You know your massive illegal immigration protests are starting to backfire when even Teddy Kennedy is willing to say publicly that “the Star Spangled Banner ought to be sung in English. Period.”

Another take on United 93 when it was screened in Manhattan:

In the lobby, the crowd waiting outside the bathroom for friends was somber. Several said that it hadn’t been much different than they had expected. And almost in unison they said that they wouldn’t have come if writer/director Paul Greengrass hadn’t gotten the go ahead of the Flight 93 families. “It would have been a Hollywood thing, not true,” said Courtney Carey.

When Giovanni Ureña emerged from the men’s room most had already ebbed out the far doors. After the movie he had had to splash cold water on his face. He muttered “wow” several times, and said he was still trying to breathe. But his thin moustache and goatee hemmed in an eager smile.

On Sunday, September 9th, Ureña had played a wedding with his band at Windows on the World, the restaurant on the 107th floor of the North Tower. He worked in the South Tower, as did his girlfriend. They both had Monday the 10th off, but went in anyway, on a lark. They went to the top of floor where they scratched “Elsa + Giovanni Forever” on a piece of exposed metal. At work the next day Giovanni left his office on the 14th floor as soon as American 11 hit the North Tower, and escaped before the collapse. Elsa was still at hers on the 104th when United 175 hit, and did not escape. A small red pin on his sport coat’s lapel helps him remember a friend of his, in the fire department, who also died that day.

Watching the movie, he felt the same frightening sense of the surreal he had felt; the same helplessness. Though there was something else too.

“The fact that I came to see this,” he explained, his voice picking up, “it proves my strength, like them. [You watch it] and you know that you could do the same.”

Several of Giovanni’s band mates were wary of the film. “But I told them, ‘Hold on guys, it’s not Brokeback Mountain. You can face this.’” He plans to recommend it to all his friends.

The surest way to seed secessionist movements 50 years down the line is to encourage multiple languages in the US now. Lingustic differences are right up there with religion as a source of a nation's fragmentation.

25 logger phd  Mon, May 1, 2006 1:46:55pm

From the linked article above:

The early afternoon outside was a crisp 60°, cloudless and uncomfortably bright. Being Saturday, the Ground Zero construction site was still, though the sound of crane winches and hammers from numerous other nearby projects reverberated across it. On the far side of the site from the theater, along Church Street , the usual stream of tourists were shading their eyes to read the museum-like placards and putting their digital cameras right up against the fence to get the closest shot. An Indian family meandered down the sidewalk. The daughter was saying to her father, “They made it happen. They made it happen. Otherwise they would have fallen like…,” she made a gesture with her hands that illustrated a tower tipping over.

Just what we need, more signs of the Apocalypse. Teddy Kennedy knows how to read an opinion poll when someone shoves it under his stippled nose.

Who's going to be screwed from this Communist revival? The people who want amnesty. Actual citizens are against illegals telling us how to run the United States, eh, guessing, close to 3:1? Throw in the annoying disruptions, far-Left support, and nobody is going to suddenly say "By George, they're right!"

24% Hold Favorable Opinion of Protesters

Heading into a day of planned protests and boycotts for immigrant rights, just 24% of American voters have a favorable opinion of the people who have recently marched and protested for immigrant rights in major cities.

Just 12% of American voters support full amnesty.

At the same time, 56% believe that our national policy goal should be to welcome all immigrants except national security threats, criminals, and those who would live off the U.S. welfare system

OT: AP gives final judgement.Without illegal immigrants we are fucked..PERIOD:

Immigrants Demonstrate Economic Clout

Illegal immigrants made their point Monday: Without them, Americans would pay higher prices and a lot of work wouldn't get done.

As nationwide demonstrations thinned the work force in businesses from meat-packing plants to construction sites to behind the counter at McDonald's, economists said there can be no dispute within the context of the contentious immigration issue that the group wields significant clout in the U.S. economy.

"If illegal immigration came to a standstill, it would disrupt the economy," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Economy.com. "It would lead to higher prices for many goods and services, and some things literally would not get done. It would be a major adjustment for our economy, for sure."

Another economist, Diane Swonk, said it would be an economic mistake to restrict entry and work rights when revising immigration policy.

Actually, the clicking sounds are from the Khoi-San languages, which were spoken by the pre-hisoric peoples of Africa before Bantu-speaking agricultural-based peoples became prevaalent over the continent. Khoi-San languages sre now confined to the Kalahari and a couple of pockets in Tanzania. Zulu is a Bantu language.

Same geographic ballpark, though!

From Wikipedia:

Distribution
Clicks occur in all the Khoisan languages of southern Africa, and in several neighbouring Bantu languages, such as Nguni (Zulu, Xhosa, Swazi, and Ndebele), Sesotho, Yeyi of Botswana, and the Mbukushu, Kwangali, and Gciriku languages of the Caprivi Strip, which borrowed them from Khoisan languages. Clicks also occur in Sandawe and Hadza, two languages of Tanzania traditionally classified as Khoisan, as well as in Dahalo, a nearby endangered South Cushitic language of Kenya, which may retain them from an episode of language shift.

The Southern African Khoisan languages only utilize root-initial clicks. Hadza, Sandawe, and several of the Bantu languages also allow syllable-initial clicks within roots, but in no language does a click close a syllable or end a word.

The only non-African language known to employ clicks as regular speech sounds is Damin, a secret ritual code used by speakers of Lardil in Australia. One of the clicks in Damin is actually an egressive click, using the tongue to compress the air in the mouth for an outward (egressive) "spurt".

English and many other languages may use clicks in interjections, such as the dental "tsk-tsk" sound used to express disapproval, or the lateral click used with horses. In Ningdu Chinese, flapped nasal clicks are used in nursery rhymes. Clicks will occasionally turn up elsewhere, as in the special registers twins sometimes develop with each other.

70 Beagle  Mon, May 1, 2006 2:36:28pm

Each illegal costs the United States 2K plus, annually. That doesn't count criminal conduct or the inherent risks in open borders.

FPM has a good op-ed.

By one estimate, every illegal alien household in America on average consumes at least $2,736 more in taxpayer-funded services than it pays in taxes each year. This adds a total burden that could exceed $27 billion on American citizen taxpayers.

Then there's depressed wages and the psychological factor which makes good work seem beneath those born in America. I saw a good article which showed that this phenomenon comes after the flood of immigration. Over time, it will amount to a helot class.

You know what happened to the Spartans?

Delirium tremens

Delirium tremens (colloquially, the DTs, "the horrors", "the shakes" or "rum fits") is a condition usually associated with complete alcohol withdrawal. However, delirium tremens can appear after a rapid reduction in the amount of alcohol being consumed by heavy drinkers, and also occurs as a complication of benzodiazepine and barbiturate withdrawal. It only occurs in individuals with a history of constant, long-term alcohol consumption. Delirium tremens typically manifests about 18 to 24 hours after discontinuation of alcohol consumption, but can appear on the second or third day of abstinence.

Five percent of acute ethanol withdrawal cases progress to delirium tremens[1]. Unlike the withdrawal syndrome associated with opiate or stimulant addiction, delirium tremens (and alcohol withdrawal in general) can be fatal. Mortality can be up to 35% if untreated, though if treated early, death rates may be as low as 5%.

Symptoms
The symptoms include severe, uncontrollable tremors of the extremities and intense hallucinations such as insects, snakes or rats. These may be related to the environment, e.g., drawings on wallpaper that the patient would perceive as giant spiders ready to attack her or him. Unlike hallucinations associated with schizophrenia, delirium tremens hallucinations are primarily visual, but associated with tactile hallucinations such as sensations of something crawling on the subject. Other symptoms include agitation, confusion and the associated alcohol withdrawal fits. Secondary symptoms can be anxiety, panic attacks or paranoia.

All I know is, the only impact I felt from this rally in LA is there was less traffic and I probably got better gas mileage.

#68 Killgore Trout:

No mention in the story of what punishment, if any, the imam got. The poor wee lamb. And she'll get more at home, no doubt, for walking on his prayer rug.

I can't tell you what seeing that does to me. She's at an age where she's already been contaminated and even if you got her away from that environment, it's probably too late and the 'cult' doctrine would follow her her whole life. But they might be able to save her.

She'd probably pine for home though and and eventually you'd have to take her back. It's a fantasy that you could ever really rescue her from the life she's been born to. But some women get free. I was going to use Bat Ye'or and Brigitte Gabriel as examples but neither of them, though from the Middle East, were ever Muslim though they grew up with them and knew the cult/religion intimately.

It's a male dominated world; more, it's a Middle Eastern, Muslim, male dominated world. A woman can't win. The best she can hope for is to make herself inconspicuous and hope to get free some day. Heartbreaking!

God help me but I actually agree with Teddy. I personally do not support the boycott. I recently became a US citizen, March 1/06. I've been here for 13 years. Married to a citizen for 11. Here legally with a green card. Still took three years to get it done and a few hundred dollars. I believe that anyone here illegally who wants to become a citizen should without fear of being deported be able to go and fill out an application for a green card first, pay the fees, go through the scrutiny and background checks and then get in line like the rest of us. No free lunches, I say!

Congratulations, Maui Girl!

I have a friend who was put on a boat after the fall of Saigon by his Mom at age 14. He was on that boat with his 16 year old brother.

Muslim pirates raided the boat and took some girls. It was mostly kids on the boat. Killed the adults.

He and his brother landed in the Phillipines and got asylum here. Luong got his citizenship at age 22, and finished his Phd in EE by age 24. He walked around with an American flag during his citizenship party. Was happier then than at his graduation party.

His brother and his family are doing well, too.

Mom came over for some visits with her grandchildren before she died.

That is what America and immigration is all about.

Couple charged with human trafficking

EDINBURG — A Mission couple accused of bringing two Guatemalan women to the U.S. and forcing them into domestic slavery will stand trial Monday in Hidalgo County’s first proceeding under a 2003 law criminalizing human trafficking as a state felony.

Juan Carlos Ramos, 33, and his wife, Ellilian De Leon Ramos, 35, are charged with two counts of human trafficking, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Their trial is set for Monday in 370th state District Judge Noe Gonzalez’s courtroom.

The couple is accused of paying a coyote $250 to transport cousins Maria de Jesus Batres and Floridalma Flores and then forcing them to work in their home and businesses without compensation.
The lawsuit is pending in Judge Bobby Flores’ 139th state District Court and the women are represented by Abner Burnett, director of the South Texas Civil Rights Project. Burnett, who could not be reached for comment by deadline, is helping the women attempt to obtain U.S. visas.

The suit claims the women were brought from Matamoros on Nov. 12, 2004, by a coyote and promised employment, housing and board. Instead, the suit states, “the plaintiffs were forced to work without compensation at the homes of some of the defendants and at the adult day care center. The plaintiffs were subjected to sexual harassment and battery, and emotional and physical abuse.”

The family threatened to turn the women over to immigration authorities and forced them to work up to 21 hours per day, “often denied sufficient food and liquids,” the lawsuit claims.

The women escaped though a window in one of the homes where they were being held Jan. 11, 2005.

Coconuts kill more people a year than sharks yet there is no movie called "Falling Nut Three"

109 Gordon  Mon, May 1, 2006 3:02:20pm

I'm to the left of Ted Kennedy on this one.

I have no problem with the Star Spangled Banner being sung in Spanish. Patriotism for our great country doesn't have to be expressed only in English, and I for one am glad that those of our citizens who speak only Spanish or are bilingual are patriotic Americans too, and not patriotic Mexicans or Salvadorans or Panamanians who happen to live in the United States.

And we all know that to get ahead in this country you have to learn fluent English. The immigrants from Latin America certainly know this - by the third generation over 3/4 of them don't speak any Spanish at all. Only left-wing multiculturalists don't understand it.

But until they fully learn English, why not support patriotism for this great country in Spanish? I would like to see additional versions in Vietnamese, Tagalog, Arabic, Hindi, and any other language spoken by immigrants.

loser

So what happens when you sing those Spanish words to the same tune -- remember, a borrowed British one -- as we use for "The Star-Spangled Banner"? Are you then singing a "Spanish version" of the national anthem? No, of course not. You are free to sing any words to that tune, and unless they happen to be identical to Key's you are not singing the national anthem. Or you may recite Key's words aloud, and unless you happen also to change your intonation so as to produce the melody of "To Anacreon in Heaven," you are not singing the national anthem. You are singing the national anthem when, and only when, you pronounce Key's words to Smith's melody. Change anything, and you are reciting some other poem or singing some other song.

Valborg violence mars celebrations

Sweden is going down the tubes.

In Gribbylund in Täby, north of Stockholm, two people were arrested after a fight between two youth gangs, in which iron rods were used as weapons. One person was taken to hospital and a 20 year old man is suspected of attempted manslaughter after being accused of using a small axe.

The incident appears to have been a row between a gang of Swedes and a gang with immigrant backgrounds who have previously been in conflict with each other, said Elisabeth Wernsten at Täby police.

At Brommaplan in west Stockholm, three boys in their late teens were arrested on suspicion of serious assault after attacking several people with a hammer.

In several parts of Sweden the police had worked to prevent the supply of alcohol to young people. In Östersund 100 litres of spirits destined for underage drinkers was seized by police before a celebration.

In Lund police also concentrated their resources on stopping youth boozing, while in Uppsala, another major student town, police took in 57 people for drunkenness between Sunday morning and Monday morning.

Of those, twelve were under the age of 18 and the youngest was a 13 year old girl.

#109 Nodrog:

It wouldn't be so bad if the Spanish version were a direct translation but it's not. It's a Mexican/Spanish 'call to arms' and is NOT a direct translation of the Francis Scott Keye piece penned during a battle while he waited to deliver a message. The story in the song has a history and tells of the battle he's watching and how through all the sound and fury, the flag still sparked above the battle.

Instead they've used some of the tune, pumped up the beatphrases, turned them to reference Mexican feelings and beefs. It's a bit of a screed set to the Star Spangled Banner. Not cool!

English was the language of assimilation, and caring about, respecting and choosing to get to know all of your neighbors in your community. The home you chose to run to.

TO ANACREON IN HEAV'N
(the original lyrics to the tune of "The Star Spangled Banner")

To Anacreon in Heav'n,
Where he sat in full glee,
A few Sons of Harmony
Sent a petition
That he their Inspirer
And Patron would be;
When this answer arrived
From the Jolly Old Grecian:
"Voice, Fiddle, and Flute,
No longer be mute,
I'll lend you my name
And inspire you to boot,

Chorus:

And besides I'll instruct you,
Like me, to intwine
The Myrtle of Venus
With Bacchus's Vine."

2. The news through Olympus
Immediately flew;
When Old Thunder pretended
To give himself airs.
"If these Mortals are suffered
Their scheme to pursue,
The devil a Goddess,
Will stay above stairs.
Hark, already they cry,
In transports of joy,
'Away to the Sons
Of Anacreon we'll fly,

Chorus:

And there with good fellows,
We'll learn to intwine
The Myrtle of Venus
With Bacchus' Vine.

3. "The Yellow-Haired God
And his nine fusty Maids
From Helicon's banks
Will incontinent flee,
Idalia will boast
But of tenantless shades,
And the bi-forked hill
A mere desert will be.
My Thunder no fear on't,
Shall soon do its errand,
And dam'me I'll swing
The Ringleaders I warrant.

Chorus:

I'll trim the young dogs,
For thus daring to twine
The Myrtle of Venus
With Bacchus's Vine."

4. Apollo rose up,
And said, "Pry'thee ne'er quarrel,
Good King of the Gods,
With My Vot'ries below:
Your Thunder is useless"--
Then showing his laurel,
Cry'd "Sic evitabile
Fulmen, you know!
Then over each head,
My laurels I'll spread,
So my sons from your Crackers
No mischief shall dread,

Chorus:

While, snug in their clubroom,
They jovially twine
The Myrtle of Venus
With Bacchus's Vine."

5. Next Momus got up
With his risible Phiz
And swore with Apollo
He'd cheerfully join --
"The full tide of Harmony
Still shall be his,
But the Song, and the Catch,
And the Laugh shall be mine.
Then, Jove, be not jealous
Of these honest fellows."
Cry'd Jove, "We relent,
Since the truth you now tell us:

Chorus:

And swear by Old Styx,
That they long shall intwine
The Myrtle of Venus
With Bacchus's Vine."

6. Ye Sons of Anacreon,
Then join hand in hand;
Preserve Unanimity,
Friendship, and Love!
'Tis yours to support
What's so happily plann'd;
You've the sanction of Gods,
And the Fiat of Jove.
While thus we agree,
Our toast let it be:
"May our Club flourish Happy,
United, and Free!

Chorus:

And long may the Sons
Of Anacreon intwine
The Myrtle of Venus
With Bacchus's Vine."

154 St. Pancake  Mon, May 1, 2006 3:32:15pm

Have not seen this before.
At last our lefties see the light

How comes it that Ramsey Clark, the equivalent public face in America, is one of Saddam’s legal team and has argued that he was justified in committing the hideous crimes of which he stands accused? Why is the left’s beloved cultural icon, Michael Moore, saying that the “insurgents” in Iraq are the equivalent of the American revolutionaries of 1776?

I believe there are three explanations for this horrid mutation of the left into a reactionary and nihilistic force. The first is nostalgia for the vanished “People’s Democracies” of the state socialist era. This has been stated plainly by Galloway and by Clark, whose political sect in the United States also defends Castro and Kim Jong-il.

The bulk of the anti-war movement also opposed the removal of the Muslim-slayer Slobodan Milosevic, which incidentally proves that their professed sympathy with oppressed Muslims is mainly a pose.

However, that professed sympathy does help us to understand the second motive. To many callow leftists, the turbulent masses of the Islamic world are at once a reminder of the glory days of “Third World” revolution, and a hasty substitute for the vanished proletariat of yore. Galloway has said as much in so many words and my old publishers at New Left Review have produced a book of Osama Bin Laden’s speeches in which he is compared with Che Guevara.

Bolivia Military Told to Occupy Gas Fields

LA PAZ, Bolivia - President Evo Morales ordered soldiers to occupy Bolivia's natural gas fields Monday and threatened to evict foreign companies unless they give Bolivia control over the entire chain of production.

Morales sent soldiers and engineers with Bolivia's state-owned oil company to installations and fields tapped by foreign companies - including Britain's BG Group PLC and BP PLC, Brazil's Petroleo Brasileiro SA, Spanish-Argentine Repsol YPF SA, France's Total SA and U.S.-based Exxon Mobil Corp. The companies have six months to agree to new contracts or leave Bolivia, he said.

Morales, a leftist allied with Cuba's Fidel Castro and Venezuela's Hugo Chavez in seeking to blunt U.S. influence in the region, had pledged to exert greater state control over the industry since winning election in December, becoming Bolivia's first Indian president.

It comes as Ecuador argues with Washington over a new oil royalties law and less than a month after Chavez ordered the seizure of oil fields from Total and Italy's Eni SpA when the companies failed to comply with a government demand that operations be turned over to Venezuela's state oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela SA.

Iran complains to UN chief over threat of US attack [No, really!]

[Link: news.yahoo.com...]

Iran complained to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan over what it perceives as the threat of a United States attack, as the regime continued to defy demands to halt its disputed nuclear drive.
In a letter forwarded to the United Nations chief by Iran's ambassador in New York, Mohammad Javad Zarif, the regime condemned "American officials for their illegitimate and open threats to use force against the Islamic republic of Iran".
"These are in obvious contravention of international rules and the principles of the United Nations," the letter was quoted as saying by the official news agency IRNA.
It said that "these rude threats have recently been publicised through some reports in US newspapers", and noted a report in The New Yorker magazine last month which said US military planners had even looked into using nuclear 'bunker-busters' to strike Iran's atomic facilities.
"These (threats) have entered a new stage, with the refusal of US officials to deny these reports," the letter said, calling for "serious attention" as well as "quick and firm action" from the world body.

One of the reasons the Muslim Brotherhood and other Muslim organizations have grafted onto this movement is that they can use them by proxy to change laws, then use THAT as precedent when they want something changed themselves. And the three groups will triangulate and support each other's causes in future. You'll see them coming out on behalf of Muslims.

I strongly suspect Fox of Mexico to be in league with the Arabs. I believe there have been some visits back and forth at various levels between HAMAS and Mexican authorities and FOX has been entertained by the Saudi's, I believe. I'd have to google to find it all and I'm too tired to bother, but I believe we should all keep an open mind about connections between the Islamists and a number of the banana republics. Chavez for sure has made deals with the Arabs and Palestinians and now I understand there's been another socialist elected. I need a scorecard to keep track of it all.

Basically, it looks like what Kennedy tried to prevent, with the help of the Islamists beavering away with deals to undercut the US, has at last come true and that a Communist resurgence is definitely underway in Latin American countries. Yes, the fact that this isn't a direct translation is discussed at the Wikipedia link I gave above. But I don't think that most of the people who have discussed this topic on the air and elsewhere have made that distinction.

Here's what that entry says re "Nuestro Himno".

A Spanish language translation called "Nuestro Himno" ("Our Anthem") was created in 2006 as a show of support for Latino/Hispanic immigrants in the United States as a response to a proposed crackdown on illegal immigration. Similar to the English version of the Canadian national anthem, which was set to the tune of the French version but is not related to the text thereof, this song or himno is merely inspired by and is only an approximate not a word by word translation of the stanzas selected from Key's poem. As such, no claim is made that it is the Spanish language version of the United States' national anthem.

Ahh, but we insist on democracy and freedom according to our terms. We, as a country, are attempting to force our values on the rest of the world. If we as a country are doing such a wonderful philanthropic job of instilling freedom and democracy across the globe...then why do so many countries hate us? Why do even our allies consider Americans and their government as obnoxious, pushy, selfish, etc if we are so selfless and only want to save these poor people from their leaders and give them freedom? Our "generosity" is going to be our country's downfall.

What chills me is the rot from within. Colleges have become cesspools of statism and the thought police. Risking oversimplification, it always comes down to liberty versus the utopians. The utopians don't respond to reason. Whether it's religous, political, or both, the utopian ideal will invariably create a dystopia. Liberty is a hard sell because it offers no concrete answers or unified theory of everything. It just works better. It's messy and people must be tolerant, but not the smothering "tolerance" of PC. Liberty means the right to offend, challenge, and make "mistakes." Every great advance I can think of was viewed as idiotic at one time.

Viewing people as a means to an end instead of ends unto themselves is another way of looking at it. Socialists, fascists, and theocrats all share this unrealistic tendency which makes them very angry, wrong, and yet unwavering in their beliefs.

TQC

They translated the Star Spangled Banner into French?

That's what it says. Apparently, the translation was done by the Acadians of Louisiana. If you're not already familiar with their story, you may be interested in a brief overview of who the Acadians were and how they came to be in Louisiana.

Like the Spanish version that everyone is concerned about now, these earlier translations were done for people who came to the U.S. not speaking English. It's worth noting that none of these versions has survived in popular usage. It's likely that this Spanish song would go away too as Spanish-speaking people become more assimilated.

A study that I read recently indicated that there is no evidence that the current generation of Spanish-speaking immigrants assimilates any more slowly than do previous immigrants from other places. In general, by the time a family produces its third generation from the date of immigration, they speak English and know very little of their native language (i.e., the grandchildren of immigrants speak English and know little of the language their grandparents speak).

I'm sure many of you, as I do, have grandparents that were legal immigrants, that worked hard and raised families, in some cases became citizens and were proud to vote. They earned, were not given, everything they had. Some, though it was difficult, learned fluent english, including singing the SSB. I get the feeling that this present group thinks they are the only immigrants to come to and work menial jobs. Most that came here were coming from hard times. A great-grandfather was taken to Siberia and never heard from again. The Soviets tried to stamp out the Lithuanian language, many people were forced to move to other areas so that Russian speaking families could move in. Many people from many countries have suffered hardships but most came legally. I don't know of any country that has their anthem sung in anything other than the native language.

234 Beagle  Mon, May 1, 2006 4:55:43pm

It's not translating it or singing it that's the problem. It's the idea the United States will work without a common language. Evolving into a multilingual culture is possible, but an experiment which fails time and again. With English being the de facto Lingua Franca of the world, should we experiment with what works?

The debate goes far beyond the song to a Hispanic separatist movement, a Quebecois in the United States.

Should I learn Spanish? Sure, especially living here. But I must be able to get by in English. I'll make sure Zachary can speak Spanish. I took French, probably the greatest "d-oh" decision I could have made given where I live.

Morales said soldiers and engineers with Bolivia's state-owned oil company would be sent to installations operated by foreign petroleum companies.

"The time has come, the awaited day, a historic day in which Bolivia retakes absolute control of our natural resources," Morales said in a speech from the San Alberto petroleum field in southern Bolivia to decree what he called a nationalization of the natural gas industry. ENGLISH LYRICS
Verse 1
The day is breaking, do you see it? In the light of the dawn?
What we so acclaimed at nightfall?
Its stars, its stripes,
flew yesterday
In the fierce battle
in a sign of victory,
The glow of battle, in step with liberty
At night they said: "It's being defended!"

Chorus
Oh say!
The voice of your starry beauty
is still unfolding
Over the land of the free
The sacred flag?

Verse 2
Its stars, its stripes,
Freedom, we are equal
We are brothers, in our anthem.
In the fierce combat in a sign of victory
The glow of battle, in step with liberty
My people keep fighting
It's time to break the chains
At night they said: "It's being defended!"
Oh say! Your starry beauty is still unfolding.

Okay, so it isn't as bad as I thought. It's still NOT the Star Spangled Banner or a translation of it. It is simply a different song.

Over the land of the freee!
And the hooome of the braaave!

Proponents of Spanish Anthem Point to Rice

WASHINGTON - President Bush wants people to sing the national anthem in English only. Promoters of singing it in Spanish are pointing to comments by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice - and her department's Web site - as ammunition for their side of the argument.

There are four Spanish versions on USINFO.State.gov, a multi-language Web site.

"I've heard the national anthem done in rap versions, country versions, classical versions," Rice said Sunday on CBS's "Face the Nation." "The individualization of the American national anthem is quite under way."

The State Department site for some time has offered translations of the U.S. Constitution, pledge of allegiance and other documents in French, Arabic and other foreign languages to help people understand America better.

Looks like we have only a couple more hours before the U.S. does not exist do to the protest devastating our country to bits.

The net cost to the federal government in 2002 for public services provided to illegal aliens was $10.4 billion or $2,736 per household according to a report by the Center for Immigration Studies. Estimates for 2005 put the amount at $11.7 billion or $3,080 per household.

Illegal Alien Costs By Social Service

Lost Revenue: The U.S. may be foregoing up to $35 billion in lost tax revenue because of the growing size of the underground labor market using illegal workers in the cash economy, according to a January, 2005 report by the Wall Street firm Bear Sterns.

Health Costs: Medicaid costs for illegal aliens and their U.S.-born children are $2.8 billion annually, according to a study by the Center for Immigration Studies. Approximately 70% of households headed by illegal aliens have at least one person without medical insurance, compared to 20% of all other households. The federal government spends $250 million each year reimbursing states for emergency medical services provided to illegal aliens, which is less than 10% of the true cost of those services.

Education Costs: The Center for Immigration Studies has shown that federal aid to K-12 public schools for the education of the children of illegal aliens is $1.4 billion annually, not including the cost of free school lunches. The total cost to state and local taxpayers for educating 3.5 million children of illegal aliens is estimated at $28.6 billion, according to a Federation for American Immigration Reform study.

Incarceration: Illegal aliens account for less than 5% of the U.S. adult population, but were 17% of the federal prison population in 2004, imposing a net cost of $1.8 billion in court and incarceration expenses

Unless, of course, they hold dual citizenship which puts into question their allegiance

I don't know anything about dual citizenship issue, i.e., who can get it, under what circumstances, and so on. I would think that the best way to get people invested in this country would be to do everything possible to help them fit in here. I don't have the sense that most of the people marching in the past few weeks want to go back, even though they may have relatives in Mexico or elsewhere. I'm sure it's always been true that immigrants to this country have left family behind. It's different now because travel and communication are easier than in previous generations, but being able to talk to Grandma back home doesn't mean that people won't become attached to the U.S.

Blogs get a special end-run
Memphis native, former Democratic National Committee general counsel, argues campaign finance laws should apply there, too

The main concern
If, like newspapers, television and radio, bloggers can claim an exemption from the campaign finance laws, any organization (except a political party or candidate's campaign committee) can collect and spend as much as it wants seeking to influence political contests, without disclosing where it came from.
"My concern is not with the average citizen who chooses to publish a blog and share his or her viewpoints on the Internet, but with the large corporations and unions who seek to unfairly influence campaigns by spending huge amounts of money under the guise of being a blog," she said in her FEC testimony.
Bloggers counter that, unlike the days of big media networks, in the "new media" universe, any one blog will be competing with thousands of others, its influence limited to the eyeballs it catches. In the age of Salon.com, journalism has been freed from printing presses and satellite trucks.

It's not translating it or singing it that's the problem. It's the idea the United States will work without a common language. Evolving into a multilingual culture is possible, but an experiment which fails time and again. With English being the de facto Lingua Franca of the world, should we experiment with what works?

I agree that this is a serious issue, although countries do survive with minority language groups (e.g., Canada, Belgium). India has, apparently, many language groups, and China, too, has, at least, Cantonese and Mandarin. (I'm not expert enough in this area to say how these differences affect the countries involved or, in the case of India and China, how similar to each other the languages are or what is taught in the schools.) There are probably other examples that I don't know about.

I'm pretty fond of English myself. I make my living as a writer and editor, and I also have a long history as a teacher of writing. So language is important to me, and I understand the importance of shared language as a bond between people.

But it doesn't appear that the English is likely to disappear as the language in which we operate as a society. This article discusses the "third generation" phenomenon that I mentioned above. It suggests that, although assimilation is somewhat slower with recent Spanish-speaking immigrants, the general finding that the vast majority of people become monolingual in English by the third generation still holds.

267 T. Jefferson  Mon, May 1, 2006 5:17:25pm

Personally, I would like to see about 2 years of real border control before we even start talking about any kind of citizenship/amnesty program. We have been down this road before and none of the enforcement promises have been kept.

Immigration Checkmate
by Victor Davis Hanson

If we controlled the borders in exchange for allowing current resident illegals to apply for citizenship, future legal and measured immigration from Mexico, while perhaps somewhat greater than from other countries, would cease to be either large or exceptional. The present perpetually replenished pool of aggrieved second-class unlawful residents would soon vanish.

Also gone would be the romance of "Alta California" — the strange notion that demography and the labor market will do what the law cannot and extend Mexico into the southwestern United States. We'd be able to jettison the "the borders crossed us" nonsense that tends to radicalize a shadow underclass and return to the notion that we are all part of a melting-pot society.

So, yes, we need to take our cue from the protestors in the street whose placards and banners at last broadcast their genuine desire to join us as Americans. Let us, the hosts, help resident illegal aliens to meet workable criteria to become citizens, as we ensure an end to the broken system of open borders and labor exploitation.

But let the present aliens only become Americans in the fullest linguistic, cultural and social sense — just as millions from all over the world have done before them.

Those of the left claim that racism fuels the anger over illegal immigration. Those on the right agree — but insist instead that the racism really comes from La Raza separatism on the part of the unassimilated Hispanic community.

Very soon we could learn who in this sad debate has been telling the truth about ethnic chauvinism. If conservatives would not worry over the ethnicity of these new Americans and thus allow most of those already here from Mexico to stay, then the onus will rest with the ethnic activists to urge rapid and full assimilation.

An immigrant does not have to give up his/her citizenship in his/her home country to become a US citizen. And relatively recently the law was changed to allow native-born US citizens to obtain foreign citizenship without having to give up their US citizenship. As an example, if you can prove one of your parents or grandparents was a citizen of Germany or the Republic of Ireland, you can get citizenship there and still retain your US citizenship.

I rarely disagree with VDH, but he's missing the boat on this one. With illegals gaining citizenship it undercuts rule of law, causes another flood of illegals hoping for the same path to citizenship, screws those who've lined up to come in legally, makes certain jobs look like underclass work, and could cause some new citizens to find ways to to milk the welfare system, moreso than right now. Then we "need" more illegals, again.

He should know better than anyone what a helot class leads to. We saw our first mini helot revolt today.

285 Thanos  Mon, May 1, 2006 5:30:10pm

It's apparent that the illegal immigrant marches took a long time and a lot of effort to organize, and it's not as spontaneous as people would believe. There's an interesting piece over at American Thinker about potential Hugo Chavez involvement, it's interesting that Sub-commander Marcos marched on our embassy today, and that Bolivia nationalized the natural gas fields, while Hugo took more oil fields. Expect gas to go up more folks, I hate to say it.

I think the communists got what they wanted, conflict, dissension, and opportunity to recruit while they ended up screwing the people's cause they organized the march for. They are going to put it in the W column because it furthers their cause.

The third generation? We'll all have taken the big dirt nap by that time, and Christ will have left Chicago.

That's what the historical pattern of language learning in the U.S. has been. Most often, people come to the U.S. as young adults. Their children learn to speak English in school, and they speak it to their children. A majority of the next generation is monolingual in English.

We're not talking about waiting three generations for people to learn to speak English. The idea is that, by the third generation, a large majority of the grandchildren of people who immigrated here would no longer speak Spanish.

I think, but I could be wrong, that it was Ed Morrisey today over at Captain Quarters, who was talking about United 93 and he recalled the heroism that Canada showed the US on 9/11, and he regrets its was never recognized properly.

When US air controllers shut down all flights, many international flights had to be rerouted. Canada accepted them, knowing full well they could have been filled with terroists who could inflict the same damage on Canada as had been inflicted on the US.

Once again, Canada, in its own quiet way, stood with the US, as they did during the Iranian Crisis back in the 80's.

So as much as we frequently smack down Canadians, this is a moment that we owe you a great big American THANKS. Personnally, I wish we had done it earlier.

MSNBC Confirms Plame Was Working On Iran When She Was Outed

This confirms what we have known: her cover was BLOWN by the Bush administration. And while she was working on Iran. A NOC exposed for political reasons. Because her husband dared to tell the truth about the lies this administration told to take us to war.

I'm not convinced it's really important, just another reason to scream "impeach' as far as I can tell.

Just My View wrote:

The idea is that, by the third generation, a large majority of the grandchildren of people who immigrated here would no longer speak Spanish.

The problem is that the Mexican immigration cannot really be compared to the earlier Ellis Island era ones. The drawbridge went up on Ellis Island in 1924 - and a lot of frankly racist thought went into that decision. (A best-seller of the time was "The Passing of the White Race." President Harding's campaign biographer stressed that Harding was of "pure American," i.e. WASP, stock.)

However, the end of widespread European immigration more or less put the spurs to assimiliation. You couldn't keep one foot in the Old World anymore; you had to ensure that your children, if not you yourself, learned English in order to move out of the old slum neighborhoods, which were depopulating due to a lack of fresh blood.

Because Mexico shares a border with the US and immigration from there shows no sign of abating, even if the third generation of today's immigrants speak English, there will still be plenty of new immigrants around speaking Spanish. There will be many more Mexicans in the States in 30 years, if current trends continue, but no drop, I would guess, in the number of people who speak only Spanish.

322 crosspatch  Mon, May 1, 2006 6:10:46pm

I suspect the NYT's reporter covering that beat knew too. Seems everyone in DC that covers that part of the government knew. Actually, how could they NOT know. Anyone that knew one of them would have figured it out immediately the minute they met the other in a social context.

So all I have heard so far is some reporter telling Rove that they heard that Wilson's wife Plame sent Wilson to Niger while working at CIA to which Rove supposedly replied "I heard that too". That isn't "outing" anyone. That appears to be all the information Fitz has at this point and is why there have been no indictments for any leaks. Because there probably weren't any. The press probably figured this one out by simple social networking.

Hey Gordon stopped by to set us straight.

I'm to the left of Ted Kennedy on this one.

I am shocked!

And we all know that to get ahead in this country you have to learn fluent English. The immigrants from Latin America certainly know this - by the third generation over 3/4 of them don't speak any Spanish at all. Only left-wing multiculturalists don't understand it.

Wow, signs of a functioning brain, again I
am shocked.

But until they fully learn English, why not support patriotism for this great country in Spanish? I would like to see additional versions in Vietnamese, Tagalog, Arabic, Hindi, and any other language spoken by immigrants.

I don't agree completly with this statement but I can certainly understand the thought process leading to it. This however is not the issue, the "Spanish version of the national athem" by the Reconquista movement that is stirring the pot is not the national anthem simply translated into Spanish. It is a different song they are calling the national anthem. That don't sit well with me.

BTW I'm sure I am repeating points made earlier in the thread, I have not read the whole thing.

#321 Miss Donna V.

Certainly the number of people in the U.S. who primarily speak Spanish will depend on how many enter the country and remain here. But the issue is not so much whether there are Spanish-speaking people here, but whether the people who come here learn to speak English. That can happen, even if new speakers of Spanish come. And the available evidence indicates that it is happening now. Although their progress toward being English-only speakers is somewhat slower than among other immigrants, current Spanish-speaking immigrant families are showing the same pattern of language learning as previous generations of immigrants from other countries.

You are right in pointing out that there are important differences, but I think that, as long as English is the language of education, commerce, science, and so on, it will be to the advantage of all immigrants--wherever they come from and however often they visit their original country--to learn it. Language learning will be a stepping stone to better jobs with better pay, just as it has been for past generations.

The price of gas is a reflection of worldwide demand. It's gone up in other countries as well. I doubt that having what is a relatively small part of our population leave would make much of a difference.

True. I didn't mean to be making a comparison, actually. My original post was just pointing out that there'd been translations that had come and gone at earlier points in history. Someone asked about the translation into French, and I explained how that had come about.

A study I read a couple years ago -- Center for Immigration Studies, IIRC -- calculated the price of tomatoes, etc. would rise about 3%, but tax savings would be about 10%. Get rid of all the illegals and save hundreds of billions of tax dollars currently going for schooling, crime, welfare, medical care, infrastructure (infrastructure costs $10,000 for each person added to a community), food banks, etc. Plus the tax burden would be spread among a higher percentage of the population since illegals do not pay taxes.

Savings elsewhere: hospital execs I interviewed in CA told me 1/4 of patients' hospital bills are costs shifted from "uncompensated care" for illegal aliens. Illegal aliens cost more to treat than US patients due to added costs such as translators, and the need to give them "incentives" (e.g. a year's supply of meds, hospital equipment, etc) to get them to leave the hospital!

So even if a head of lettuce costs a few cents more, you come out w-a-y ahead!

Happily, the jihadi's bad behaviour of late is starting to change minds and we have a new Prime Minister that seems to understand the enormity of the threat.

lol!

Actually, it is very easy to get most of them to leave at their own expense. Give them 30 days to leave -- with their dependents! -- and then they could apply for legal immigration, wait in line for approval, and perhaps eventually immigrate legally (most illegals would not qualify for legal immigration). Announce that those who do not leave will have all their money and property confiscated to pay for their deportation and they will be permanently barred from re-entry. Bar any application for "change of status" from anyone who has violated immigration law, and anyone who entered on a tourist visa ("tourist" visas are for tourism only, and job hunting while here on a tourist visa is prima facie evidence of visa fraud - already a felony).

An Executive Order could solve most of our illegal immigration problems within 30 days.

Sounds about right. I've read that around 25% of the charges for all medical services, and therefore for all medical insurance premiums, is to cover the unpaid bills hospitals and doctors must absorb. So, about 25% that everyone who actually pays for care or for insurance premiums goes to cover those who can't or won't pay their medical bills. And that's nationwide.

Gordon,

My grandfather was born in a lighthouse in Cuxhaven, Germany in 1887. He came to the US for the first time in 1903. He became a citizen, and died in 1963. I remember him telling me that not only did he want to speak English correctly and to think in English, he wanted to speak English with no accent. And he did. He must have been a true American.

WASHINGTON - President Bush wants people to sing the national anthem in English only. Promoters of singing it in Spanish are pointing to comments by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice — and her department's Web site — as ammunition for their side of the argument.

There are four Spanish versions on USINFO.State.gov, a multi-language Web site.

I came in late and then I saw Gordon's note. I did a quick find to see if he posted a follow-up to his original one. But there was none. (at least so far.)

I originally come from a nation where there are 26 official languages and more than 3500 spoken languages. I would expect that we would be the country where you would have the national anthem in more than one language. But wiser counsel prevailed and the song written by a Nobel Prize winner is still sung in the original language. None of the other different language groups felt that the national anthem needed to be in any other language.

I do not deny that there could be countries where they sing the National Anthem in more than one language. It could have been a decision taken based on the existing circumstances.

But we do not have any such circumstances, which would require the SSB to be sung in more than one language.

Drudge reports that Bush - Mr. Star Spangled Banner should be sung in English - himself sang the Star Spangled Banner in Spanish during his 2000 campaign:

Bush sang Star Spangled Banner en español during 2000 campaign
Wed May 03 2006 09:35:20 ET

"When visiting cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, or Philadelphia, in pivotal states, George W. Bush would drop in at Hispanic festivals and parties, sometimes joining in singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” in Spanish, sometimes partying with a “Viva Bush” mariachi band flown in from Texas."

So writes author Kevin Phillips in his book AMERICAN DYNASTY.

Last week, at the height of the illegal immigrant's boycott build up, Bush told reporters: "I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English."
