Petition to Support Shutting Down Free Speech
The fascists who stormed the stage and shut down a speech by Minuteman founder Jim Gilchrist at Columbia University have set up a petition to support their thuggish actions, describing the near-riot as a “courageous stand:” Statement of support for the Columbia University students who protested Jim Gilchrist Petition. (Hat tip: Terp Mole.)
To: The Columbia University administration and President Lee Bollinger
On October 4, the College Republicans at Columbia University hosted Minuteman Project founder Jim Gilchrist. The Minutemen are known for inciting racist violence against immigrants. In an exercise of free speech, students unfurled a banner on the stage reading “No One is Illegal”, prompting audience members to join them on the stage with another banner with the message, “No to Racism”. These peaceful protesters were violently assaulted. We fully support these students’ courageous stand against racism and violence and demand that no reprisals are taken against them.
I love the smell of petitionsonline in the morning.
UPDATE at 10/11/06 10:03:05 am:
Here’s a counter-petition: Request for disciplinary action against the Columbia University students who assaulted Jim Gilchrist.
