Canadian Police “Unconcerned” About Radical Islamic Conference
Canadian police say they’re blissfully unconcerned at a conference sponsored by radical Muslims, taking place in the same town where the Canadian jihadis were arrested for allegedly plotting mass murder: Police unconcerned about Muslim delegates. (Hat tip: WriterMom.)
Peel Regional Police say there is no reason to be concerned as thousands of Muslim delegates from around the world begin arriving in Mississauga for a weekend convention.
The 30th annual Convention of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Canada starts tomorrow and runs through Sunday at the International Centre in Malton.
The convention comes just weeks after six Muslim men from Mississauga were arrested last month in a counter-terrorism sweep that made headlines around trhe world. It is alleged that a plot to blow up government buildings, take hostages and even to kill the Prime Minister was hatched in a storefront Meadowvale mosque.
Meanwhile, a terrorism expert has told a Toronto newspaper that “police will have an interest in who will be participating.” Dave Harris, a former Canadian Security Intelligence Service chief of strategic planning, told The Toronto Sun police should be keenly interested in who will be attending the conference. Topics on the agenda include how Muslims can reconcile faith with loyalty to their country and the consequences of abandoning the principles of Islam.
Peel police are aware of the annual event and senior service members will be attending, said Cont. Craig Platt. But, he added, “We have no concerns.”
The need for such a conference is critical, said Syed Soharwardy, founder of Muslims Against Terrorism and president of the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada.
“Canadian Muslims, especially our youth, are at a crossroads and they desperately need help. If the Muslim leadership in Canada unite and send a single message to all Canadian Muslims, it will help them to unite against anyone who tries to mislead them in the name of Islam,” Soharwardy said.
Syed Soharwardy last appeared at LGF when he demanded that the editors of The Western Standard be arrested for publishing the Danish Mohammed cartoons, and when that failed, sued the magazine in a Canadian “human rights” court.
Nothing to be concerned about, I guess.
UPDATE at 7/6/06 8:37:19 am:
The Toronto Sun has a different take on the story: Toronto And GTA - Muslims watched.
Police will have a keen interest and a watchful eye on who will be attending a Muslim convention this weekend, a terrorism expert says.
The 30th Annual Convention of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Canada will be host to thousands of international Muslim delegates starting tomorrow and running through Sunday at the International Centre in Mississauga.
“Police will have an interest in who will be participating and there may be an issue of protests at the venue,” said Dave Harris, a former Canadian Security Intelligence Service chief of strategic planning and now president of Ottawa-based Insignis Strategic Research, a counter-terrorism and security consulting company.
Topics listed for the convention include reconciling faith with loyalty to one’s country and punishment for the abandonment of faith and principles according to Islam.
“It all seems murky. There are few details on the agenda at this advanced date,” Harris said. “There seems to be confusion on the commitments against terrorism. It’s not altogether encouraging, but one hopes for the best.”
