One Israeli soldier was lightly wounded when the unnamed woman died after blowing herself up alongside troops in the northern Gaza town of Beit Hanun — the focus of Israel’s six-day-old operation — an army spokeswoman said.
“A woman came close to our forces and she was carrying an explosive device and she blew herself up,” the spokeswoman said.
In a phone call to a Gaza radio station close to Islamic Jihad, which has been behind all of the most recent bomb attacks against Israeli targets, a caller claimed the attack on behalf of the ultra-radical group.
He said the woman approached Israeli troops before setting off her device. Witnesses said the woman activated the explosives when soldiers entered her house to conduct a search. The army said the attack occurred on the street.
