5th district race heats up with war of words. (Hat tip: Catttt.)

More campaign turmoil in the race to represent Minnesota’s 5th district. Alan Fine and Keith Ellison exchanging words again, after a new allegation surfaced Saturday. The war of words involves a campaign stop made by DFL candidate Ellison.

You’ll recall, that if elected, Keith Ellison would become the first black muslim in Congress. This latest controversy stems out of an Ellison fund-raiser in Florida.

The republican candidate Alan Fine says the event was hosted by a group with ties to terrorism. GOP candidate Fine issued another statement attacking Ellison. “I think the voters in the 5th district have a right to know who the candidates are. And you have the right to know who their affiliations and associations are,” Fine said.

Fine accuses Ellison of associating with the Council for American-Islamic Relations. CAIR is one of the nation’s most prominent muslim groups. But, various organizations claim CAIR has ties to terrorism.

“This is just more misleading, hateful rhetoric from Mr. Fine that sadly we’ve become accustomed to in this campaign,” Bridget Cusick said, Ellison’s communication director. Cusick says, “Mr. Ellison is not affiliated with CAIR in any way.” But she admits that CAIR officials in Florida did attend Saturday’s fund-raiser.

“Why are the high ranking officials of CAIR providing funding to Keith Ellison’s campaign?” Fine said.
