There is a firing range on the ground floor in that building. Could you smell gun smoke/powder from that far away?

"They said they heard gunfire in the Rayburn garage but this is a huge building, I'm guessing it's a car backfiring or balloons popping," said Gene Smith, chief of staff to Rep. Howard Berman (news, bio, voting record), D-Calif., who has an office in Rayburn.

I'm just curious - that's some sort of everyday occurrence?

Once again, we're seeing the kind of difficult work that the Capitol Police have to do on a day to day basis. They have the one of the toughest law enforcement jobs in the country, and jokers like Kennedy and McKinney don't help matters any.

11 SEan II  Fri, May 26, 2006 6:32:58am

I am now hearing that it originated in the garage and was reported as somthing that sounded like a gunshot, possibly a car backfifring.

12 zombie  Fri, May 26, 2006 6:33:41am

From the very bottom of the linked article:

In 1983, a late-night bomb, possibly set by someone protesting U.S. military action in Grenada and Lebanon, exploded just outside the Senate chamber. No one was injured.

Wow, I don't remember that at all.

Let's see, how likely is it that one of those radical wild-eyed Grenadans planted that 1983 bomb, versus an Islamic extremist from Lebanon? Hmmm?

13 Peter Verkooijen  Fri, May 26, 2006 6:33:42am

It's starting to look like another false alarm panic thing. Apparently there's even a firing range at the location.

Just another reason I loathe reporters.

Fox is showing some Capital Hill cop trying to ask reporters who were in the building what, if anything they saw. The didn't answer any of his questions even though he told them he knew nothing and was trying to get information from the as potential witnesses.

In other words, he was asking them to be decent human beings and responsible citizens. Sadly, that was beyond their combined abilities.

No, it has been discussed extensively and I decided not to go. Too time-consuming, too expensive, and, to be frank, the event will probably be a ridiculous flop. While it may be funny and entertaining to report on its futility and floppiness, I decided it wasn't worth the major excursion going there just to make that one point. I had been planning to go, but not any more.

Much more convenient would be if an L.A. or SoCal-based lizardoid made the trek instead of me, since they'd be a lot closer.

25 mj  Fri, May 26, 2006 6:45:24am

Well, as long as we're on the subject to gunshots at the Capital, this seems a good time to recall this incident. Please be sure to read to the end of the Wiki entry as the Hamas supporting former President reveals his love of all terrorists:

U.S. Capitol shooting incident (1954)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
This article describes one of two major shooting incidents that have taken place at the U.S. Capitol; the other is described at Russell Eugene Weston Jr.
The U.S. Capitol shooting incident of 1954 was an attack on March 1, 1954 by four Puerto Rican nationalists who shot thirty rounds using automatic pistols from the Ladies' Gallery (a balcony for visitors) of the U.S. House of Representatives into the floor of that chamber of the United States Capitol.

The attackers (Lolita Lebrón, Rafael Cancel Miranda, Andres Figueroa Cordero and Irving Flores Rodriguez) unfurled a Puerto Rican flag and began shooting at the 240 Representatives who were then debating an immigration bill.

Five representatives were wounded in the attack; one was seriously hurt. (The party breakdown, as reported by the Washington Post, was three Democrats and two Republicans.) The wounded lawmakers were Alvin M. Bentley (R-Michigan), who took a bullet to the chest, Clifford Davis (D-Tennessee), who was shot in the leg), Ben F. Jensen (R-Iowa), who was shot in the back, as well as George Fallon (D-Maryland) and Kenneth A. Roberts (D-Alabama). There are still bullet holes from the incident, in a drawer in a desk on the south side of the House floor.

In 1979, United States President Jimmy Carter freed the assailants, after they had spent 25 years in prison. Their release coincided with Fidel Castro's release of several American CIA agents being held in Cuba on espionage charges. Carter's administration denied that there were any connections, saying it was making a humanitarian gesture.

Dick Cheney just fired another lawyer.

27 mj  Fri, May 26, 2006 6:49:16am

Oh, as long as I brought up Puerto Rican terrorists, you might recall this gesture by President Clinton- yet another terror-supporting ex-President though not in the same league as Carter:

"Throughout the late 1970’s and mid-1980’s the Armed Forces of Puerto Rican National Liberation ("FALN" or in Spanish, Fuerzas Armadas Liberacion Nacional Puertoriquena) and the Popular Boricua Army (Ejercito Popular Boricua), commonly known as the Macheteros, claimed responsibility for numerous bombings and robberies, causing a reign of terror in both the United States and Puerto Rico. The FALN operated in the continental United States, while the Macheteros were active mostly in Puerto Rico.
United States law enforcement first learned of the existence of the FALN on October 26, 1974, the date the group issued a communiqué taking credit for five bombings in New York. . Ultimately, over the next decade, FALN activities resulted in 72 actual bombings, 40 incendiary attacks, 8 attempted bombings and 10 bomb threats, resulting in 5 deaths, 83 injuries, and over $3 million in property damage. ...

On August 11, 1999, President Clinton extended offers of clemency to sixteen terrorists incarcerated in federal prison. Prior to these offers, he had offered clemency to only three federal prisoners.

This story is obviously bogus. Washington, DC has the strictest gun control laws in the USA, ergo there could be no guns in the hands of wrongdoers.

35 republic  Fri, May 26, 2006 6:54:58am

Irregardless of the situation at the Capital, I suppose there is going to be a ever more "increasing" number of gun violence episodes, leading up to the U.N.'s world body meeting in NY on the 4th of July, 2006, to finalize the U.N. "Worldwide Gun Ban".

The insanity of that, is mindbogling, that the U.N. will meet on American soil, on our treasured 4th of July, to finalize a "Worldwide Gun Ban"!

I guess Americans will now tolerate anything!

Sad, sad, sad!

I THOUGHT IRAQ DIDNT HAVE ANY WMD........Speaking to a fervent congregation of prayers at Tehran University campus, Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani slammed western states' performance during the 8 years of Iraqi imposed war on Iran and said, "Westerners allowed Saddam to walk along the track for the production of the Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs), including chemical and even nuclear weapons and long-range missiles in a bid to block Iran's development, but the Iranian nation's patience and dedication defused all their plots."

Noting the change in the enemies' discourse and their abundant threats against Iran, he stressed, "History has proved that Iran will not allow anyone to usurp its rights, " adding, "Tehran does not wish to worsen the nuclear case, but we advise the world arrogance to revise its behavior."

Pointing to US President George W. Bush's confession of the US Army's mistreatment of prisoners in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo, Rafsanjani stated, "This proves that they have had many miscalculations in their strategies and they must be aware that they are repeating the same error in Iran's nuclear case."

Addressing the West, the Interim Friday Prayers Leader of Tehran warned the western states against their radical treatment of Iran's case, saying that the West would have to confess to its mistakes and errors in future if it decided to continue its current hostile behavior and efforts. The truth is, the entire Bay Area is a 24-hour-day YearlyKos all the time, so going to Vegas wouldn't be much different from just staying here. For example -- they'll have Joe Wilson at YearlyKos, but he already gave a couple talks here. Expose the Left has a screen shot of a woman being taken away from the Capitol on a gurney.

Comment from someone at taht site apparently watching the TV coverage

by the way, in case anyone isn’t near their TV, the woman was treated for anxiety or something… she wasn’t injured by the shooter

For all we know, it could be one of those estranged-husband-shoots-wife things.

Do they still have to give you a dollar, if you are the first? I had to when I was at OCS in Newport, R.I. in 1971. (Or did inflation raise that price?)

The FBI investigating? Isn't that illegal per Dennis Hastert's assertions? Oh noez!

This has got to be Rovian in origin - somehow.I can't begin to explain motive or anything else, such is the genius of Rove.

It makes me nuts too. And when did mOslems become mUslims? I asked this on Jihad Watch, but the thread was already dead. Does anybody out there know?

Republic if you are still here, When I was a freshman in college I was singled out in a class of 200 or so for using that misbegoten "word". Since that day I declared a jihad against that "word". I hope you were not offended by my sorry attempt at enlightenment, if so I am sorry.

I can't wait to hear your thoughts on TFK's posts ;)

This whole incident looks to me like a classic probing operation: Someone popped off a few rounds (could even have been blanks, or a starter pistol), then stood back to watch how the security forces reacted.

We had a similar incident one evening at the facility where I worked in northern Italy back in the early '80s (storage of what we euphemistically refered to as "US Government classified high explosives;" you do the math). It was actually pretty instructive for us, as well. We learned just how bad our Italian "security" force really was.

Anyway, whoever was behind this incident at the Capitol (along with everyone in America who owns a TV set) now knows how long it takes for the Capitol Police to respond, how many officers will show up, how they'll be equipped, etc.

No doubt many are detailed to the Memorial Day concert/extravaganza at the base of the Capitol this weekend.

Zombie

Living in the Bay Area, do you ever feel like your head is going to explode due to the constant barrage of lunacy from wacky LLLs? I truly think I would go insane living there.

112 lobo91  Fri, May 26, 2006 8:59:17am

Actually, after re-reading some of the reports, it occurs to me that there may not have even been any shots fired in the first place.

I haven't seen any reports referring to anyone who actually heard the shots. Apparently, someone called the Capitol Police and reported hearing shots. Anyone with a throwaway cell phone could have done that.

This thing is looking more and more like a probe to me...

12 zombie 1983 bombing in Senate

At 10:58pm, Monday, November 7, 1983, a bomb exploded just outside the Senate chamber, damaging the hallway, cloakroom and numerous pieces of artwork, including minor damage to the Henry Clay portrait. The door to S-208 was blown off and the elevator door just outside S-208 was buckled. Thankfully, no one was in the area at the time - the Senate had adjourned earlier than expected and the Mansfield room was empty following an earlier reception. There were no injuries and no structural damage to the building. The bomb was planted by a group calling itself the "Armed Resistance Unit" opposing military action in Grenada and Lebanon.

The Capitol Police need a new spokesperson, at this time.

118 TotallySirius  Fri, May 26, 2006 11:45:13am

Latest word is some idiot mistook the sound of a friggin jackhammer for gunshots.

How could anyone mistake those two sounds?

Unless..........

The idiot never heard a jackhammer before.

The idjit never heard a gunshot before.

Conclusion:

Mandatory gun training for everyone.

I'll bet the first thing that went through the Senators' minds (and I use that term loosely) was, "oh shit, giving Amnesty and Social Security to illegals really pissed off the American taxpayer."

Well, it sure was the first thing that went through mine! And I must confess to smiling at the thought.
