Lovely photo..you can almost see the curve of the earth.

And speaking of planets..

I am bitterly, bitterly disappointed Pluto has lost it's planet status. Can you imagine how it feels to be stuck out in the middle of nowhere just waiting for someone to find you? Then, having been found and enjoying your new found stature by being the little black styrofoam ball on the outer edge of all those grade school solar system models, having the rug pulled out from under you.

Sorry, I just needed to vent.

52 secsailor  Fri, Aug 25, 2006 7:10:41pm

Speaking of brew...

I racked my beer into the secondary fermentor tonight. I’m making a very tasty Blueberry Flavored Stout. It’s a recipe that my dad and I created about ten years ago. Unlike most fruit beers, the blueberry is barely noticeable is really almost just an after-taste. It should be ready to bottle in a few days. If my taste test tonight is any indication, this should be my best batch yet! I can’t wait!

Well it is Friday night. When I still worked for a living Friday night was really important. Now that I don’t, I still like to raise a glass for those who do and keep my Social Security payments coming...Thanks all.

I used to live in NJ. As far as I know it is the only place where one refers to going to the beach as “going down the shore”, so Charles I love the caption.

It is almost September. Here in SC it means hot days, cool nights, morning mist and fog, and beautiful sunsets. So I sit on my patio tonight wishing that all my friends at LGF can be as fortunate as I have been. I have everything I need, and some of what I want. It doesn’t get any better than that, and there’s only one country in this whole wide world in which that could ever happen. How f’n lucky I am.

So thanks for letting this old lady interrupt what just might be the FNDT, and have a nice day.

A little humor for tonite:

How to make love

The Italian man said, "Last week, my wife and I had great sex. I rubbed her body all over with olive oil, we made passionate love, and she screamed for five full minutes at the end."

The Frenchman boasted, "Last week when my wife and I had sex, I rubbed her body all over with butter. We then made passionate love and she screamed for fifteen minutes."

The Jewish man said, "Well, last week my wife and I also had sex. I rubbed her body all over with schmaltz (chicken fat). We made love, and she screamed for over six hours."

The other two were stunned. The amazed Frenchman asked, "What could you have possibly done to make your wife scream for six hours?"

The Jewish man said, "I wiped my hands on the bedspread."

I've been thinking of brewing some at home. I know people that do and they have a great time doing it!

My shop is big enough for the beer, plus I could brew some ethanol for the car and some biodiesel for the pickup...

Ah, TRUE self-sufficiency!

Then, a wind turbine for the house and a solar array for the shop...

Of course, by this time, I'd have spent what 10 years worth of utilities would cost, give or take, but being off-the-grid, brew my own fuel AND my own brew...hmmm! :)

I was reading the blog -IRAQ THE MODEL- and he had this comment-

At that moment I felt the difference and wished I could immediately go back to Baghdad. I know the balance is a tough one but those who seek temporary safety will never get safety.

I read that and thought that this is what a lot of the -get us out of Iraq now crowd - need to hear. That the temporary relief of getting out will not make the US or the world safer in the long term.

FNDT humor:

A tour bus driver is driving with a bus full of seniors down a highway when he is tapped on his shoulder by a little old lady.
She offers him a handful of peanuts, which he gratefully munches up.

After about 15 minutes, she taps him on his shoulder again and she hands him another handful of peanuts. She repeats this gesture about five more times. When she is about to hand him another batch again he asks the little old lady why they don't eat the peanuts themselves.
"We can't chew them because we've no teeth", she replied. The puzzled driver asks, "Why do you buy them then?"
The old lady replied, "We just love the chocolate around them."

It pays to be careful around old people.

I've been thinking of brewing some at home. I know people that do and they have a great time doing it!

It is great fun! And easier than most people think. My dad got me hooked 10 years ago. I come from a long line of homebrewers and bootleggers. My grandfather used to run bootleg whiskey from Kentucky to West Virginia back in the 20's and 30's. I still have (and use!) my grandfathers antique bottle capper. If your really serious about taking up the hobby, stop by your local homebrew supply shop and pick up a book by Charlie Papazian. I think most people would be surprised at the quality of beer that you can make at home.

As much as I hate the man, it was actually Jimmy Carter that legalized homebrewing back in 1979. That started a homebrewing craze that was directly responsible for the rise of micro-breweries and brew pubs in the eighties. America had a great brewing tradition before prohibition. After it was repealed American brewers only made one kind of beer: A light pislner. Now look at the choices you have! All thanks to Jimmy Carter! I think it was the only decent thing the man has ever done.

Anyone around the Detroit area today likely had to deal with the yearly one-day swarm of flying ants. Yup, bigass menacing ants with wings. They come out of the ground and fly all over for one day then they're gone.

#80, x-ray,

You are welcome for the SS payments you earned. Hope it's still there when I'm old:)

Our congresscritters aren’t going to screw around too much in the next 20 years to severely cripple SS. But, put aside some $$$ now while you’re young into 401K’s or IRA’s. SS doesn’t provide everything, as I well know. The pension, the investments and the SS all together are keeping me from having to interview for jobs. Had I not taken advantage of all those options when I was young, I’d be working in Wal-Mart today as an elderly “greeter” or “bagger”. As a single parent I managed to put four children through college with little or no outstanding college loans on a supervisor’s salary (wasn’t as much as the VP earned). But I still made sure something went aside for my old age. Sacrifice some of the creature comforts now to save and plan for your old age and you’ll be fine.

Announcement to anyone who has emailed or will email me:

I will be unable to read or send emails for the next week or so. A tragedy, I know, but it was unavoidable. I still have (literally) over 500 unanswered emails awaiting me as of yesterday; by the time I get access again, there will surely be thousands more. I simply don't know what I'm going to do. I'll appear to be cruel and unresponsive to the hundreds/thousands of people who won't read this announcement. But alas, "technical difficulties" has denied me access to email for now at least. And there is a slim chance (cross your fingers) that I will lose all prior emails and have to start my life from scratch all over again. (Now is the time to pray, even for us infidels.)

but I've been thinking...since the Congressional report came out about all the intelligence agencies ganging up to downplay the Iranian threat.

Is this the next step in the CIA war against President Bush? e.g. if he chooses to confront Iran militarily, will CIA accuse him of exagerating intelligence as they did about Saddam?

Has anyone out there seen any intelligent commentary about the possibility?

Are the Congress people who put out the report trying to anticipate trouble from the treasonous CIA and State Department?

Anybody? Know anything?

Jihadists as Borg Tutorial

Jihadist Islam is a Borg style collective instinctively driven to conquer and assimilate non-Borg infidels.
The primary difference with the Borg would be jihadists' tendency to turn on their own with accusations of apostacy, followed by continued bloodletting.
Once again, jihadists are more evil than civilized minds can conjure - worse than even the Borg.

CIA has a good number of partisans, as does FBI (I personally know one FBI agent who has drank the Daily Kos Kool Aid, and this a long time ago).

Recently, moves have been made that make framing the executive branch rather less-than-productive.

As a matter of fact, they will fire your ass for unhealthy behaviours. And it always seems the trail is so easy to follow.

I recommend professionals in the government do their part to help our country win rather than trying to hand victory or defeat to one party or another.

I lived and served through a few war zones, and even though Clinton was my President for one action (Haiti) I would never sell him out, even if he was not so very good. I still wouldn't sell him out.

I don't know if we're there anymore. I think people will sell out Bush just for the hatred spread by the other side. What they don't realize is a hurt Bush is bad for the economy and everything else.

Otherwise, I don't have two days to go through my box. That's just getting outrageous there.

You don't understand: my emails are coming from all over the world, from people that don't know me personally, and a very large number of them are/might be extremely important in one way or another. Media outlets, reporters, tipsters, underground infiltrators, you name it -- a dizzying cavalcade. Yes, amongst them are trivial/"unimportant" emails, but especially these last three weeks, there are many that make me say, "Oh dear, this is important. I must set aside 15 minutes to deal with this!" Then I open the next email, and it's MORE important. And then the next, and then the next...for hour upon hour, day upon day. Those 500 unanswered emails weren't all just spam or chitchat -- those were the super-important ones that I had set aside because they were so important. I'd already deleted the spams, answered the easy ones.

Included are: Requests for interviews; TV shows wanting permission to use my stuff; people sending me amazing new debunking proofs; offers to make mirrors of my site; some cypto-neocon French woman working for Amnesty International asking for help for her to sneak some anti-idiotarian stuff into their reports; People notifying me that this or this site is ripping me off, or slandering me, or whatever; death threats from ROPers still reeling from the Mohammed Image Archive; and all sorts of people requesting communications on all sorts of topics.

Putting email links at the bottom of my last two reports, combined with being on the boob tube and linked from here to Timbuktu, has caused my email inbox to explode.

And right in the middle of that, "technical difficulties" has denied me access to email!

And life must go on...

182 Uncle Bigbad

and here is the House Intelligence report. link And here is the best paragraph from all of it.. (although I recommend everyone read it. It really is a good primer on the case against Iran)

While not an instance of Iranian perfidy, the spring 2006 decision by IAEA Director General
ElBaradei to remove Mr. Christopher Charlier, the chief IAEA Iran inspector, for allegedly raising concerns about Iranian deception regarding its nuclear program and concluding that the purpose of Iran's nuclear program is to construct weapons, should give U.S. policymakers great pause.

The United States has entrusted the IAEA with providing a truly objective assessment of Iran's nuclear program. IAEA officials should not hesitate to conclude that the purpose of Iranian nuclear program is to produce weapons if that is where the evidence leads. If Mr. Charlier was removed for not adhering to an unstated IAEA policy barring IAEA officials from telling the whole truth about the Iranian nuclear program, the United States and the international community have a serious problem on their hands.

Indeed.

You can't get an answer on who would make the decisions on who is and isn't a muslim either. She probably calls herself a muslim. The imams might call her an apostate, others may call her an apostate, but she calls herself a muslim.

If she checks muslim on a census form, would that be enough of a reason? For some... yes.

Though I have yet to get a clear answer on how exactly you tell the difference.

Don't even start. There was a thread where Ed, I, and others asked her majesty that question, the legal/Constitutional questions concerning mass deportation, and then really started hammering on the logistics of how it would all actually work.

I'm afraid the LGF search function is lacking nowadays or you might be able to search for Killian and logistics and catch the thread.

Denmark: 4 suspects charged with plotting terror attack (with multi-national team) in Europe
[Link: www.usatoday.com...]

A Danish prosecutor on Thursday charged four young Muslims with helping to supply weapons and explosives for a planned terror attack in Europe.
Five other suspects in the case have been charged in Bosnia, including two men accused of preparing to blow up an unidentified European target. Three other suspects have been charged in Britain.
Prosecutor Henning Fode said the four men arrested in Denmark last October helped the two main suspects in Bosnia get hold of "weapons and explosives with the aim of committing a terror act."
All four, who cannot be named under a court order, have denied wrongdoing. Danish investigators have released little information about the suspects, but said two of them are 17, and the others are 20 and 21.
If convicted they could face life in prison, although such sentences are commuted after 16 years under Danish law. A trial date has not yet been set.
The probe stems from the Oct. 19 arrests in Sarajevo of Swedish national Bektasevic, 19, and Abdulkadir Cesur, an 18-year-old Turkish national living in Denmark.
Bosnian prosecutors said Bektasevic and Cesur were planning an attack in Bosnia-Herzegovina or at some other unidentified site in Europe with the aim of forcing the withdrawal of foreign troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Police raiding their Sarajevo apartment allegedly found a suicide bomber belt, explosives, firearms and other military equipment, as well as a videotape showing masked men asking for God's forgiveness.

It has occurred to me lately that I’m getting really fed up with all the Islam-speak that has been thrust upon us. I don’t want to know from jihad, or fatwas, or taqqiya, or infidels, or mujihadin, or Shiites, or Sunnis, or Wahabbis, or Korans, or Hadiths, or Holy Cities, or Holy Months, or Imams, or Mullahs, or Ayatollahs, or Holy Shit. Enough is too much, already. "Declear the Crusade" and let's be done with it.

Hello again Lizards,

I've been lurking for the past few weeks, too busy to comment much.

I start movement home today, my tour in Iraq is finished. It's been an incredible year and LGF has been my constant companion all year long.

It takes a few days to get from here to home, so I should have a little extra time to read up.

First beer in...five days (give or take a day).

Sorry to interupt this non-serious thread

but I've been thinking...since the Congressional report came out about all the intelligence agencies ganging up to downplay the Iranian threat.

Have you seen this post “Fearmongering? Or oversight?” at The Glittering Eye?

That you can truly be

Shining star come into view
Shine is watchful light on you, yeah
Gives you strength to carry on
Make your body big and strong
Future roads for you to pass
Love to watch your mug past

The shining star, lucky you
The sinful redeeming shall be true
On an adventure of the sun, yeah
Yeah its all awake and just begun
Yeah, thought I had to stir the mood
Thats it now I got my own oh yeah

So if you find yourself in need
Why dont you listen to his words of heat
Be a child free of sin
Be some place, yes I can
Words of wisdom: yes I can

Youre a shinig star, no matter who you are
Shining bright to see what you can truly be
Youre a shinig star, no matter who you are

Shining star for you to see, what your life can truly be

Why we split up...

She told me we couldn't afford beer anymore and I'd have to quit.

Then I caught her spending $65.00 on make-up.

And I asked how come I had to give up stuff and not her.

She said she needed the make-up to look pretty for me.

I told her that was what the beer was for.

I don't think she's coming back.

Anywhere, y'all,

With lots of watts he took control,

Historically speaking, 14 was normal for marrying.

That said, we have progressed. Children need education - and that takes time.

14 is a child, mentally if not physically.

Part of our strength is that we nurture our children until they are mature - and for some that takes longer than others.

You did right, 14 is too damned young.

Unfortunately, part of that is that our grade school ed. system has gone to pot. Even a Bachelor's is scarcely better than a H.S. diploma from 50 years ago. There is a reason nature "equips" us to reproduce at such a young age . . . 50 or 55 is too old to be a first-time parent to a teenager . . . we were meant to handle them at 30 or so and after that have older children pitch in with the young'uns. Its a symptom of culture-wide arrested development. Damn, I woudl have loved to be a dad by now, but I guess I'll just hafta wait. . . .

Older parents are better equipped to handle teens, and we live much longer than we did when many of those studies were done. We don't all live on farms anymore!

My Mother had to help with the other kids, she was the oldest of nine. She definitely thinks that older parents can be better.

We have a nut down here; the commy loser candidate, that is going to proclaim himself the "true legitimate President of Mexico" on September 16th (our 4th of July).
The thing is that perhaps one million people are ready to follow him down that path.
Let's see what comes out.
In the mean time, the only legal voice to declare President Elect is the Federal Electoral Tribunal who has an absolute deadline of Sept. 7th to declare a winner. They may even deliver sentence next week; some are saying.

Probably TMI, but 14 is most certainly too low an age of consent, but I can tell you, as a former touring rock musician, that 16 isn't. Seriously, you would not believe how persistent some of the girls that age are. Are you seriously expecting guys to ask for ID? OK, no problem, they have it, and it's fake.

Many stautory rape charges are settups, pure and simple. Or rather, charges motivated by jealousy, which is one of the real secrets kept in these cases: Old farts don't like older guys to have fun with young ladies.

99.9% of all of the world's problems are caused by jealousy. That's why there are two commandments dealing with covetousness.

U.S. may bypass U.N. on Iran: LA Times

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration has indicated it is prepared to form an independent coalition to freeze Iranian assets and restrict trade if the U.N. Security Council fails to penalize Tehran for its nuclear enrichment program, The Los Angeles Times reported on Saturday.

A Security Council resolution gives Iran until August 31 to stop uranium enrichment, which could provide fuel to produce electricity or possibly atomic weapons, or face penalties.

U.S. Ambassador John Bolton said in an interview late this week that the United States planned to introduce a resolution imposing penalties such as a travel ban and asset freeze for key Iranian leaders soon after the August 31 deadline, the Times reported.

It said Bolton seemed optimistic that Security Council members China and Russia, which have been reluctant to impose sanctions, would agree to it once they saw the text. "Everybody's been on board," the Times quoted him as saying.

But on Friday Russia rejected for now efforts to impose sanctions after Tehran agreed to continue talks, but refused to halt enrichment.

In case Russia and China do not accept the resolution, Washington is working a parallel diplomatic track outside the United Nations, Bolton said.

Yeah, but without China and Russia on board, Iran's two bigest economic clients, economic sanctions will mean nothing.

I can't believe they both weigh the risk calculus and choose trade over a nuclear armed Iran.

Two French soldiers killed in Afghan ambush

KABUL (Reuters) - Two French soldiers have been killed in an ambush in Afghanistan, the French Defense Ministry said on Saturday, the latest casualties in the bloodiest period of Afghan violence since the Taliban were overthrown.

A ministry official said the soldiers were on patrol with special forces when a bomb exploded and "extremists" opened fire with light weapons. The ambush took place 38 km (24 miles) from Mihtarlam, capital of the eastern province of Laghman.

The U.S.-led coalition initially said the two were killed on Saturday, but a force spokesman later said it had happened on Friday.

Two other French soldiers from the force were wounded. They were in stable condition.

They've been doing that every week for at least the last 3 years. No news there. Kos is predicting victory across the board. Which is perhaps the best news the Republican party could receive, given Kos' abysmal track record.

But meanwhile, I've had essentially snacks for dinner the last three nights. Tonight I am going to eat dinner. And I'm going to do so kinda early. Last night's rains scraped most of the crap out of the air, and dropped the temps by a few degrees. It's also less humid this evening. So I'm going to go stuff my face at the hotel's weekend BBQ outside. My farewells to those who depart in my absence, and be back in a bit to the remainder.

Actually the Daily Kos Blogola scandal hit AFTER their Daily Kos convention. What happened is that there was a lot of criticism of Kos for talking up Mark Warner while partaking of the goodies that Warner provided at the Stratosphere party in Vegas including free booze, sushi, and a chocolate fountain. That is what set off the look into the connection between Daily Kos endorsements and/or favorable coverage and "consulting fees" paid to Kos's partner, Unknown Jerome Armstrong. In the case of the Ohio Senate race, there were particularly HILARIOUS results when Kos had to backtrack on his endorsement of Hackett and quickly come out for Brown when the latter paid for some Armstrong "consulting fees."

524 pjcomix  Sat, Aug 26, 2006 1:35:19am

Joe Lieberman's big mistake was not shelling out $$$ to Unknown Jerome Armstrong for "consulting fees." If he had done this, he might not have received the outright endorsement of Kos but at least it would have inspired Kos enough not to push hard for Lamont. What is the real difference between Lieberman and Warner? They are very close on the issues, including about Iraq. The big difference is that Warner threw some bucks in the direction of the Kossacks.

Here's Diana Ross and the Supremes...

I need love, love
To ease my mind
I need to find, find someone to call mine
But mama said

You can't hurry love
No, you just have to wait
She said love don't come easy
It's a game of give and take

You can't hurry love
No, you just have to wait
You got to trust, give it time
No matter how long it takes

But how many heartaches
Must I stand before I find a love
To let me live again
Right now the only thing
That keeps me hangin' on
When I feel my strength, yeah
It's almost gone
I remember mama said:

You can't hurry love
No, you just have to wait
She said love don't come easy
It's a game of give and take

How long must I wait
How much more can I take
Before loneliness will cause my heart
Heart to break?

No I can't bear to live my life alone
I grow impatient for a love to call my own
But when I feel that I, I can't go on
These precious words keeps me hangin' on
I remember mama said:

You can't hurry love
No, you just have to wait
She said love don't come easy
It's a game of give and take

You can't hurry love
No, you just have to wait
She said trust, give it time
No matter how long it takes

Gotta wait!

No, love, love, don't come easy
But I keep on waiting
Anticipating for that soft voice
To talk to me at night
For some tender arms
To hold me tight
I keep waiting
I keep on waiting
But it ain't easy
It ain't easy
But mama said:

You can't hurry love
No, you just have to wait
She said to trust, give it time
No matter how long it takes

You can't hurry love
No, you just have to wait
She said love don't come easy
It's a game of give and take

Well yeah, I asked earlier, about a minimum fuss/ingredient recipe for grilled pork chops, from, arguably, a master chef, recipes at the ready, but, alas, they're still in the freezer.

If you're buying American breed pork that is not a heritage breed brine it first - the exception being tenderloin.

The first time I saw Kos (on CNN, IIRC) I literally recoiled from the TV. The 'ewww' factor on that guy is off the charts.

But no, he's not gay - married with at least one child.

My first album was Steppenwolf Gold.

Get your motor running
Head out on the highway
Lookin' for adventure
In whatever comes our way

Yeah, darlin', gonna make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once and
Explode into space

I like smoke and lightning
Heavy metal thunder
Racin' with the wind
And the feeling that I'm under

Yeah, darlin', gonna make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once and
Explode into space

Like a true nature's child
We were born, born to be wild
We can climb so high
I never want to die
Born to be wild
Born to be wild

Get your motor running
Head out on the highway
Lookin' for adventure
In whatever comes our way

Yeah, darlin', gonna make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once and
Explode into space

Like a true nature's child
We were born, born to be wild
We can climb so high
I never want to die
Born to be wild
Born to be wild

/

I like to dream
Right between the sound machine
On a cloud of sound I drift in the night
Goes far, flies near, to the stars away from here

Any place it goes is right
You don't know what we can see
Well, you don't know what we can find
Why don't you come with me little girl on a magic carpet ride?
Why don't you tell your dreams to me?, fantasy will set you free.
Last night I held Aladdin's lamp, and so I wished that I could stay.
Before the thing could answer me well someone came and took the lamp away

I looked around, a lousy candle was all I found.

Well, you don't know what we can find
Why don't you come with me little girl on a magic carpet ride?
Why don't you tell your dreams to me? fantasy will set you free.

Close your eyes girl, look inside girl, let the Sound take you away.
Well, you don't know what we can see
You don't know what we can find

Well, you don't know what we can find
Why don't you come with me little girl on a magic carpet ride?
Why don't you come with me little girl on a magic carpet ride?

Star Warrior

...What about defenses against short- or medium-range missiles? "We can defend against that sort of threat with some of the programs we have today," Gen. Obering says. He mentions the ship-based Aegis system, which Japan is buying for protection against North Korean missiles, and the Patriot PAC-3 antimissile system, which was used in the Iraq war. "So we have the assets, but"--here comes the catch--"we don't have enough of them yet and we don't have them deployed" to protect the homeland.

Gen. Obering mentions other systems that are in the works: the airborne laser, designed to shoot down missiles while they are still in the boost phase (that is, when that the warhead is more likely fall back to Earth on the enemy), and Thaad--an acronym for Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, which had a successful test last month. Thaad's missile and its manufacturing production line were redesigned a few years ago with the help of Nascar, which brought its "modular mentality" to the job, the general says. "They can change a tire in less than a couple of seconds, they can fuel in less than a couple of seconds, they can replace body parts just like this." (These words are uttered with a bracing snap of the general's fingers.)

The overall objective of the missile-defense system is to provide a "layered" defense, another of Gen. Obering's favorite words. "Now what do I mean by that? When a missile goes through flight, it goes through basically those three phases. There's a boost phase--a power phase--then it coasts during the mid-course phase and then it comes into a terminal phase, which is usually re-entry into the atmosphere for most of the missiles that we're talking about. What you want to do is build defenses in each one of those phases in an integrated, layered fashion.

"You also want to tie together as many of your sensors as you can. You want to tie together your space-based sensors with your ground-based radars [and] with your ship-based sensors and radars because it gives you a much better picture of what we call a birth-to-death tracking of the target. Well, the ABM Treaty would not allow us to do that. We could not mix what were considered to be regional, theater missile defense assets such as an Aegis ship or a Patriot system . . . with the ground-based mid-course system."

The general is referring to the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty under which the U.S. and the Soviet Union agreed not to defend their countries against missile attack. The U.S. withdrew from the treaty in June 2002. "Coming out of the treaty has allowed us to take full advantage of this integration between assets," Gen. Obering says.

What's next? "In my mind, space-based interceptors [are] very attractive," he says. To those who say that would mean the "weaponization" of space, the general has a ready answer. "We already do intercepts in space, because that's where the missiles fly . . . What we're talking about is having space-based interceptors that would engage from space." Congress has authorized funding for some space experiments starting next year. ...

Rebel group funded congressman's trip to Sri Lanka, sources say

By Andrew Zajac and Mike Dorning
Chicago Tribune
(MCT)

WASHINGTON - Illinois congressman Danny Davis and an aide took a trip to Sri Lanka last year that was paid for by the Tamil Tigers, a group that the U.S. government has designated as a terrorist organization for its use of suicide bombers and child soldiers, law enforcement sources said.

Davis' seven-day trip came under new scrutiny this week following the arrests of 11 supporters of the organization on charges of participating in a broad conspiracy to support the terrorist group through money laundering, arms procurement and bribery of U.S. officials.

The five-term Democratic congressman said he was unaware that the Tigers paid for the trip and on his required congressional disclosure form he reported that the trip was paid for by a Hickory Hills, Ill.-based Tamil cultural organization, the Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America.

During the visit, Davis spent most of his time in a region controlled by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, as the group is formally known, and visited the organization's political headquarters. He also met with a police chief for the region appointed by the Tigers.

The Tamil Tigers is a separatist group that has been fighting since 1983 for an independent state for 3.2 million ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka, a tear-shaped island nation of 20 million off the southern tip of India. In addition to conventional guerrilla tactics, the group has used terrorist methods, including 200 suicide bombings, in a bloody conflict that has claimed more than 60,000 lives. Though the violence between the government and the separatist group abated during the past several years, it recently surged again, threatening a renewed civil war.

Hitchens Gives the Finger to Maher's Audience for 'Frivolous' Jeering of Bush

Writer/author Christopher Hitchens on Friday night gave the finger to the Los Angeles audience of HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher. As he laid out the case for how it's Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who wants World War Three, not George W. Bush, Hitchens cited how Ahmadinejad “says the Messiah is about to come back.” Maher quipped: "So does George Bush, by the way.” That caused a loud eruption of audience applause and cheering, which led Maher to clarify: “That's not facetious.” The crowd continued to applaud as Hitchens remarked, about those in attendance who had earlier cheered and laughed as Maher called Bush an “idiot” repeatedly: "That's not facetious. Your audience, which will clap at apparently anything, is frivolous.” Loud oohs and groans emanated from the audience, prompting Hitchens to give them the finger as he castigated them, “Fuck you, fuck you,” while the groans continued. (Transcript follows)...

Last October my daughter got married on the lakefront. She originally planned for a harp but the sound was too weak given the outdoor conditions. So she had a string quartet instead. She walked down the aisle to Ravel's Bolero and walked back up afterwards to Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart. It was beautiful.

The 80's were the darkest decade of rock music. All those talent-less hair-metal bands playing their brain-dead music and dressing like horror movie transvestites. And the equally horrible bubble-gum bands with singers from the USA who tried their very best to sound British. And the punk rockers who made a bunch of noise and broke shit but never did much musically. It was the MTV decade and it was bad.

So how bout some Audioslave on a Saturday morning? Nice.

The Coming Muslim Majority

On February 28, Russia expert PAUL GOBLE, vice dean of social sciences and humanities at Concordia-Audentes University in Tallinn, Estonia, gave a briefing at RFE/RL's Washington office. Goble said ethographers predict Russia will have a Muslim majority "within our lifetime."

...

Russia is now home to about 20 million Muslims, and some researchers believe the "revolutionary factor of Islam" will play a decisive role in Russia's evolution toward democracy.

Mikhail Delyagin, director of the Institute of Globalization and a former adviser to Russian prime ministers Mikhail Kasyanov and Yevgeny Primakov, wrote in his best-selling book "Russia After Putin" that fundamentalist Islam will seriously challenge Russia's ruling political class and bureaucracy in the future.

Four charged with plot had met radical cleric
Ex-official: Men charged in Denmark were under surveillance for two years after a London meeting.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark - Four young Muslims charged with supplying explosives for a planned attack in Europe were under surveillance by authorities for two years after they met with a radical Islamist leader in London, Denmark's former intelligence chief said yesterday.

The four, ages 17 to 21, were charged in Copenhagen on Thursday in connection with a Bosnian terrorism investigation that has also yielded arrests in Britain. Bosnian investigators said the network planned to blow up a target in a European country to force the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan and Iraq.

The four men have denied any wrongdoing. Their lawyers have said they will plead not guilty.

"We became aware of the group two years ago, when its members traveled to London to meet a Muslim cleric known for his radical views," Joergen Bonnichsen said in an interview. Bonnichsen retired from the Danish intelligence service in June.

He said the cleric was Omar Bakri Mohammed, the leader of the now-disbanded radical Islamist group al-Muhajiroun, which gained notoriety for praising the Sept. 11 hijackers. Bakri, who now lives in Lebanon, is banned from returning to Britain, where he lived for 20 years. ...

Iran launches new nuclear project

ARAK, Iran (Reuters) - Iran's president launched a new phase in the Arak heavy-water reactor project on Saturday, saying Tehran would not give up its right to nuclear technology despite Western fears it aims to make atomic bombs.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was speaking just days before an August 31 deadline set by the U.N. Security Council for Iran to halt uranium enrichment -- the West's biggest worry in Iran's atomic program -- or face possible sanctions.

"No one can deprive a nation of its rights based on its capabilities," Ahmadinejad said in his speech to inaugurate the heavy water project.

The Arak project, once complete, will produce plutonium as a by-product that could be used to make atomic warheads. But the reactor that will produce this is still being built.

Western nations accuse Iran of seeking to master technology to produce nuclear weapons. Iran, the world's fourth largest oil exporter, insists it only wants to produce electricity.

"Iran is not a threat to anybody, not even to the Zionist regime," Ahmadinejad said, using Iran's term for its arch-enemy Israel, which the Islamic Republic does not recognize.

Although Iran faces possible sanctions if it does not heed the U.N. deadline, divisions among world powers over how to handle the Islamic republic could delay any action.

The Los Angeles Times reported Washington had indicated it was ready to form an independent coalition to freeze Iranian assets and restrict trade if necessary. Analysts say sanctions imposed by just a few states would have limited impact.

Israel Seeks Troops From Muslim Nations
JERUSALEM - Israel said Saturday it was encouraging some Muslim countries to send peacekeepers to southern Lebanon, a contribution that would lend credibility to the heavily European force.

EU nations pledged 6,900 troops Friday, dispelling concerns that the peacekeeping force might not materialize because of reluctance to send troops without clear instructions or authorization to use their weapons.

But the force was still far short of the 15,000 troops envisioned under a resolution that stopped a month of fighting between Israel and the Islamic Hezbollah guerrillas.

The EU and U.N. agree the peacekeeping mission must have a strong Muslim component to give it credibility. Israel, however, objects to nations that do not recognize the Jewish state, saying such troops would make it impossible for Jerusalem to share intelligence with the U.N. force. That would exclude Indonesia, Bangladesh and Malaysia, which have offered troops.

But Israel said it has been in touch with other Muslim countries to encourage them to participate, particularly Turkey, which has diplomatic relations with Israel.

"If Turkey decides to send a contingent, we would welcome that," said Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev.

Update on one of yesterday's security alerts...
FBI: Dynamite found in luggage
Pennsylvania student not involved in terrorism, U.S. officials say
"It has not been tested, but it's believed to be a half-stick of dynamite," Dunlap said of the item in Fish's luggage.

Reports indicate that he had bomb-making components in his luggage.

In Buenos Aires, Marcelo Sain, head of Argentina's Airport Security Police, told local television that authorities found "a Coca-Cola bottle with mud, and inside it was a tube with ammonium nitrate, a little bit of dynamite and a detonator," according to Reuters.

In Houston, KTRK-13 quoted law enforcement sources as saying that the man had a blasting cap, a homemade fuse and a quarter-pound of ammonium nitrate, in addition to the dynamite.

Mark Mancuso, spokesman for the Houston Airport System, said he could not confirm the allegations but that "some additional items of contraband may have been found."

What the hell was he doing with this stuff in his luggage?

Oh, yes. That.
I still don't quite get...That.

National Geographic specials commemorate Sept. 11

...* At 4 p.m. Sunday, it airs an updated version of "Inside 9/11." Drawing from a wide range of sources and incorporating new details that have come to light since it first aired a year ago, the four-hour program traces a timeline that began years ago and, on that fateful day, becomes a moment-to-moment analysis.

* At 6 and 9 p.m. Monday, "Triple Cross: Bin Laden's Spy in America" tells the tale of Ali A. Mohamed, a radical ex-Egyptian Army sergeant who survived inside the United States as a mole for Egyptian Islamic Jihad and al-Qaida.

The son of a professional soldier, he worked for the CIA, the FBI and the U.S. Army, while "triple-crossing" U.S. officials: training terrorists here and abroad, establishing terror cells in the U.S. and conspiring to kill Americans throughout the world.

How did he continue this ruse for more than 14 years? Based in part on the upcoming book, "Triple Cross" by Peter Lance, the two-hour film reveals how one man exploited pre-9/11 bureaucratic gaps in the U.S. intelligence community to al-Qaida's benefit.

* At 7 and 10 p.m. Tuesday, "The Final Report: Osama's Escape" asks: How did the world's most wanted man walk away from the battle at Tora Bora and disappear? And why does he remain at large today?

This one-hour special inquires into bin Laden's whereabouts during the battle, what the U.S. has been doing to track him down since, and what the future may hold for this country if he continues to evade capture. ...

Protocols of DKos...
Israel: Time For Soul-Searching

EXTREME GENEROSITY

In order for the Palestinian people to `let go' of all the bitterness and resentment they feel now ... need to end up with a settlement that is so incredibly generous, and so filled with face-saving Israeli [and American] concessions, they won't be able to contain their joy at their good fortune. They need to feel as though they have won a great victory and their Muslim sympathizers around the world need to see that the Palestinians are delighted with their good fortune.
...
AN APOLOGY

It was good old Harry S. Truman who first got us involved in the Arab-Israeli dispute and it was his decision in 1948 that put us on the side of the Israelis. At the time, the American people were feeling a lot of sympathy for the Jewish people after the horrors of the Holocaust were revealed, so it was easy for them to consent to a plan to `give them a homeland' where they would be free of persecution.

Unfortunately, everyone in the press conveniently ignored the fact that the land the U.N. decided to give to the Jews happened to belong to someone else.

Dangerously stupid and just plain sick.

Yes, once again the Kossaks prove they make perfect useful idiots and breathtaking appeasers. Let's give the radical Palestinian death cultists a big bag o goodies so they will love us!

breathtaking naiveté.

Here is what the Kos Kidz want to appease and reward:

Pierre Rehov describes his experiences of interviewing the families of deceased [Palestinian] bombers as 'terrifying,' and likened it to interviewing people in an insane asylum who are comfortable with their insanity:

"I came to the conclusion that we are facing a neurosis at the level of an
entire civilization. ...
"It was a fascinating and a terrifying experience. You are dealing with
seemingly normal people with very nice manners who have their own logic, which
to a certain extent can make sense since they are so convinced that what they
say is true. It is like dealing with pure craziness, like interviewing people in
an asylum, since what they say, is for them, the absolute truth. I hear a mother
saying, "Thank God, my son is dead." Her son had become a shaheed, a martyr,
which for her was a greater source of pride than if he had became an engineer, a
doctor or a winner of the Nobel Prize.

This system of values works completely backwards since their interpretation of Islam worships death much more than life. You are facing people whose only dream, only achievement goal is to fulfill what they believe to be their destiny, namely to be a Shaheed or the family of a shaheed.

They don't see the innocent being killed, they only see the impure that they have to destroy."

You also forgot factually wrong. Extreme generosity was attempted at Camp David in 2000 and not only did Arafat and the Palestinians not even dignify the Barak concessions with a counteroffer, but they immediately launched into yet another Intifada figuring that they could wring ever more concessions by fighting.

Every concession given by Israel, whether withdrawal from South Lebanon or unilateral withdrawal from Gaza is not seen as a gesture of peace and conciliation but as weakness and a sign that future fighting will eventually cause Israel's annihilation.

NYTimes
Iran Opens Plant That Can Produce Plutonium

...On Friday, a mid-level cleric, Ahmad Khatami, said during a Friday prayer ceremony that the West ought to be cautious in the way it addressed Iran.

"You can not use the language of force against this nation," Mr. Khatami, in a speech broadcast around the nation from central Tehran. "Do not test us as you have tested us before."

As is customary, Mr. Khatami stood with his right hand gripping the barrel of an automatic weapon as he addressed thousands of people gathered for the weekly prayer ceremony. "You can not deal with a nation as great as the Iranian nation this way. It is a very stupid approach. Russia and China, we count on you to be careful not to fall into the trap American has set for you."

For Iran, the issue of its nuclear program is as much about domestic politics as it is about international relations.

President Ahmadinejad was elected last year on a populist economic message, promising a redistribution of the nation's vast oil wealth and immediate economic improvements. Instead, while the economy remains gridlocked, inflation and unemployment high, Mr. Ahmadinejad has turned the nuclear issue into his raison d'etre. Focusing on national pride, the president and Ayatollah Khamenei have succeeded in winning public support for the nuclear program.

While the depth of that support could be tested by sanctions, the president continue to appeal to pride as he opened the new heavy-water plant in Arak, south of Tehran.

"Having nuclear technology and using it is a blessing and is the right of all nations, including Iran," President Ahmadinejad said in Arak. "As the people's representative, I pursue whatever people want. Today they want to have nuclear technology and I pursue this demand and will not back down."

Former Snohomish County, Wash., Democrat party official Mike Whitney says:

Are FOX employee’s innocent bystanders or an integral part of the American war machine? That may turn out to be an important question now that 2 FOX workers have been captured by a group of Palestinian militants.

If FOX is an essential part of the state propaganda-system which facilitates the war, then how can we absolve their employees from accountability? Doesn’t that make them legitimate targets for resistance organizations?

As long as Muslims are deprived of their rights and freedom, we can expect more random incidents of kidnapping and cruelty. These are the unavoidable consequences of injustice.

The Holy Jihad Brigades is the natural offspring of Bush’s "New Middle East", a hotbed of animosity and violence. America has radicalized the region and is fueling the rage and bloodshed. The chickens will continue to come home to roost until America withdraws from Iraq, stops its blind support of Israel, and negotiates a comprehensive settlement to the Palestinian issue.

Gee a Jew-hating blame America first Democrat, how very strange.

Joke my grandmother sent me
An older gentleman had an appointment to see the urologist who shared
an office with several other doctors.

The waiting room was filled with patients. As he approached the
receptionist desk he noticed that the receptionist was a large
unfriendly woman who looked like a Sumo wrestler. He gave her his name.

In a very loud voice, the receptionist said, "YES, I HAVE YOUR NAME
HERE; YOU WANT TO SEE THE DOCTOR ABOUT IMPOTENCE, RIGHT?"

All the patients in the waiting room snapped their heads around to
look at the very embarrassed man. He recovered quickly, and in an equally
loud voice replied,

"NO, I'VE COME TO INQUIRE ABOUT A SEX CHANGE OPERATION, BUT I DON'T
WANT THE SAME DOCTOR THAT DID YOURS."

719 neverquit  Sat, Aug 26, 2006 6:18:35am

This is a good article -

Hezbollah's Sudetenland

The Peace Deal: The U.N. has legitimized Hezbollah's false sovereignty claim over Shabaa farms, long used to attack
Israel. Presumably, Hezbollah will have no more territorial demands. Where have we heard this before?
U.N. Resolution 1701, which supersedes seven other failed U.N. resolutions regarding Israel and Lebanon since 1978, fails to mention
Iran or
Syria, without whose money and weapons Hezbollah could not exist, much less wage war.

But it does mention Shebaa farms, a 16-square-mile area stuck between Israel, Lebanon and Syria. The farms were seized by Israel from Syria during the Six-Day War in 1967 and annexed in 1981.

Lebanon's claim to the area comes from a single 1966 map. After Israel withdrew from Lebanon in 2000, U.N. cartographers ruled that Shebaa farms fell within Syrian territory seized by Israel and that Resolution 425, which called for total Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, had been completely implemented.

So if the U.N. has already ruled that Shebaa farms, which the Israelis call Mount Dov, was Syrian, and not Lebanese territory, why does U.N. Res. 1701 grant Hezbollah a huge political victory by saying its claim of sovereignty is back on the negotiating table?

Hezbollah has said that it will never disarm or cease attacking Israel as long as any Lebanese territory is occupied by Israel. It considers the Shebaa farms Lebanese territory. So it is the pretext for not obeying any U.N. resolution, past, present, or future. This smacks of appeasement.

Pushing this ceding of Israeli territory to Hezbollah is U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Malloch Brown, who has never dodged a Katyusha, and who claims that while Hezbollah has committed terrorist acts, it is not a terrorist organization. Of the current conflict he says: "It's not helpful to couch this war in the language of international terrorism." Really.

Right, leftout. Even with regard to modern times, I'm always amazed at the ignorance of the Israel-haters who always bring up the "stolen Palestinian land" canard. Land in pre-State Israel was bought by Jews in areas that were uninhabited or uninhabitable. For more, read this, especially the section "Jews stole Arab land".
