The Meaning of Symbolism
I’m beginning to wonder what’s going on, as Israel hits another abandoned building in another “symbolic” strike: IAF strikes al-Aksa Martyrs’ Brigades’ building.
The Air Force hit a building in Gaza City early Monday. The IDF said that the target was a building used by the al-Aksa Martyrs’ Brigades, a violent offshoot of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement. There was no immediate word of casualties.
A warehouse in northern Gaza used to store weaponry including Kassam rockets was also attacked.
Meanwhile, the Palestinians attempted another deadly serious, non-symbolic strike:
Just a few hours earlier, three Palestinians were shot dead late Sunday night after they opened fire at troops from the Golani Brigade stationed at the Dahaniyeh airport in southern Gaza. Battalion 13 of the Golani Brigade invaded southern Gaza last Wednesday as part of the operation to retrieve Shalit.
Soldiers found explosives belts on two of the attackers.
Colonel Tamir Yida’i, Commander of the Golani Brigade, said that the company commander identified the three suspicious Palestinians approaching the airport. Together with other soldiers, he ran towards them with the element of surprise, shooting and killing him. Only later, he said, did the soldiers understand that three terrorists had been reported to be on their way with an explosive belt.
