Rangel: “So-Called Terrorists”
Charlie Rangel, the man who could be the next chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, refers to Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, as a “so-called terrorist.” He tries to backpedal when O’Reilly calls him on it, of course, but there it is on video.
UPDATE at 10/18/06 10:05:47 am:
What happened here is that Rangel got caught out by his own attempts to obfuscate the issue. Throughout the interview, he didn’t respond directly to a single question Bill O’Reilly asked. And when O’Reilly asked Rangel how he would get KSM to reveal information without using coercive techniques, Rangel tried to continue his tactic of non-response by immediately shifting the discussion away from KSM—and this led to his outrageous conflation of “so-called terrorists” with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.
O’REILLY: How do you think you’re going to get Khalid Sheikh Mohammed to tell you about his al Qaeda associates without coerced interrogation? How would you get him to tell you?
RANGEL: You said that these terrorists, these so-called terrorists that…
O’REILLY: So-called?
RANGEL: We don’t know who they are.
O’REILLY: Khalid Sheikh Mohammed?
RANGEL: How are you going to find out - no, I’m not talking about him. I’m talking about.
O’REILLY: Well, that’s who we’re talking about here.
