RetweetFBI Says Muslim Student Groups Not Monitored

Tue, Jun 6, 2006 at 1:40:48 pm PDT

On May 27 we noted a report in the Orange County Register that the FBI was ramping up investigations of Islamic extremism in Orange County, specifically at UC Irvine.

Last night the FBI met with Islamic student groups from the University of California Irvine (lgf: search) and the University of Southern California, to assure the Muslim groups that they could continue doing what they’re doing without fear of being investigated or watched in any way: Article: News - FBI says Muslims at UCI aren’t monitored. (Hat tip: Doss.)

IRVINE – The FBI and Muslim community leaders met again Monday night, one in a series of gatherings since 9/11 intended to promote a better understanding of each other.

The latest meeting was needed, Muslim leaders said, because of a report by Register columnist Frank Mickadeit last month in which Pat Rose, head of the FBI’s Orange County al-Qaida squad, was quoted as saying her agency was looking for potential terrorists here through a variety of electronic eavesdropping techniques.

Rose said the FBI is aware of large numbers of Muslims at UC Irvine and USC. And she said she was “quite surprised” that “there are a lot of individuals of interest right here in Orange County.”

Stephen Tidwell, assistant director in charge of the FBI in Los Angeles, told about 100 people gathered at the Islamic Center of Irvine, that “we do not, we cannot, we do not” monitor students at UC Irvine and USC. ...

He answered no when asked whether the FBI is monitoring Irvine’s Muslim community and said, “We would have to have reasonable cause to do that.”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations is very pleased:

Sabiha Khan, spokeswoman for the Council on American Islamic Relations in Anaheim, said the meetings have been helpful.

“Thankfully with improved training of the FBI we hear less and less of the questions about what mosque (Muslims) went to or what imam they liked to listen to,” Khan said.

Somehow I doubt the understanding went both ways. I've yet to hear about a seminar for Islamics to be more sensitive to the feelings of the West.

Surely the FBI is watching someone?

Maybe they are taking their orders from Pat Buchanan and A-n-t-i-w-a-r.com and watching the Jews.

There should be plenty of no-good-subversives trying to destroy the country in that group. If Paul Findley says it, it must be true.

WASHINGTON -- The October arrest of a London man who allegedly ran al Qaeda-linked Web sites and distributed jihadist propaganda kicked off a multinational investigation that culminated in last weekend's arrests in Canada, U.S. law enforcement officials and counterterrorism experts say. . . .
Officials now say there is evidence that Mr. Tsouli, better known by his Internet-screen name, Irhabi 007, was communicating with the Toronto cell, as well as with a separate cell in Atlanta.

I'd note that nobody in Atlanta has been arrested yet.

An odd turn of phrase, "reasonable cause". It confuses two 4th Amendment jurisprudence terms of art: "reasonable articulable suspicion", and "probable cause".

I hope it is crusader taqiyya, but I fear this is true ~ and I'll tell you why:
When a friend and I reported a "radical muslim" 2 1/2 years ago who had 5 passports under 5 names (all french passports) and was traveling under the cover of a middle aged white woman from England and her children, who had visited 9 countries and was at that time in the the US, who left boxes of cash in Mosques in each place...
and much, much more I can not write here,
we were treated by the FBI and Homeland Security to a spectacular display of apathy, cynicism, and rudeness.
As far as I know he is still at large.
I did get a fatwa though~ out of a Paris Mosque.

FBI does not monitor, it investigates and prosecutes allegations of federal crimes;

CIA and NSA collect and analyze information, that is, monitor subjects and areas of interest;

Phooey. This is a semantics game. The FBI does not investigate anyone based on their lawful activities. Being a student is lawful. Being Muslim is lawful. Therefore, the FBI does not "monitor" people JUST because they are Muslim students.

That does not mean a thing. The agent is reacting to the freakout caused by agent Rose's mention that the FBI is pursuing leads and surveiling "leads."

My guess is if a Muslim student is engaged in suspect activity, he/she will be a "lead" or a "suspect" and will be surveiled.

43 Reluctant Democrat  Tue, Jun 6, 2006 12:05:18pm

This looks to me like a non-story. Tidwell's remarks are carefully ambiguous, at least as reported.

Stephen Tidwell, assistant director in charge of the FBI in Los Angeles, told about 100 people gathered at the Islamic Center of Irvine, that "we do not, we cannot, we do not" monitor students at UC Irvine and USC.

"We will set aside whether (Rose) was accurate or it was reported accurately or not," he said in his opening remarks.

Tidwell explained how the FBI investigates tips and how a threat assessment is made and sent to agency headquarters in Washington.

"There are rules and guidelines as to how and why we conduct an investigation," he said.

So: we're not doing blanket wiretapping of students; I'm not saying either way whether there are 'individuals of interest' we are following here; and we have rules about how to conduct investigations.

To quote the brilliant, eloquent "joewilson": duh.

This is a careful statement of the obvious. It is NOT saying "we are ignoring any threats coming out of this community".

45 ORD neighbor  Tue, Jun 6, 2006 12:06:40pm

“Thankfully with improved training of the FBI we hear less and less of the questions about what mosque (Muslims) went to or what imam they liked to listen to,” Khan said.

Maybe they assume, as I do, all mosques and imams share this violent ideology.

47 Silhouette  Tue, Jun 6, 2006 12:07:32pm

Translating this is simple.

The FBI does not monitor UC Irvine and USC students just because they are UC Irvine and USC students.

The FBI does not monitor the Muslim community in general just because they are Muslim.

To do so would be against our laws.

However, the FBI most certainly is monitoring or investigating individual people, for specific documented justifications that meet our legal requirements, and these people may happen to be students, members of the Muslim community, or both.

One step forward and three steps back.

I don’t think we can truly fight the WOT (never mind win the damn thing) when law enforcement has to cater to the demands of enemy groups like CAIR.

I still notice every talking head and politician use the phrase “Muslim extremist” or “radical Islamism” and never just ‘Muslim’ or ‘Islam’. I know political correctness has hardened into a permanent fixture of the social landscape, but I don’t think we can succeed until we actually articulate what it is we’re fighting against. No?

I haven’t spotted the elusive ‘moderate Muslims’ and I’m deafened by their silence.

Do they actually exist?

Its funny (peculiar, not ha ha) that the FBI investigates Sami Al Arian for ten years, and yet seems so obtuse about other Muslim threats. I have to believe that they are watching mosques more than they let on. They have broken up far too many terrorist cells for it to be pure fortitude.

However, it is scary to think that after 9/11 we were at the apex of our will to root out Muslim terrorism and this is only how far we have come (or fallen backwards).

They saw the missile fly over Gaza.

The military said the target was a structure used by Palestinian groups to make and store rockets that are fired at Israel. There was no immediate word of casualties. Ambulances raced to the scene. (AP)

The FBI needs more agents that keep their mouths shut. Whether or not Tidwell (the AD in Charge of the LA office) is playing a semantic game to shut CAIR up or not, the orginal agent, Rose (head of the FBI’s Orange County al-Qaida squad) should have been smart enough to know that making that kind of statement in this PC environment was going to set off the CAIR types.

Isn't there anybody who can keep their damn mouth shut in the government these days?

Witnesses report

Which means we've got about equal chance that it was an IAF hit as opposed to a work accident.

Anytime anyone dies, witnesses report an IAF helicopter. 99-yr-old Palestinian grandma quietly passes away at home, and her children report they saw an IAF helicopter.

I once contacted the FBI about a "company" that was clearly attempting to defraud some of my colleagues.

I was amazed at the reaction. Basically, I was told that unless I could prove they had already broken the law the FBI would do nothing.

I told them it was obvious these guys were trying to bilk companies out of tens of thousands of dollars and that if they succeeded it would be too late to do anything. (I'm fairly sure the "company" would promptly close their office and bank account and disappear if someone fell for their scheme.)

At that point, the FBI agent who returned my call came awfully close to telling me it isn't against the law to try stealing.

In my oppinion if they aren't asking these questions, someone needs to be fired! The FBI is on our sides though, from insiders I always here that of any branch of the federal bureaucracy that is on our side it's the FBI, so they might be paying lip service to this BS, but that could be all this is...After 9/11 the FBI realized that what the Isralis were fighting wasn't a natinalist movement, it was jihad, they recognized they were wrong to ignore it then, blame themselves for alot of Jewish blood (they could have cut off the funding, clamped down on these Muslim groups)and vowed never to forget this...I hope they haven't

The FBI might not be watching these people,
but they are.

They are known in the spy trade as “Keyhole-class” satellites. And they have a resolution of 5 to 6 inches, meaning they can distinguish an object that small, but no smaller, on the ground. Two other satellites are radar-imaging, built by Lockheed Martin in Watertown, Colo. Their resolution is about 3 feet.
While satellites cannot read license plates, they can tell if a car has one. While they cannot tell a mullah by the length of his beard, they can help analysts figure out how many people are chanting along with him at a street demonstration. And while they cannot hover over an area and provide real-time images, other “assets” such as unmanned aerial vehicles, also known as drones, can do that.

5 or 6 inches,
I dont even pee outside anymore.

I actually live in a community with a large mosque. I often wonder if it’s under some kind of surveillance. I’m assuming it must be, but who knows-this is Massachusetts and they oppose the US Military from attending graduation to award scholarships so I’m guessing the FBI is SOL if they wanted to monitor it. The local Muslims pretty much keep to themselves. No large demonstrations for or against anything. I hear they’re not big on public schools either, but I don’t have kids, so it’s second hand info. Anyway, like I said, they keep a low profile, if you know what I mean. They seem pretty much like everyone else (except for the women in the Darth Vader Drag outfits-very spooky, but that’s their choice).

However, I do wonder what goes on in those mosques every Friday…..

I don't dispute that the cops are doing a fantastic job. Look, we don't live in a police state, they can't just search whoever they want, whenever they want. They have to play by the rules we set up and do the best they can.

I just don't think they need to be making it any harder on themselves by drawing attention to what they are doing or giving groups that should be subjected to a higher level of suspicion a club to beat them up with.

For better or worse we live in very touchy times where people would rather ignore real dangers than be seen as insensitive. Better that they don't say anything and just keep working hard.

The mosque has a membership of over two thousand. Juma prayers are held every Friday.
Al Noor Academy began as a high school inside this mosque, before moving out in 2004.
The Mosque has been the target of two minor arson attacks: one in 1990, and another in 2003; Islamophobics have been suspected in the incidents, unsolved to date. However, through donations from the Mosque community, the damaged portions of the mosque have been completely rebuilt.

"Now, there are LOTS of lizardoids FAR better informed then I am on the subject, but for home defense/preparation for shit-hitting-fan scenarios, 12-gauge pump action shotgun is a good starting point. Like this one."

Yes, a 12-guage pump shotgun, with heavier shot, #2's, #4's, as an example, will eliminate an area of about 1-1/2 foot of whatever it hits, out to about 20-25 yards.

If that is too much for you to handle, a "compact" handgun would fit the bill nicely, and stay away from 9mm on down.

A 40 cal, or 44 cal., or even a 45 cal are more suited for home defense.

Sometimes, drug crazed burglars have been able to keep moving, even after being hit up to 6 times with a 9mm.

One slug from a 45cal. even if it is not well placed, which happens many times in the heat of the moment, will generally stop anyone.

I'm in no way an expert, I just have some life experience, and I know, what I know about that.

mason/bricklayer, no gloves, ever!

And yet you still have skin?

The hands get banged up everyday, a gouge here, a cut there, etc, but otherwise, my hands are as smooth as silk.

Concrete, and brick, wear the skin into that condition.

It's too easy to have things slip out of the hands, with gloves on, for me, and there is a necessary amount of "feel" that one needs to be a good mason.

Also, looking down the barrel of a .45 is like looking down the throat of a cannon.

And a .45 hollow point looks like you could mix a cocktail in it.

Very dismaying to your average housebreaking punk.

Red, I can't imagine his own mother admitting that!

"They still go door to door, and they might see him after he wakes at noon, wanders upstairs and asks his Mom to make him a grilled cheese and then drive him to the comic book store.

After some bong-hits, naturally."

LOL!

That is consistant with nearly every leftist kook I have ever encountered.

So true!

ibrodsky,

Are you an apartment or house dweller? One consideration I made was misses (not that I plan on missing). If you miss a perp with a .357, 9mm, .45 etc, that bullet is going through many walls (your neighbor's walls). I got my .38 because I wanted only one gun at home (to start), but that I might also decide to use for carry purposes down the road. The shotgun will stop an intruder, but it doesn't fit so neatly in your pocket. Do your homework, but I also recommend trying out different guns at the range. You can't know what you like until you actually shoot them.

The way that I look at it, is if someone is willing to bust my front door down, they're willing to die, to try and get what they want, which means, they mean business, and in the sometimes split seconds, they don't even notice.

The leftist kooks don't want people like that prosecuted, they want to try and "rehab" them, after giving them "victim" status.

The nice thing about a 45, even many "compacts", is when that 45-cal lead pill hits, it does the job, effectivly.

A hit, in say, the leg, with a 9mm, won't stop many people, but a hit in the same spot, with a 45, will disable them, so you have a bit more time to decide what to do next.

Blue Chip,

If the women wear burkas, you can betcha sweet that what's going on Fridays is not just tea and cookies. I've read (can't remember where) that Al Noor is jihadi territory. Actually all mosques are either jihadi command central or can morph into one overnight.

Don't relocate, get license plate numbers and find out who's there. I'll bet the FBI have some idea.

Why should the FBI investigate Muslim supporters of terrorism in this country? After all, the FBI can be investigating one their favorite targets- Jews:

FBI Questioned Jewish Leaders In Aipac Case

By JOSH GERSTEIN Staff Reporter of the Sun

The New York Sun; Date:2006 May 24; Section:Front Page; Page 1

FBI agents have questioned prominent Jewish leaders about alleged efforts to provide financial help to two former pro-Israel lobbyists under indictment for conspiring to divulge classified information, according to a court filing and sources familiar with the interviews.
Defense attorneys for the two former employees of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, Steven Rosen and Keith Weissman, disclosed the queries about the pair’s finances in a legal motion filed last month under seal and released recently by the federal judge overseeing the case, Thomas Ellis III.
“The topics do not appear to seek information about the charges and are instead focused on trying to find out how the defendants are making a living now and if they have any funds for their defense,” the defense team wrote in a request for copies of the FBI agents’ reports on the interviews.
In recent months, the defense lawyers said, FBI agents questioned “friends, former colleagues, and acquaintances” of Messrs. Rosen and Weissman, who were indicted last summer on charges they passed classified information to reporters and an Israeli diplomat.
A Defense Department analyst also charged in the case,Lawrence Franklin, has pleaded guilty, but the two former lobbyists are fighting the charges and are scheduled to go on trial in Alexandria,Va., in August.
Among those interviewed by the FBI, according to the legal filing, are three former executive directors of Aipac, Thomas Dine, Neal Sher, and Morris Amitay, as well as the national president of the Zionist Organization of America, Morton Klein, and a philanthropist and former accountant friendly with Mr. Rosen, Newton Becker.
Three sources familiar with the interviews told The New York Sun yesterday that the agents asked about claims that some wealthy individuals approached Mr. Klein and suggested they would provide financial support if he hired Mr. Rosen. The attempt to aid Mr. Rosen was first reported last September by a New York newspaper, the Jewish Week.
Mr. Sher confirmed yesterday that he was questioned in February by the FBI and that one issue raised by investigators was how Messrs. Rosen and Weissman have supported themselves since they were fired by Aipac in March 2005. “They did ask about whether these people had other sources of income,” he said.
Mr. Klein confirmed that the FBI sought to question him about the case, but he said he declined. “I told them I respectfully did not want to be interviewed,” he said...

That type of stone, is my all time favorite material for fireplaces!

You can place it, as to make it look like it is just stacked upon each piece, dry, where the mortar is "hiden", or you can do the usual type of placement, with smooth, obvious mortar joints.

You have very good acrchitectural taste, and vision.

Oh, that, and it is durable as all get up!

He answered no when asked whether the FBI is monitoring Irvine’s Muslim community and said, “We would have to have reasonable cause to do that.”

I agree, that I don't believe The Pres. should call islam the (rop).

Yet, I believe a greater problem, is that every leftist, and every leftist politician, and the leftist msm, who gives them unlimited, unchallenged facetime, continually says, in michael moore's words, "there is not terrorist threat, there is no terrorist threat", are the only voices anyone ever hears in the msm.

Until the great majority of decent Americans stand up, and make the REAL voice heard, little will change.

Even if we have another major attack on the USA!

Until the great majority of Ameircans are heard, LOUDLY, little will change.

Good grief. My husband had to undergo this questioning and with even more intrustive questions regarding our church membership history, what Christian organizations he belonged to, and what radio stations he listened to just to serve as a juror in a murder trial. Needless to say, he was rejected after hearing a really bigoted diatribe from the defense lawyer against the hypocrisy of Christians who could support the death penalty in a case where a guy murdered his grandparents to steal their car.

Precisely: The GWB Administration has -- before our very eyes -- virtually morphed into a Bill Clinton Administration Redux.

Bush has lost his way ... The Senate has lost its way . . .

Things are not looking good.

UncleSam #210:

You are hysterical!

I will say that the Muslim student group at my law school was more about improving the image of Muslims in the community and never once sponsored an event about Israel or any hate at all. The one big event they did during my three years of law school was to raise funds for the victims of the Pakistani earthquake. (and brought delicious free food - yum to baklava!)

So not all Muslim groups need to be monitored.

However, clearly the group at UC Irvine, who, in the video showcased, support terror, are potential terrorists themselves. Particularly troubling was the guy who said he derived his strength solely from the afterlife - words Bin Laden could have written himself. To NOT have a group like that under heavy surveillance would be quite remiss of the FBI. At the same time, I read about how the FBI considered a gay "kiss in" a "credible threat," and how they spied on gay student groups!

Am I living in an alternate universe? Why in the hell would they choose to spy on GAY groups, and yet NOT spy on a group that praises terrorism? What the hell has gone wrong with this nation? When did everyone drink the Kool-Aid?

212 tsivya  Wed, Jun 7, 2006 4:00:03am

pffft...

If i planned to continue monitoring them, that's exactly what I'd tell them, too.
