The Times says four simultaneous explosions, which obviously indicates an Islamist operation: 10 Britons hurt in Turkish resort bomb attacks.

AT LEAST ten Britons were injured in the early hours of this morning in four explosions in Turkey.

Three blasts rocked the popular holiday resort of Marmaris in the south of the country, while one bomb exploded on a bus in Istanbul.

Witnesses in Marmaris, where the Britons were injured, claimed that a bus was torn apart by one bomb while another was reported to have exploded in the harbour area of the town at about 1am local time.

Turkish television said that at least 22 were injured during the four blasts. According to reports the bomb in Istanbul had been left near a school in the Bagcilar district of the city at about 9.30pm local time. At least six people were hurt.

Of the ten Britons known to be injured in Marmaris who were taken to hospital, four are in a serious condition, according to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

A spokeswoman for Thomas Cook said that five of the injured were its customers.

One witness, Danielle Pearson, said that the streets of the resort had been thronged with people. She said: “We heard one of the bombs and it sounded just like a gunshot. The bus had exploded outside a McDonald’s restaurant. We saw its remains: it had been ripped apart.

“Ambulances and police cars were going everywhere. The streets were really busy with people running everywhere. Before the explosions people were being typical holidaymakers and just enjoying themselves.”

UPDATE at 8/27/06 6:33:09 pm:

A reader emails from Turkey:

I live in Turkey, and I have access to some news - someone who lives in the vicinity claims that there were 5 different blasts, not 4. Four people are dead, 1 of them a British woman. However, some news agencies are saying that there were 3 blasts, and they occurred with 45 minutes in between. 21 are hurt, 10 Britons and 11 Turks. The names of the Britons, according to this news source, are ”Alex Bedford, Master Louis and Suzanne Becford, Janet Hughes, Kevin and Jenifer Smith, Master Adam Pond, Katherin Urry, Mart Stringer, Dorothy Huger”.

UPDATE at 8/27/06 6:44:16 pm:

Can’t help noticing the media’s incredibly blasé reaction to what appears to be a very significant terror attack, especially after the rash of false alarms recently. Not one television news station in Los Angeles has reported this. It isn’t even on Drudge Report yet.
