Got a Big Fish in Somalia?
It’s unconfirmed as of this writing, but we may have gotten a very big fish in Somalia: Al-Qaida chief in Somalia may be dead.
MOGADISHU, Somalia - A senior al-Qaida suspect wanted for bombing American embassies in East Africa was killed in a U.S. airstrike, a Somali official said Wednesday, a report that if confirmed would mean the end of an eight-year hunt for a top target of Washington’s war on terrorism.
In Washington, U.S. government officials said they had no reason to believe that the suspect, Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, had been killed. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the information’s sensitivity. The report came as U.S forces apparently launched a third day of airstrikes in southern Somalia. At least four separate strikes were reported around Ras Kamboni, on the Somali coast near the Kenyan border. Witnesses said an AC-130 gunship attacked a suspected al-Qaida training camp.
The terror-supporting Arab League is seething: US attack in Somalia killed innocents-Arab League.
In Cairo, the Arab League’s Assistant Secretary-General Ahmed Ben Hilli said: “We demand that these strikes which now target civilians and led to the killing of many innocent victims be stopped.”
“There was no U.N. Security Council authorisation for the U.S. forces to hit Somali areas,” he told reporters.
Ben Hilli also criticised the interim Somali government for backing the air strikes. “We’d hoped they’d care about for the sovereignty of their country … instead of calling for foreign intervention,” he said.
Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf has said the air strikes were justified because they targeted al Qaeda militants.
In late December, the Arab League called for the withdrawal of all foreign forces in Somalia after Ethiopian troops ousted Islamist forces that ruled the capital Mogadishu and large parts of southern Somalia.
