RetweetEU Finds No Evidence of Illegal CIA Action

Fri, Apr 21, 2006 at 2:08:47 pm PDT

Remember those secret renditions of terror suspects and secret CIA prisons that concerned the European Union so much that they launched investigations?

Well, they apparently don’t exist. EU official: No evidence of illegal CIA action. (Hat tip: efuseakay.)

BRUSSELS — Investigations into reports that US agents shipped prisoners through European airports to secret detention centers have produced no evidence of illegal CIA activities, the European Union’s antiterrorism coordinator said yesterday.

The investigations also have not turned up any proof of secret renditions of terror suspects on EU territory, Gijs de Vries told a European Parliament committee investigating the allegations.

The European Parliament’s probe and a similar one by the continent’s leading human rights watchdog are looking into whether US intelligence agents interrogated Al Qaeda suspects at secret prisons in Eastern Europe and transported some on secret flights through Europe.

But so far investigators have not identified any human rights violations, despite more than 50 hours of testimony by human rights activists and individuals who said they were abducted by US intelligence agents, de Vries said.

Even though the CIA is a leaky seive that cannot keep a single secret, EVERYONE KNOWS that the CIA is expert at keeping secret their illegal prisons, and their collusion with the Mossad in making 9/11 happen.

Along with the Masons.

Looks like the moonbats are 0-for-15 when it comes to concocted scandals intended to get Bush impeached.

Let's see if we can list them:

Plamegate
CIA secret European prisons
Gunatanamo abuse
Abu Ghraid photos
Katrina federal rescue efforts
Intelligence leaks
Abramoff scandal
9/11 was an inside job
...

C'mon -- help me complete the list of failed scandal-mongering!

Oh yeah. And check this out

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - A British former envoy to Uzbekistan has revealed that western secret services obtained intelligence secured under torture from foreign detainees, with MEPs criticising the EU anti-terror coordinator for spinelessness.

Speaking before the European Parliament's temporary committee on CIA activities in Europe on Thursday (20 April), Craig Murray said that UK intelligence had obtained information from detainees tortured by Uzbek security forces.

He alerted British foreign minister, Jack Straw, of the methods used by Uzbek intelligence as far back as 2003.

"There is a plenty of evidence about torture carried out in Uzbekistan and I know that foreign minister Jack Straw officially approved using the information obtained through torture," Mr Murray said, citing a secret report from a meeting held on 3 March 2003.
The German secret service was also cooperating very closely with its Uzbek counterpart, he added, while Britain and the US had taken a policy decision to obtain intelligence under torture in other countries as well.

"I say this with great pain but with absolute certainty," the ex-ambassador stated.

EU's anti-terror czar unpopular
The EU's anti-terror coordinator, Gijs de Vries, also made an appearance before the committee on Thursday.

He said there is still no irrefutable evidence of EU government involvement in or knowledge of illegal CIA activities in or close to the EU, despite a steady stream of reports to the contrary from highly-respected NGOs and journalists.

His stance provoked frustration among members, with Spanish socialist MEP Maria Elena Valenciano Martinez-Orozco pressing Mr de Vries for more information.

"There are strong and many indications that extraordinary renditions have taken place," she said. "What is worse? That member states did not know or that they knew and did not tell?"

Mr de Vries also denied knowledge of any EU-US agreement to allow so-called extraordinary renditions - the alleged US practice of snatching terror suspects in Europe and flying them to secret CIA camps.

Mr de Vries said he could only remind EU member states as well as third countries - like the US - to respect international laws on human rights, while underlining the EU's lack of legal powers in this sphere.

EU institutions do not have the authority to demand intelligence about member state activities in the security, government or judicial areas.

The anti-terror coordinator failed to refer to any of the statements made voluntarily by member states on the subject.

His appearance before the committee was deemed "completely useless" by Italian socialist MEP Claudio Fava, while German liberal Alexander Nuno Alvaro ironically asked Mr de Vries to state his job description.

The parliament's committee is expected to unveil its findings in June.

Actually, I bet they did find evidence of rendition, it's just that they also found out several terrorist attacks in the EU were prevented in the process and recognized a good thing when they saw it.

Maybe.

8 stuiec  Fri, Apr 21, 2006 12:14:10pm

The real human rights violation is how the CIA behaved in a way that made the human rights activists suspicious that it was violating someone's human rights, thus causing them anxiety and distress in violation of their human rights... is that nonsensical enough for the situation?

I was just reading from a variety of sources about the CIA firing an employee after an investigation of leaks to the media of classified information involving the alleged CIA secret prisons in Europe. None of the stories are giving the employee's name because that would be illegal, BUT (this was taken from the story in the Baltimore Sun)

A second law enforcement official confirmed there was a criminal investigation under way and said the CIA officer had provided information that contributed to a Washington Post story last year saying there were secret U.S. prisons in Eastern Europe.

Both of those officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Ironic huh. Anonomous CIA officials leaking information to the media about an investigation into CIA leaks.

OT: There will be a rally in front of the UN on Monday, April 24th from 12-2:00 p.m. to protest the violence against Copts and other Christians.

There will also be a rally in Los Angeles at the same time and on the same day. Details here:

[Link: www.earnedmedia.org...]

A movement seems to be starting. It has taken as it's symbol the Crescent and the Cross, an old 1918 revolution symbol from Egypt at another time when the average person on the street, Muslim and Copt, joined hands and changed things. The new movement against sectarian violence is using this symbol. My only concern is I'd like to know more about who's behind the little stickers that were passed out in Egypt on the weekend at the anti-Muslim on Christian violence rally. I just hope it's not another hard left group but my fear is they are the only ones always ready with the pamphlets printed and the slogans in place. This had no slogan...just the symbol.

NEWSFLASH: CIA Officer Fired for Leaking Classified Info to Media

WASHINGTON — A CIA officer has been relieved of his duty after being caught leaking classified information to the media.

Citing the Privacy Act, the CIA would not provide any details about the officer's identity or assignments. It was not immediately clear if the person would face prosecution. The firing is a highly unusual move, although there has been an ongoing investigation into leaks in the CIA.

"The officer has acknowledged unauthorized discussions with the media and the unauthorized sharing of classified information," said CIA spokesman Paul Gimigliano. "That is a violation of the secrecy agreement that everyone signs as a condition of employment with the CIA."

One official called this a "damaging leak" that deals with operational information and said the fired officer "knowingly and willfully" leaked the information to the media and "was caught."

The CIA officer was not in the public affairs office, nor was he someone authorized to talk to the media. The investigation was launched in January by the CIA's security center. It was directed to look at employees who had been exposed to certain intelligence programs. In the course of the investigation, the fired officer admitted discussing classified information including information about classified operations.

"The damage has been very severe to our capabilities to carry out our mission," Goss said in February, adding that a federal grand jury should be impaneled to determine "who is leaking this information."

I am serious, folks. If Iraq settles down now that it looks like they have reached agreement on the Government, the Dems fall apart in corruption scandals and our troops start coming home in increasing numbers ... people are fickle. W's numbers can turn on a dime. One thing Americans have a soft spot for is someone who was kicked when they were down only to get up and be vindicated in the end. All this crap the Dems and press are spewing could actually lead to their downfall.

If more and more world governments line up with us on Iran and we seem to build a world consensus, I could see Bush being near 50% approval by election day. The Democrats are, I believe, going to have to start sleeping in a very unsavory bed they have made for themselves.

If that is the Mary McCarthy, she had a TON of access over the years. Looks she got a choice appointment in Clinton's National Security Council. Her career is over unless she decides to hit the moonbat speaking circuit. She is toast. What is even worse is that she was in the with the IG. It was her job to find leakers. Her connections with the previous Democratic administration and her position within CIA coming on the same day as the top Democratic ethics committee member has to step aside isn't looking good. The Democrats got hit with both barrells today.

It sounds like THAT Mary McCarthy alright. But there also appears to be more going on. From the AP:

...

The Associated Press has learned the officer was a CIA veteran nearing retirement, Mary McCarthy. Reached Friday evening at home, her husband would not confirm her firing.

...

Citing the Privacy Act, the CIA would not disclose any details about the officer's identity or what that person might have told the news media. However, a law enforcement official confirmed there was a criminal investigation under way, but it did not involve the fired CIA officer.

...

Justice Department officials declined to comment publicly on the firing and whether the matter had been referred to federal prosecutors for possible criminal charges. One law enforcement official said there were dozens of leak investigations under way.

Well, it would definitely seem to be business as usual in DC. Dump bad news on Friday at 4:50 - just as I'm heading out of the office. Not only does the CIA fire one of the leakers, but it's part of a bigger hunt to get to the bottom of all the CIA leaking that's been going on.

Right Wing Nut House tries to connect the dots and put the McCarthy firing into the context of a leak hunt that used the EU secret prison story as the bait. I'm not quite sure that was the case, but it probably needs some more facts to firm up at this point before you can make that conclusion.

No matter though, because my suggestion that Risen's Pulitzer should come with a subpoena, indictment, and handcuffs might come true after all.
