review from New Republic.

Review

I will see the movie myself, but am wary of a Hollywood that 3 years after 9/11 won't put out a clear movie depicting Islamo-facists as the threat to Western Civilization that they are. Such movies like Sum of All Fears. The terrorists are transformed by Hollywood into neo Nazis, while Clancy had them as Islamo-Facists in his book.

Or we have Jarhead, which is all about the angst of some discontented Marine. Or that T.V. series "Over There," some sort of Military Peyton Place...never, EVER about the fact that our military is liberating millions of people.

No such thing as a bright line of right and wrong for Hollywood. Everything is as confused to them as their own lack of morals or sense of right and wrong.

Captain Testrake was always an Israel basher though he behaved with a certain amount of dignity while the crisis was in progress- unlike that Jew-hating pig Caspar Weinberger who was leaking anti-Israel comments everywhere in the media. MF's.
And let's not overlook the MTA's role in all this; under the contract or the law, this is an illegal strike and I think the workers SHOULD get docked two days pay for every day they're on this illegal strike, but you know the MTA won't do that or they'll be another strike. For crying out loud isn't there a NY Politician of Power around with enough guts to tell these transit workers "Enough MF'ers" (well, ok, maybe just "Enough" - these mf's can retire at 55 on like 60% of base pay for last 5 years AND keep health insurance.

And all the folks who work as doorman, porters, janitors and mechanics in high rise office and apartment buildings who of course can't afford to live in Manhattan - THEIR contract dock's 'em a days pay for every day they don't show up unless under doctors orders to stay home.
And the LAST STRAW was the time of year they picked to go on strike; when this strikes over I'm going to be giving the finger to every transit worker I see and if they don't like it, we can settle it ourselves, ya know.

I always shuddered when I saw a MetCouncil vehicle when I lived in the western suburbs.

I still think they should be brought up on criminal charges for what they did to the poor people in minneapolis.

some of the MetCouncil people owned land in Minneapolis that became a bit of a craphole of poverty.

so they told the people that they had to move to the suburbs of St. Louis Park, Hopkins, Minnetonka, etc, and the buildings were torn down and rebuilt as expensive apartments.

the landowners (on the MetCouncil) got a tax break for the redevelopment, and the MetCouncil agreed to have those short busses for these people they forcibly moved.

So they forcibly moved poor people, so they could get more money, got a break from the state on it, and got the council that THEY'RE ON to make the transportation issues go away.

Not a hint of it was ever in the news.

Wow, reading that was like watching it all over again on tv. That particular event just haunts me. I remember feeling so sorry for the man, singled out and slaughtered. This was before I really had a clue about the real threat we are now facing. Back then, it was still the usual hijacking for the return of political prisoners or seeking asylum in Cuba.

Hollywood will never make a film that shows Muslims in a negative light. Don't you know that the enemy is really big corporations (The Manchurian Candidate or The Day After Tomorrow, Syriana), fundamentalist Christians, anti Communists (Goodnight and Good Luck), Israelis ("Private") and the people who decide to fight back (War of the Worlds and "Munich")?

You're right of course, I actually think if the Moslems bombed a studio, raped the wives and daughers of several producers and directors, the movie they put out would end up blaming America for making the Muslims all angry. The movie would probably open with an old Billy Graham crusade that told people that Christ is the only way to Salvation...and that is what produced the Islamic rage. Never mind any history on the pedophile, Jew/Christian murdering founder.

Yes, I remember those nicknames given to NBC and ABC. They were well-deserved. Did you ever see a documentary made by Americans for a Safe Israel in 1983 or 1984 about NBC's coverage of Israel's war in Lebanon? It was the first the time anyone documented the slanted TV coverage of Israel as a TV documentary. Of course, there had been books and magazine coverage of the anti-Israel coverage and especially the coverage of Flight 847. Commentary Magazine had some good articles back then about that covergae.

Another interesting Hollywood person is Steven Segal. He is supposedly an X-CIA black ops type. Yet many of his movies are anti-CIA, and very anti-Corporations.

To Hollywood, corporations are inheirently evil, newspaper reporters are inheirently good, and government is good, if the President is a Democrat. Also most men are stupid and posioned by testosterone. Any woman can bring down any man by a kick to the nuts. All men will sucumb to a big ass and long lashes, children are wise, military men are lunatics or 2 seconds away from a coup attempt.

Lawyers are always good, unless they are prosecutors, or defending a big corporation that mostly exists to pollute or rape the environment. Can't wait for the Hollywood movie about an x-General that starts a corporation that makes billions, who's only product is pollution.

And the General is plotting to overthrow the gov of the U.S. Once in control he will execute all homosexuals, fire all women and take their shoes and imprison them in kitchens. Most women will undergoe forced impregnation without the possibility of abortions.

We will be rescued by compassionate Muslims, finaced by a secret cabal of apostate, anti zionist NYC Jews, lead by an intrepid girl reporter from the NYT.

The move will end when intrepid girl reporter confronts the General who will take ten minutes to boast of his genius plot, his boasting and plot will end when intrepid girl reproter kicks him in the nuts.

The General will, of course, be a fat albino, right-wing fundamentalist Christian, who has posters of Hitler in his bedroom.

"On Deadly Ground." I did though love in 1990 "Out for Justice" which was filmed in Bensonhurst Brooklyn (one neighborhood over from mine at the time).

I liked that film also. He went off the rails, I think with that film about the oil company in Alaska. That Out for Justice really caught the flavor of Brooklyn, I been out to Brighton Beach and Coney Island a few times.

I like the end with that evil guy, and he says "I like pain," Seagal gave it to him. Akido looks interesting. I did Tae Kwan Do for a while.

Actually don't have the time for the Eastern stuff, would like to learn Krav Maga, just because the world is getting more dangerous, and you don't have to spend forever to get leathal.

In "Out for Justice" he says to the villain "You're out of bullets, too bad 'cause that could have saved you a lot of pain" or soemthing to that effect. Also Jerry Orbach (pre Lenny Briscoe from Law & Order) played a Detective in the film. I loved the authentic feel of the Brooklyn streets.

You call folks a lot of names but offer no argument (I know, you can't be bothered). I have been re-reading The Blank Slate by Stephen Pinker. In it he describes the ideological connections between Communism and National Socialism that allowed them to commit atrocities that killed millions. IMO, the points apply equally to Islam. To Quote:

"... the belief that history is a preordained succession of conflicts between groups of people and that improvement in the human condition can only come from the victory of one group over the others. For the Nazis the groups were races; for the Marxists they were classes [for the Muslims - religions:a_g]
...The ideologies, once implemented, led to atrocities in a few steps: struggle (often a euphemism for violence) [jihad: a_g] is inevitable and beneficial; certain groups of people (the non-Aryans and bourgeoisie) [kaffirs: a_g] are morally inferior; improvements in human welfare depend on their subjugation or elimination.

What do you think?

During World War 2, the father of activist media, Dr. Goebbels, speculated that T.E. Lawrence (who had been killed in a motorcycle accident in 1935) might still be alive and leading the homosexual wing of the World Jewish Conspiracy in its secret war against the Third Reich. Something to that effect anyway. It must warm the cockles of Goebbels' heart to see the present-day Islamic and fifth column media, with their devotion to conspiracy theories, big lies, and strawmen. He probably prefers not to get any warmer anywhere, however.

.22 pistol. Don't know how accurate I am at any distance, but at 20 feet all my rounds were darn close to center.

America wants a special, written exception from the International Criminal Court, but the Swiss say no:

"So far only Israel and Romania have signed. Yesterday Switzerland said it would not sign, the first nation to formally reject an agreement. The Swiss foreign minister, Joseph Deiss, said his country refused to sign because "too extensive a use of exceptions may weaken the ability of the court to function effectively."

Thats the spirit! I'm proud of my country. We're not just a bunch of dirt-poor indymedia-types babbling about transnational justice and all that crap. So we know what we're talking about. "Is my way or the highway" says Bush. Well, the Swiss are walking their own walk and feel pretty good about it.

Here:

here in Switzerland, we eat pompous hickies like You for breakfast and shit them out before teatime. Next time You make a comment, compare Your country with mine, man for man, dollar for dollar and plane for plane: We beat You hands down anytime, anywhere, in just about any field imaginable.

And here:

I knew it: there HAD to be some freaking 'tardbot digging up the second world war to smear the Swiss, who saved more Jews from extinction than any other european country. Sure we weren't morally squeaky-clean when we turned down some at the border, but at least we deal ojectively with our more shadowy past, which can't be said for the Americans. But I wont go into a debate about the extermination of american-indians, since anything historic just gets distorted by the very same clueless fuckbags who sigh with pleasure when Bushies PR-people blow hickory-flavored smoke up their behind.

Tardbots? Fuckbags? Pompous hickies?

If you are indeed Swiss, you certainly have a long history but it's not one that you can always be proud off.

Neutrality is a wonderful perch from which to criticize others who are doing the heavy lifting of the world. It must be nice to sit back and kibitz while others have to fight just to live.

Personally, for whatever faults the US has I am proud that we have done far more good for the world than any other nation.

Don't think so? Ask your older European neighbors if they preferred us or the Nazis and the Soviets. Ask the S. Koreans if they rather live under the Japanese or like their relatives to the north. Ask the Vietnamese if life under Uncle Ho and his successors was so wonderful.

This is UK tv channel ITV's idea of seasonal entertainment:

Actress Martine McCutcheon has landed a role in the new television drama 'The English Harem'.

She is set to play the part of a supermarket checkout girl who falls in love with a Muslim restaurant owner and agrees to marry him, despite the fact that he already has two wives.

Her character will have to try to overcome opposition from her parents and her racist ex-boyfriend.

'The English Harem', which will also star 'Holby City' actor Art Malik, is based on a novel by Anthony McCarten.

Malik said: "The difference in background and age between the two central characters makes it original and enticing."

Nick Elliot, ITV drama controller, said: "The English Harem is a charming and highly original film. It is timely in that it explores the Muslim community."

What's the betting the muslim characters are all charming, funny, lovable and big-hearted, while the English (apart from the heroine) are all eevviiil racists? Don't expect honor killings to be part of the plot
(as it might have been if the heroine was a nice muslim girl who falls in love with the Christian owner of a burger bar...)

Ok, back on topic
Querdenker, a poster on medienkritik has given me permission to quote him.
---
The confusion stems from the fact that Hamadi did not get "regular life" (lebenslänglich), which makes you eligible for parole after 15 years), but he got life "unter Feststellung der besonderen Schwere der Schuld". This means that you are not eligible for parole after 15 years but doesn't exclude that you may be after that. The German terrorists convicted in the late 70s and early 80s did walk free after 20 years or so. That's quite a typical timeframe. Very few Germans have served longer than that. You may find this too lenient but that's how it works here.

The decision to free Hamadi is made by the independent Hessian judiciary. The German government cannot order it. The parole process cannot be completed in such a short time anyway so the proceedings definitely started before Osthof was kidnapped. Any connections you might want to make are purely speculations.

The Hessian judiciary says that they had no pending US extradition request for Hamadi. Had there been one, they would have been bound by law to consider it (grant or deny). Of course such a request, if it existed, could only be granted if the US were to try Hamadi for a crime he wasn't convicted for in Germany.

---

But Niko, another poster on the same thread (with whom I've been fondly acquainted for some years) clarifies:
---
Pamela, I'd rather not link to Querdenker's comment, because it is partly wrong.

1. "The decision to free Hamadi is made by the independent Hessian judiciary." - wrong. For the last 8 years Hamadi was not imprisoned in Hesse but in North Rhine-Westphalia, and the decision to release Hamadi was made by the Landgericht Kleve, which is in North Rhine-Westphalia.

2. "The Hessian judiciary says that they had no pending US extradition request for Hamadi." - actually, such high-profile cases are always handled by the Generalbundesanwaltschaft (comparable to the Attorney General's office). It was not the Hessian judiciary but the federal that had to check whether there was an extradition request for Hamadi, so in actual fact the case was handled by Merkel's cabinet.

3. "Of course such a request, if it existed, could only be granted if the US were to try Hamadi for a crime he wasn't convicted for in Germany." - wrong. The only provisio that might impede an extradition is if Hamadi were to face execution in the US.

---

Have at it.

Looking at my PPV AccuWeather snowfall maps, Algeria and Morocco due for snow late next week, the week after that we get snow as close to Israel as Syria and Lebanon, but not in Israel. Sure we weren't morally squeaky-clean when we turned down some at the border, but at least we deal ojectively with our more shadowy past, which can't be said for the Americans. But I wont go into a debate about the extermination of american-indians

Turned away some at the border? Ha! Lesse.

The Swiss and the Nazi Gold
---
In this seven-page "declaration of the Swiss Federal Council" the Council asserts that the conclusions of the Eizenstat report are "unsupported," its assessments are "one sided," and that it goes beyond history and into "political and moral values" concerning transactions between Switzerland and Nazi Germany.

The Council also rejected the charge that "the neutral countries may have prolonged the Third Reich's ability to wage war by trading with it" and says there is no support for this charge. While acknowleging some mistakes were made - such as Switzerland's wartime refugee policy and, "questonable deals" between Swiss businesses and the Nazis - the Swiss Federal Council's statement says any balanced review would vindicate Swiss behavior during the war because it was the only way to guarantee its survival: "neutrality led to a difficult tightrope walk between adaptation and resistance."
---

Yah, that difficult tightrope. The tight rope was around the Jews' necks.

The Swiss closed the borders in 1942.

Aimee Stitelmann, 79, was imprisoned for 15 days almost 60 years ago for breaking Swiss immigration laws after the country closed its borders in 1942.
She is the first person to benefit from a law introduced this year which offers pardons to those punished for helping Jews get into Switzerland.

After her imprisonment, the Swiss authorities regarded her as a convicted criminal, and for four decades they monitored her activities, even her phone calls.

Four decades? Into the 1980's? Some shadowy history there THS.

via medienkritik, State Dept breifing on Hamadi release

In the years since his arrest and conviction, the United States has made its views known that Hammadi should face trial in the U.S. for the murder of Mr. Stethem and that we have demonstrated over the years that when an individual -- we believe an individual is responsible for the murder of innocent American civilians that we will track them down and that we will bring them to justice in the United States. We saw that -- we have seen that over the years. We saw that with the person responsible for the murder of an American citizen, Mr. Klinghoffer. We tracked that person down and we brought them to justice in the United States. It doesn't matter how long it takes, but we will track them down and they will face justice in the United States.

BTW, medienkritik won the best euro blog award. If you haven't given them some traffic, it's your loss.

Back in the days when almost all meetings were conducted in meatspace, my boss and I would go nuts at people yammering and yammering blah blah blah.

So, one day I took my 100% authentic Mickey Mouse hat with me and when I'd had enough, I put it on and just sat there.

It proved a fail-proof technique and got me promoted into management.

SUBHUMAN go here and see the truth about your Peace loving countrymen

In the immediate aftermath of the war, over a quarter of a million Jewish survivors languished penniless in Displaced Persons Camps for months or even years. The Swiss government stonewalled specific requests regarding bank accounts and blocked all attempts to the use the huge amount of "heirless assets" for refugee aid.

To this day, the banks have refused all but a handful of claimants. This is the starting point for both narratives. However the authors are compelled to approach a more fundamental issue--the role of the Swiss government in contributing to the Nazi's success in the first place, as well as that of the American, British, and a number of "neutral" governments.

Our very own Henry Dunant founded the Red Cross to take care of that.

Take care of what, dear? Making sure the Jooos can't use the Magen David on their ambulances?

I was thinking about that Joyce quote earlier today. You know, Switzerland was very convenient for a British Empire expat who wanted to get out of the way of a couple of world wars. Thing is, as soon as the Great War was over he went scurrying back to dirty old Paris, where you wouldn't even eat a loaf of bread off the street, much less soup. If he hadn't died of peritonitis, he'd surely have done the same after WWII.

There's another famous quote about Switzerland.

"In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed - but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, five hundred years of democracy and what did that produce - the cuckoo clock!"

if you come up with the death squads in central america and the murder of several million american indians.

Are you saying that pure-as-driven-snow-Switzerland is historically comparable to author-of-all-evil-America?!

But let's see now:

1) "death squads in central america"... I'll take that as "US support for the fight against communism in Central America [initial capitals there, by the way], which was successful, and *improved* human rights records of the Central American militaries who had US Special Forces and/or School for the Americas training, versus haughty Swiss 'neutrality' about the entire struggle"... okay, yep, I'll take that one.

2) "murder of several million american indians"... hmm, actually the great majority of the Indians you're referring to died of disease, and we're talking hundreds of years ago, versus Swiss profiteering from fascism and genocide during the time your parents were alive... yep, okay, I'll take that one, too.

Your ancestors probably made a nice profit dealing with the infected blankets

So, let me get this straight. The infected blankets incident happened over 300 years ago. Lord Archer (I think) - British military - is blamed for doing it intentionally.

So Lord Archer is ancestor to all Americans? Or is it the British military? An incident that occurred before the U.S. existed, perpetrated by an officer of the gov't we freed ourselves from, is used to smear current-day Americans?

Ok. Hie thee to Berlin. Walk down any street and accost a German born after 1945. Blame that person for the Holocaust because maybe some of that person's 'ancestors' were guilty.

See, the thing is, you're so dishonest, both in your facts and your logic that it amounts to a pathology.

I probably shouldn't get such enjoyment out of making fun of you. But it is hilarious when you maintain that your country saved more Jews than anyone else, and then remain silent when shown the evidence to the contrary. Not just evidence to the contrary, but evidence that you prosecuted people who did help Jews and persecuted them for almost half a century.

There's probably a word - hold on - yep - got it.

Coward.

Your entertainment value to me is no longer worth much.

General Amherst did consider sending small pox infected blankets to the Indians (during Pontiac's War in 1763) but there is no indication that he actuallly did so. "MR. MCCORMACK: She -- the Secretary was aware of this case. She was briefed on it. We were engaging the German Government at a variety of levels. I don't believe that she intervened in this particular matter."

Condi Rice knew before this murderer was released that he was about to be released. Instead of demanding that he be turned over to the US to face trail, Rice did nothing. Now State is playing the game that they really want this guy. Yeah right. If they really wanted this guy, then why didn't Rice get on the damn telephone and demand he be sent here? The worst that would have happen is the Germans would have said no. So instead, we pretend like we going to get this guy from a country which harboured the terrorists group he's part of and from a country which we have no extradition treaty with.

As for the standard PC line about the Indians, one could take a cue from "Pangs," a great episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer:

Spike: Oh, someone put a stake in me.

Xander: You got a lot of volunteers in here.

Spike: I just can't take all this mamby-pamby boo-hooing about the bloody Indians.

Buffy: Uh, the preferred term...

Spike: You won. All right? You came in and you killed them and you took their land. That's what conquering nations do. It's what Caesar did, and he's not going around saying, "I came, I conquered, I felt really bad about it." The history of the world isn't people making friends. You had better weapons, and you massacred them. End of story.

My family, like most families, came later. Not that I believe in family punishment like Kim Jong Il. MODERN Europeans could be forgiven for the Holocaust, if they weren't rushing towards another one.

You can lead them to facts, rub their noses in facts, but you can't make them think.

I concede, smallpox blankets are A VERY BAD THING. I'd be more likely to gamble in an Indian casino myself. I'll drop $40.00 in the slots before quitting, which more than covers any actual guilt I share for smallpox blankets.

564 maddog44  Tue, Dec 20, 2005 3:57:45pm

The worst that would have happen is the Germans would have said no.

I think the German Gov't definitely would have said no. That coalition gov't Merkel's got going is as fragile as they come. The only way it could have appeared coherent and independent would have been to say no. why put them in the position of having to explicity and publically piss on the U.S.? Especially after all this 'secret rendition' crap? And why use Condi's prestige and credibility for a no-win?

I'm hoping there will be something more subtle in the future that the Germans will have to suffer in silence - and suffer terribly.

BTW, for those suggesting we move the remaining bases - a Congressman I was discussing this with told me we fully expect the Germans to try to recover some of the lost revenue by suing us for environmental damage on the bases.

566 maddog44  Tue, Dec 20, 2005 4:00:30pm

567 Beagle  Tue, Dec 20, 2005 4:01:10pm

Amherst places the blame squarely where it belongs in reality, on the Spaniards (half kidding only). The real massacres of Indians, as much due to disease as warfare, happened under the Spaniards.

These are the pivotal letters:
Colonel Henry Bouquet to General Amherst, dated 13 July 1763, suggests in a postscript the distribution of blankets to "inocculate the Indians";
Amherst to Bouquet, dated 16 July 1763, approves this plan in a postscript and suggests as well as "to try Every other method that can serve to Extirpate this Execrable Race." (This postcript spans two pages.)
These letters also discuss the use of dogs to hunt the Indians, the so-called "Spaniard's Method," which Amherst approves in principle, but says he cannot implement because there are not enough dogs. In a letter dated 26 July 1763, Bouquet acknowledges Amherst's approval and writes, "all your Directions will be observed."

Like war, you can't study history without running into dogs. Unlike war, dogs aren't good for remembering historical timelines.

Speaking of smallpox, there was a massive epidemic that swept North America from 1775 to 1782. English and Hessian soldiers has some immunity but the white colonists, African slaves and Native Americans did not. The epidemic had a profound impact on the course of the American Revolution. Here's the book.

# 565 "why put them in the position of having to explicity and publically piss on the U.S.? Especially after all this 'secret rendition' crap? And why use Condi's prestige and credibility for a no-win?"

I think you answered your own question. To put them in the position of having to piss on the US for a simple extradition request. If the Germans piss on a request to extradite the murderer of an American serviceman, then they should pay the price of having everyone know about it.
As for Condi's prestige, I happen not to give one iota. Her prestige comes from the fact of her office, period. I think most Americans would agree that if she can't use her office and whatever prestige it may bring to demand the extradition of the cold blooded killer of an American Serviceman killed for no other purpose than the fact that he wore the uniform of US Soldier then she should find another job.

Very late post... but still wondering about that old T.H. Suburbia post:

compare Your country with mine [Switzerland], man for man, dollar for dollar and plane for plane

Now, "man for man", I'm not sure what that means... their men are better than ours, in an ubermenschen/untermenschen sort of way? Careful there, T.H. Or is he referring to military prowess? In which case, I'm wondering how he can make that assertion, given Switzerland's lack of modern military experience.

"Dollar for dollar"... that would be comparing the US dollar to the, ah, Swiss dollar? Hm. Sort of a zen koan thing, I guess. Or is it GDP? That would be US, US$11.75 trillion total, US$40,100 per capita; Switzerland, US$252 billion total, US$$33,800 per capita. (Source:
CIA World FactBook) Nope, no Swiss bragging rights there.

"Plane for plane"... I've been searching around the web to find some Swiss-maufactured aircraft to use as comparators, and that's funny, I can't seem to find any. Surely a nation as smart as the Swiss must make some kick-ass airplanes? Maybe if I go to the Swiss Air Force home page, that'll help. Hmm... it appears that the most modern combat aircraft in their inventory is... the F/A-18 Hornet. Which is made by us stump-toothed, Bible-thumping redneck morons! Hey, T.H., if you're still around, do you mind explaining this?

Very lame fisking, I say. I grant you this: When it comes to "survival of the fattest", you make the top of almost every list. Better start reading up on that intelligent-design thingy. You'll need it. But if you look at other per-capita statistics, for example at CIA or Nationmaster.com, and check a few numbers, you get a slightly different picture.

Here's just a taste:

Life expectancy:
CH: 79,99 years
US: 77,14 years

Incarceration rate:
CH: 72 per 100'000
US: 715 per 100'000

Murders:
CH: 0,009 per 1000
US: 0,04 per 1000

Patents granted:
CH: 24,4 per Million
US: 0,97 per Million

Nobel Laureates:
CH: 2,9 per Million
US: 0,9 per Million

Olympic Medals (Sidney):
CH: 1,24 per Million
US: 0,35 per Million

Carbon -efficiency:
CH: 0.61 CO2 emissions/$ GDP
US: 1.77 CO2 emissions/$ GDP

Even your own statitics prove Occasional Reader's point.

With the exception of Life Expectancy, Patents, Nobel Prizes and Olympic Medals, the USA scores higher on every other parameter.

USA! USA! USA!
