Friends of Hamas in Madison, WI
At Madison Wisconsin’s Capital Times we find open support of Hamas from three recognizable types. (Hat tip: artw.)
The blatant liar:
But Mohammed Abed, a graduate student and lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said it is untrue that Hamas has refused to negotiate with Israel or recognize the Jewish state.
“The leadership of Hamas has been willing to go for a negotiated settlement, at least one that will end hostilities, for 20 or 30 years,” said Abed, who is a member of Students for Alternative Palestinian Agenda.
He also disputed the notion that Hamas derives its power from violence. “The support is there because Hamas is not corruptible and it’s actually run on a platform of reform,” Abed said.
The useful idiot:
“Hamas provided a lot of social aid and medical aid that the other political parties never did,” said Amy Scarr, a member of a Madison group that provides humanitarian aid to Rafah, a Palestinian city in the Gaza Strip.
And the naïve ostrich:
“They seem to be the true idealists in their society,” agreed Moshe Yurhman, an Israeli who has lived in the United States for about 25 years. “I don’t think the election results reflect a decision by Palestinian voters to become more militant toward Israelis.”
