On Tuesday, the same day Iran announced they had succeeded in enriching uranium, they were elected as deputy to Asian nations for the UN Commission on Disarmament. (Hat tip: Gateway Pundit.)

Their first act was to call for existing nuclear states to demolish their arms. And of course, they singled out Israel:

Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member states have pushed for the agenda of disarmament and Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in the current annual meeting.

NAM member states issued a statement on the first day of the annual meeting calling on nuclear states to respect their commitments of demolishing their nuclear arms.

They also called on Israel to sign up to NPT and give access to all its nuclear sites for monitoring by UN nuclear agency.

And today, Iranian madman Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the existence of Israel is a threat to the Islamic world.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran’s president said on Friday that the existence of the “Zionist regime”, Iran’s term for Israel, was a threat to the Islamic world, days after declaring Iran had become a nuclear power by enriching uranium.

“The existence of the Zionist regime is tantamount to an imposition of an unending and unrestrained threat so that none of the nations and Islamic countries of the region and beyond can feel secure from its threat,” Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told a conference on the Palestinian cause.

UPDATE at 4/14/06 9:13:45 am:

But of course, CNN is always eager to look on the bright side. (Hat tip: Joel.)

But the tone of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s speech to a conference on the Palestinian issue was slightly more moderate than fiery rhetoric last year, when Iran’s official IRNA news agency quoted him as telling a conference: “Israel must be wiped off the map.”
