Still More Photo Staging Identified

Tue, Aug 15, 2006 at 8:42:22 am PDT

Ray Robison has yet another example of staged photojournalism from Lebanon, a car with verses from the Koran strategically placed for propaganda effect: Al-AP at it again with staged photos. Ray comments:

Notice this car has a wall-hanging positioned on the door. An Arabic reader tells me this board has verses from the Koran on it. Because Islam does not allow for images of the Prophet Mohammed, Muslims use verses to adorn their homes the same way some Christians use paintings of Jesus. If you want to make the argument that this wall-hanging got where it is by chance, then feel free, or you can just acknowledge what anybody with two brains cells to rub together can see, the board was placed there for the photo.

Here’s the car before the Koran verses were placed:

A Lebanese civilian stands next to a wrecked car August 8, 2006 as he watches rescue works at the site of yesterday’s Israeli strike on Chiyah, a residential neighbourhood. (Eric Gaillard/Reuters)

And here it is with the scene fully set:

Lebanese men stand as civil defense rescuers, unseen, work to recover the bodies of citizens believed to be trapped under debris and concrete of destroyed buildings, attacked late Monday by Israeli forces, in the southern Beirut suburb of Chiah, Lebanon, Tuesday Aug. 8, 2006. The raid on the Muslim southern suburb next to a Christian neighborhood killed at least 15 people, police officials said. (AP Photo/Lefteris Pitarakis)

UPDATE at 8/15/06 9:43:10 am:

Lefteris Pitarakis, who took the staged photo above, is one of the photographers (along with the discredited Adnan Hajj) rewarded by the Associated Press for his photos from Qana: AP Rewards Qana Photographers.

Um, how does a rather intact car get upside down on top of a pile of debris from a collasped building. No burn marks, fire damge, bullet holes seen. Very odd! Was the car on top of the building?

12 Carridine  Tue, Aug 15, 2006 6:50:47am

You can BET it doesn't quote any of the Quran's prophecies predicting the Coming of the Glory of God!

After all, it was Muslims who put chains and fetters on the Lord of Hosts, and imprisoned Him, hoping He'd die, and when He didn't they exiled Him to Baghdad, then to Constantinople, then to Adrianople and finally to Akka, Haifa, Israel.

And there, on Mount Carmel, He pitched His tent!

The propaganda war is multi-pronged: Put out false images that play to the Euro-appeasement instinct on one hand, and others that inflame Muslims who, if not actually waging war, support the mythical resistance.

I guess war really is (info)hell.

21 Earth2moonbat  Tue, Aug 15, 2006 6:57:20am

Amid all the rubble and debris, I can't see anything else recognizable as from inside of a home there, much less in pristine condition.

This looks like squeeky-clean Mickey Mouse on the pile of ashes.....

Chiya is the town in which photographer Bryan Denton said he saw bodies disinterred for staged photos.

23 stuiec  Tue, Aug 15, 2006 6:58:20am

Funny, in any other part of the world, a photo of people trapped under a car would show nothing but assholes and elbows as every available person at the site tried to help get the victims out. The only asshold I see in this picture is the one holding a megaphone and LEANING ON the car under which the 'victims' are trapped.

24 Occasional Reader  Tue, Aug 15, 2006 7:00:40am

#23 stuiec: Good point. They don't look particularly frantic, do they?

25 Earth2moonbat  Tue, Aug 15, 2006 7:01:32am

And while we're picking this apart, how did the car end up flipped on it's top on top of the rubble? That doesn't look either natural or reasonable. Anyone out there with experience with these things think that looks ok? It looks to me like they got in there with a front-end loader.

The raid on the Muslim southern suburb next to a Christian neighborhood

What was the point of saying that?

Another theory is that the caption writer hoped a sloppy reader would read that the raid was on a Christian neighborhood.

Because they think the readers will assume Israel has quit hitting Hizb'allah areas and it just getting everyone now? Or because they think the Christian readers in Europe and America will get mad at Israel for hitting Christians?

I'm with you, Charles, on bringing scrutiny to bear on the reporting and photography coming out of the Middle East, but I also like to give the benefit of the doubt if there is another possible explanation for something that may seem fishy (I don't know why, since it seems that all too often they don't deserve the benefit of the doubt).

Is it possible that that sign with the verses is kind of like one of those spontaneous shrines of flowers and candles you see spring up on the side of the road where someone died in a car accident? I know that's probably not it, and it's more likely to be more propaganda and sensationalism.

It's conceivable that someone saw it lying on the ground and just wanted to elevate it - much like a pious person might do to a crucifix or a flag on the ground.

I don't know why this wouldn't be true. It's difficult even to see what the object on the car is. If they were staging something for Western eyes, it seems like they'd do a better job of it, i.e., make it something that people could readily see and understand. Also, if it's staged, why is it just sitting there by itself. Why not show someone shocked and sorrowful person placing it there.

As Freud said, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Aside from assumptions, what evidence is there that this object was placed on the car for the benefit of photographers?

you can see it is not on the car but photo chopped in as the fringe on the corner is laying straight as if laid on flat ground when in fact it is hanging half off the car

and I don't personally know anyone who would take a flag laying on the ground and put it on a blown up (hah!) car

How can you even tell if there is fringe on whatever that object is? How can you even tell what it is---with your own eyes, not based on what someone else has told you? And how many blown up cars have you seen?

Looks like they stuck the rug with Islamic prayers on the blown up car for the picture -- and that is most likely not a totally random occurrence.

The idea is to send whatever message it is that they want to send, e.g. the West is trying to destroy Islam, so fellow Muslims, help us in jihad. Or something like that. The photographer may or may not have noticed the people sticking the rug up there, but an editor really should have had a chuckle about the blatant propaganda attempt.

We can speculate on many things in such pictures, but it is quite obvious that the addition of the Islamic prayer item was made for the photo. If it is just to pick it up or to give it respect, it would be odd to then place it on a wrecked and dusty car bound for the scrapyard.

Lefteris Pitarakis

Is Lefteris a nom de plume? Very ominous.

I have the capability to peer a bit into the original image let's just say.

And this car does not look blown up to me

no scorch marks

looks like it was placed there after at some point being dropped from elevation

notice the underside is damaged as if it's been dropped, say at a junkyard
and note the flat spots on the tires

someone else mentioned chain marks on the tires also, not sure I buy that but it is reasonable

Let me guess. Nothing suspicious here, but the WTC towers were taken down by a controlled demolition. Right?

you called it spot-on

we seem to have someone who thinks they can slip in with small snips of moonbattery disguised as thoughtful discourse when I see a foaming, frothing, Bush-deranged Joo-hater

trying to hide and get in small digs under the radar

not gonna work
and good for you calling it more directly than me
