Cycle of Violence: Blanket of Smug
Today’s ride: 41.04 miles, bringing the total for the weekend to 95.24 miles. It rained a bit last night and the weather today was excellent, with air about as fresh and clean as Los Angeles ever gets. But this was the Day of the Oblivious, with an amazing number of people on the bike path who seemed to believe they were completely alone in a private bubble, impervious to harm, and uncaring about their own or anyone else’s safety. Many of them listening to iPods so loud you could hear the music blaring out of their little white earphones as you got close. I lost count of the runners, skaters, and weekend cyclists who made sudden stupid moves without looking, then responded to a warning with a snide, defensive remark. The air may have been free of smog, but the smug level was dangerously elevated.
