 RetweetDoes This Burqa Make Me Look Fat?

Thu, Jan 11, 2007 at 10:49:43 am PST

In New Zealand, another Islamic demand that the West accommodate misogynistic practices, accompanied by a claim of victimhood: Muslim women seek their own swimming pools. (Hat tip: warbicycle.)

There are calls for special pool facilities to be set up for Muslim women so they can swim without compromising their religious beliefs.

Naaz Shah of Christchurch said many Muslim women had no opportunities to exercise and were putting on weight as a result, the Press newspaper reported today.

“They become medically unfit. Their health is affected and they’re quite depressed,” she said.

Entrepreneurs, sensing opportunity, have moved quickly to fill the demand for oppressive women’s swimming garb:

An Australian designer, Aheda Zanetti, has been swamped with worldwide interest in a modest bathing costume designed for Muslim women.

The burqini covers everything except hands and feet, and includes a hijood, named after the traditional Muslim hijab to cover the head.

Behold: the burqini. (Hat tip: Killgore Trout.)

More Winter Weather than I know what to do with watch. My icy cup runneth over!

Besides possible weekend ice storm North Texas (DFW? Not sure yet) and Oklahoma, we have near blizzard conditions possible early week in Chicago, and right on the razor's edge for monster snow in BOS per Canadian early next week.

GFS keeps storm a little further South and weaker, initially, so not as big a deal in Chicago, but again, BOS on the screaming edge of the rain snow line.

-23ºC with 40 knot winds in Winnipeg!

Now, I'm no statistics guy, and I have no idea what a standard deviation means in actual degrees Farenheit above or below normal from climatology, but every GFS ensemble member predicts greater than 1 SD below normal in 850 temps Tuesday afternoon, and that with cross polar airmasses, the surface temps are often actually cooler than the temps at about 1500 meters, well, I'm impress!

BTW- Mike C- 85% or more of the ensemble members at a week are greater than 2 SD below normal, centered near El Paso, TX, but a similar number are greater than 2 SD above normal just North of the Mongolian border in the once and future Soviet Union.

I suppose if the muslim community wants muslimae to have their own private swimming facilities then it is perfectly permissable most places to build one as a private sports facility.

Now if they want the PUBLIC to pay for it, then that is a different thing entirely... no $ for religious entities.

Never heard of jogging?...or sit-ups?

In related news: female Muslim lifegaurds at Austrailian beaches will be wearing "burqinis" when saving lives.

It is a full-length lycra suit which is loose enough to preserve Muslim women’s modesty but light enough to enable them to swim and rescue flailing bathers from treacherous rips and undertows. It even comes with a built-in hijab, or head scarf, and will soon be produced in the distinctive red and yellow of the surf life saving movement.

“Normally I’d wear cotton trousers and a top but they get very heavy in the water. This meets our cultural requirements,” the 20-year-old student said as she patrolled the white sands of Cronulla.

The group’s trainer, Tony Coffey, 49, said the burqini made swimming more difficult compared with being dressed in a bikini or swimsuit.

“It’s the biggest hurdle they face. But we can’t do anything about it, it’s part of the deal. They just need more intensive training.”

(I posted this the other day but it fits this thread)

Like I said, I could probably suggest some answers to the riddle, but the feminists here would probably want to chop my testicles off.

I don't know. Some schools of feminist thought insist that the societal pressure to maintain a Playboy-centerfold body is just another way women are suppressed by the establishment. The emphasis on looking like a pre-pubescent boy with big boobs, and the unnatural things women do to their bodies to look that way, are more constricting as the Victorian corset or the ancient Chinese foot-binding.

I can seriously see the relief a woman who has wasted her productive years trying to conform to the Western standards of feminine beauty can feel by donning the burqa. She'll be respected AND she doesn't have to do extra sit-ups, while a woman who gives up the self-torture for baggy jeans and sweatshirts is routinely mocked and belittled.

Well, but Christian or Jewish women don't have to convert to marry a Muslim, whereas Christian or Jewish men do. Shouldn't that actually make the number of male converts higher? I don't think that explanation is very good.

Just a partial defense of us hetero guys; you've got us (generally) on the big boobs preference, but relatively few men prefer wafer-thin "pre-pubescent boy" bodies, like those of high fashion models. Muslim women also don't get enough sun.

That part is actually true:

Although a few minutes of exposure to sunlight every day should take care of the problem, 90 % of the women still suffer from a lack of vitamin D. What does that indicate about how much these women are cut off from society?

Me, I'm Mr. Eclectic. A woman like Ms. Cucinotta will certainly cause me to, um, notice her (and indeed, she bears quite a close resemblance to my gf [breathing contented "life is good" sigh yet again]), but can also appreciate a long n' lean look as well.

But that's not what we're here to talk about.

I really, truly would have no problem with the "burquini", if it weren't for all the cultural baggage that comes along with it. This isn't just like seeing Amish women in their traditional garb and thinking, "well, not my bag, but whatever works for you"; it's a symptom of something much more troubling.

Fast-food giants cater to Muslims

By Noreen S. Ahmed-Ullah
Tribune staff reporter
Published January 4, 2007

First, the new owner of a nearby Kentucky Fried Chicken began trying to lure shoppers in the heart of South Asian Devon Avenue. Then a Brown's Chicken and Pasta popped up a few blocks away.

It seemed a strange juxtaposition--all-American fast food, elbow-to-elbow with pungent cuisine from the other side of the globe.

But the secret ingredient both outlets offered was halal, the Islamic analog of kosher, a promise that the meat has been slaughtered and prepared in accordance with Islamic teachings.

Zulubaby, ok:

Western Feminism and the Need for Submission

Writer Lars Hedegaard in Denmark does not buy into the theory that women approve of Muslim immigration out of irrational naivety or ideological conviction. He thinks they simply want it, as he writes in a column entitled “The dream of submission.” He does notice, as I do, that women are more likely than men to support parties that are open for more Muslim immigration.

Why is this, considering that there is hardly a single Muslim majority area in the world where women enjoy the same rights as men? And Hedegaard asks a provocative question: Are women more stupid and less enlightened than men, since they in such great numbers are paving the way for their own submission? He comes up with an equally provocative answer: “When women are paving the way for sharia, this is presumably because women want sharia.” They don’t want freedom because they feel attracted to subservience and subjugation.

The English author Fay Weldon has noted that “For women, there is something sexually very alluring about submission.” And as Hedegaard dryly notes, if submission is what many women seek, the feminized Danish men are boring compared to desert sheikhs who won’t allow you to go outside without permission. Muslims like to point out that there are more women than men in the West who convert to Islam, and this is in fact partly true. Islam means “submission.” Is there something about submission that is more appealing to some women than it is to most men? Do women yield more easily to power?

134 mommydoc  Thu, Jan 11, 2007 9:34:38am

They want to use their own money to build their separate facilities, as some posters have suggested? Fine. There are plenty of JCCs as models, although the JCC is often so awesome that non-Jews join (unlikely they will let kuffirs in.) Some entrepreneur sees a market? I'm all about free market economy, as long as it doesn't discriminate against any luny kuffir who wants to play by shariah rules.

But spend a penny of public money for this? No way. Talk about your camel's nose: they have already admitted that a female lifeguard's swimming ability is hampered by a burquini. I believe that the drowning victim's safety should outweigh the muslimah's sensitivities. She can find another job if a mainstream bathing suit is a problem to her. Don't put swimmers at risk, especially given that she's already tipped her non-altruistic hand.

And, once this becomes accepted, how long do you think it will be before they start demanding of the IOC [spit] that all women Olympians must don the burquini in order to level the playing field? You know damned well the IOC of Munich [in]fam[y] would only too happily comply.

I read about this a couple of weeks back, about the same time the British papers were reporting anger from Christian parents of children whose school had been serving up undisclosed halal to everyone for a number of years.

I don't pay much attention to Paul, but as I recall his New Testament statement releasing Christians from Old Testament dietary restrictions covers everything except blood and meat sacrificed to other gods. Seems to me that since allah is absolutely not the same as G_d, that halal should be absolutely forbidden to Christians. No Kentucky Fried for me...

This has already happened in parts of the UK, where some local councils have instituted Muslim-only swimming hours:

But the nearby Croydon Mosque has defended the introduction of Muslim-only swimming sessions at the council pool.

A spokesman said: "Muslims are not allowed to show intimate parts of their body. This is non-negotiable. Muslims have as much right to go swimming as anyone else."

A spokesman for Croydon Council said: "We are keen to ensure sporting facilities in the borough are accessible to the whole community. "We appreciate that certain religious groups, such as Muslims, have strict rules on segregation for activities including sports, so in response to requests from the local community, we have been running these sessions at Thornton Heath Leisure Centre for the past year, with a women-only session on Saturday evening and a male-only session on Sunday evening. These have been successful and well attended.

"Croydon is not unique in offering such sessions to minority communities, many local authorities do the same. We are not giving preference to any one group but simply taking practical steps to create access to all."

[Link: www.dailymail.co.uk...]

Once again we see the same pattern of behaviour from Muslims all over the world. A slow push for special treatment, all the while disguised as a call for equal treatment, until Muslims are established as a superior, a privileged, group. This has already happened in parts of the UK, where some local councils have instituted Muslim-only swimming hours:

Muslim only? That's different than having one night a week reserved for men/women only.

I'm sure they have test drove the biquini but how do they keep the cloth from clinging when wet? How do they keep the him of the top from floating up? What would happen if you jumped in the pool and it forced the top up?

I wonder when we get to reinstate the 'whites' and 'coloreds' drinking fountains and restrooms again?

The burqini covers everything except hands and feet, and includes a hijood, named after the traditional Muslim hijab to cover the head.

~~~
This is definitely a sick world. Have they designed a baby burqini the baby slips can slip into immediately as it comes out of the mother's vagina? We wouldn't want any male doctor's oggling a female muslim newborn, it might offend Allah.
SICK MFers!
Please, don't call anyone "cockroach" not even members of the ROP -- The Rwandan Hutu extremists called Tutsis "cockroaches" as they were exterminating them.
The nazi pigs called Jews "vermin", another word to avoid.
We're in the facing reality business, not the extermination business, although I admit that a nuclear Iran will probably give us no rational choice.
Of course it has to do with power. It has to do with warped ideas of sexuality and control, that Muslims are unwilling to face. Like the 9/11 highjackers who drank themselves silly watching strippers before their 'glorious' act to Allah. Like having relations with young boys-whether they want it or not. And, like considering non-Muslim women "meat" ready for attack (see Malmo, etc..) and like splicing women's genitals (see Islamic world). Never mind the idea of the raisins waiting for them if they kill enough Jooos and Infidels.
It's all STAN's work.
Grammatical errors aside, that is very good news. But wait,
The Taliban rejected the NATO report as "baseless and false" and said no fighters had been killed. "Only civilians were targeted," a Taliban spokesman, Mohammad Hanif, said by telephone.
Why of course, civilians, in a convoy of donkeys carrying weapons & ammunition across a mountain pass from Pakistan in January. And kittens, too. Or maybe it was a wedding party.
Chyron (#186)
I wonder when we get to reinstate the 'whites' and 'coloreds' drinking fountains and restrooms again?
Exactly. There is a world of difference between "freedom to" and "freedom from." Freedom to wear whatever asinine garb you want in the water, as long as it doesn't endanger someone else, is fine. Freedom from having to share the water with men or non-co-religionists is not fine. When does the muslimah "lifeguard" decide to let a man drown because she cannot touch him or let him touch her during a rescue?
Once again, we wonder where the feminists are now. If it was not okay to exclude women from all aspects of public life (voting, police force, fire department, military...) it is not okay to exclude men, or non-muslims, or non-little-brown people from any aspect of public life. Of course, this flies in the face of the entire [il]liberal agenda.
I know some men (maybe sexist), that would pay good money to force some Western women to wear outfits like that at public places.
Nothing quite as emetic as seeing a 300lb. woman in a bikini or a thong with layers of fat hiding other layers of fat.
If the women of Mo really do want to stay in shape, let the Infidel men treat them like "ladies", as in the rare art of chivalry.
In short: Islam means submission, and submission is simply sexually and mentally more attractive to women than it is to men. Western women spend their days trying to castrate their own men, and end up with someone they don't sexually desire. Feminism is rubbish, and is one of the primary causes of Western weakness.
It's not just men/women only, though. It's men/women wearing Islamic-approved swimming costumes only. human beings who have allowed their humanity to become so debased they worship death and shun love. And our society can become like theirs. That is the true horror.
He seems like a decent guy and he's been on record a number of times saying that he likes America (it was a headline on the BBC) and supports what it stands for. This drew ire from many in Euroland. The only way to exercise is to swim? /scratches head Putting on weight just may have to do with how many babies they pop out and their oppressive way of life.
Philosophical considerations aside, there's also a practical side to that. Animals just want food, and can be controlled when you make food easier to get elsewhere. Jihadis, OTOH, are obsessed. That makes them infinitely more dangerous. There's no animal in the entire animal kingdom that's quite as impervious to reason as an obsessed human. Or more dangerous.
Yes, of course jihadists are human. Deplorable in their actions and outlook, yes, but human.
Please bear in mind that some of them will eventually renounce jihad, and when they do, it will because they will be reopening their human hearts, that have been in denial so long, about the love of life.
Thoreau's quote seems apt here:
But just in proportion as I regard this as not wholly a brute force, but partly a human force, and consider that I have relations to those millions as to so many millions of men, and not of mere brute or inanimate things, I see that appeal is possible, first and instantaneously, from them to the Maker of them, and, secondly, from them to themselves. [My italics]
We will want to celebrate their humanity with them when they renounce jihad, just as we celebrate with the likes of brave men like Walid Shoebat. My 2 cts
#243 Fjordman,
I submit that I think you're onto something :) however, I do think conversion to Islam is more about sadomasochism than anything else - furthermore, I consider sadomasochism to be a perversion of wholesome feminine sexual surrender. BTW, I think feminism is a particularly humorless dead end -feminism has a harsh bark, signifying nothing.
&
elric, Here's my take, for what its worth: I abhor the totalitarian regime Islam. I fully detest any and all destructive actions performed by the inmates of Islam. Nevertheless (and simultaneously), Muslims are human and humans have souls. Therefore, innately, Muslims are worthwhile as human beings. Please, be kind enough to think it over.
347 Kenneth  Thu, Jan 11, 2007 10:40:37am
Bill Roggio has a great essay on the state of Iraq. Plenty of good insight and observations wyou won;t find anywhere in the msm.
American troops watch the news and follow the debate in real time. They will tell you the war they see on television isn't the war they are fighting. To the troops, the war as portrayed on television is oversimplified and digested into sound bites. The soldiers are portrayed as victims and the violence is grossly exaggerated. From my own experiences with two months in Iraq out of a year, I had not personally witnessed an ambush, a roadside bombing or other attack. The closest action I saw were some poorly aimed mortar attacks in Fallujah, or a near by patrol getting hit (the bullets and RPGs never made contact). And this is in Anbar province, the most dangerous region in Iraq. I make it a point to accompany the troops on foot and mounted patrols on daily basis. This is not to say attacks do not occur on a daily basis in Anbar – they do,and Anbar is a dangerous place, but just not to every soldier at every minute on every day in every city and town.
The nature of the insurgency in Iraq is complex, and cannot be simply framed as a sectarian war or a war against "U.S. occupation." The insurgency is designed to destroy any semblance of a democratically elected Iraqi government, and is directed at the developing Iraqi security forces, the Iraqi government and institutions, U.S. and Coalition forces, and against sectarian targets.
The real secret about Iraq is the nature of the conflict you will encounter really depends on where you are geographically. In the regions where Sunni, Shia and other ethnic groups live together, such as Baghdad and the surrounding areas, the violence is largely sectarian in nature. Al-Qaeda in Iraq, Ansar al-Sunnah, along with some other Sunni insurgent groups purposefully attack Shia civilians to stir the sectarian violence and foment a civil war. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the deceased leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, admitted a civil war was his goal in a letter to Osama bin Laden in late 2003. Muqtada al-Sadr's radical Shia Mahdi Army roams Sunni neighborhoods in and around Baghdad to execute Sunnis and incite Sunni reprisals, helping to stoke the fires of a Sunni-Shia war.
In the Shia dominated south, a power struggle is occurring between rival political organizations for control over government institutions and oil revenue. North of Baghdad, Ansar al-Sunnah, a violent terrorist organization that espouses the beliefs of Osama bin Laden, along with the Islamic Army in Iraq focus their attacks largely on U.S. forces and the Iraqi government.
Ginn
We met at nine (We met at eight!)
I was on time (No, you were late.)
Ah yes! I remember it well...
We dined with friends (We dined alone!)
A tenor sang (A baritone.)
Ah yes! I remember it well...
That dazzling April moon (There was none that night,
And the month was June...)
That's right! That's right!
(It warms my heart to know that you
remember still, the way you do...)
Ah yes! I remember it well.
How often I've thought of that Friday (Monday!) night
When we had our last rendezvous,
And somehow I've foolishly wondered
If you might by some chance be thinking of it too?
That carriage ride (You walked me home.)
You lost a glove (I lost a comb.)
Ah yes! I remember it well!
That brilliant sky (We had some rain!)
Those Russian songs (From sunny Spain!)
Ah yes! I remember it well.
You wore a gown of gold (I was all in blue...)
Am I getting old?
(Oh no! Not you!
How strong you were, how young and gay
A prince of love in every way...)
Ah yes! I remember it well.
I have often found this song genuinely moving.
Huffington Post, hits bottom, keeps digging, and then drills down even further.
Predict the Number of Troops Killed in the Next Year!
How many U.S. troops will be killed in Iraq in the next year?
Submit your best estimate here.
The Bush administration won't dare go public with such hard and somber calculations about expected casualties--which would help weigh the costs of this renewed war effort. So I figure conscientious HuffPo readers will step into that breach.
I'll keep track--our memories are long--and we'll notify the "winner" one year from today.
I'm not sure, however, what you'll win, or even if you could call it a victory. But Americans like to play to win, we've been told. And it doesn't take much of a sacrifice to ponder the possibility of someone else's death.
After all, why should the White House chickenhawks be the only party that gets to war-game with U.S. troops as their pawns? You can do it, too. The only difference is that you won't be calling the real shots and spilling the real blood. Sort of like playing Monopoly with fake money.
Simply disgusting.
Somalia leader: No role for Islamists
Negotiations with Islamists 'will not happen,'
Somalia's interim president said in rebuffing a U.S. policy request.
BY SHASHANK BENGALI
McClatchy News Service
NAIROBI, Kenya - In a rebuff to the United States, Somalia's interim president, Abdullahi Yusuf, on Monday rejected U.S. requests to bring moderate Islamists into his weak transitional government.
Negotiations with Islamists ''will not happen,'' he told Al Jazeera television before flying to Mogadishu, Somalia's lawless seaside capital. ``We will crack down on the terrorists in any place around the nation.''
This swimming pool issue is just step one in the dhimmitude of this city. Gain sympathy for the poor islamic women, get the council to submit, have some islamic men run for council, and so the process starts.
This is nothing to do with exercise, everything to do with using the democratic right given freely to them, against us.
The way you hold your knife
Participants in a new study, all more than 70 years old, were tested up to four times between 1993 and 2000 on their ability to recall 10 common words read aloud to them. Those with more education were found to have a steeper decline over the years in their ability to remember the list, according to a new study detailed in the current issue of the journal Research on Aging.
Y'all come on down for Madri Gras now ya hear.
In a black-majority city where most murder victims have been black, the crowd was predominantly white.
"It's not about white. It's not about black. I think now people are realizing that because everybody's blood is red," said Keqante Brown, 30, a black woman who said five family members have been murdered in the last 12 years.
On Wednesday, Gov. Kathleen Blanco endorsed a plan announced earlier this week to increase patrols and use checkpoints to crack down on criminals. State police and the National Guard have been supplementing city officers since June.
Sounds like a quagmire to me. Mayor Nagin needs to redeploy. When will Gov Blank - o admit her policies aren't working? Why do they insist on staying the course?
Here are some words to the wise
Study: Higher Education Rots Your Brain
Participants in a new study, all more than 70 years old, were tested up to four times between 1993 and 2000 on their ability to recall 10 common words read aloud to them. Those with more education were found to have a steeper decline over the years in their ability to remember the list, according to a new study detailed in the current issue of the journal Research on Aging.
Noam Chomsky is sooo screwed.
That headline is so much bullshit. The uneducated would have nowhere down to go, while the educated would have nowhere to go but down.
It's like saying that people who do a job requiring extreme physical labor start doing worse with old age than a person who could never do the job to begin with. It's because the second person never had the initial ability from which to get worse!
I can totally understand the desire for modesty, but I believe islamists have an unnatural fear of their own bodies and of their own sexual responses.
The burquini is an extreme idea and Wicked Weasel is the opposite end of the spectrum, with their suits (?) designed for women to induce a sexual response. Not exactly what I want my daughters to be wearing at the pool or beach - nor myself for that matter (not that I would look that good in one of those tiny things). In our area we deal with teenaged girls dressing intentionally seductively like poptarts and one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in our state. There needs to be a balance! I'm no prude, but some modesty for dealing with everyday life is not a bad thing.
I can see how people who do not get degrees in those fields would see no need to take such classes. It'd also be unfair, I would think, to make them attain the equivalent of a minor in those fields. I was already angry enough with the amount of Gen. Ed. being thrown at me as it was, without having to worry about those.
The bottom line is: For those classes, making them mandatory will not 'enlighten' people. The people who care would be the people who already would have taken it, and the people who don't care will memorize what they need and forget it, as if they had never taken it.
It just wastes time and money for everyone.
2. It's not the kids that make you fat; it's what you eat. (25-30 lb. normal weight gain during pregnancy; most of it gone during/just post-birth)
This isn't true statement to be made so blanketly unless you have lived my life and some of the people I've known. Some of it has to do with genes. My great grandmother, my grandmother, my mother and Myself all gained nearly the EXACT same weight and it was no 25 to 30 pounds! More like double. I lost maybe 20 pounds of it easily after the birth and still am working on my 40 almost 2 years later. I ate very healthy PER my ob/gyn's instructions.
Many people who have wonderful genes that make them all fit into this perfect little box of what the medical community says we should gain or lose when in our lives really chaps me because they don't live my life. I'm not lazy and I eat decent stuff: no breads, no pasta, rarely starches, raw veggies, fruits and I cook my own wholesome meals.
We had to take something called "University 101: Freshman Seminar" in order to get my physics degree here at good ol' WKU. It was basically a class on how to take notes, schedule your time properly, and how to socialize. I hear some people's professors made them attend sporting events as part of the grade, but my professor was fully clued in on how idiotic that would be. I was actually in that class when 9/11 happened (guess it's one of those things you remember).
Highrise (#536) It's not what we in the medical community say you "should gain or lose." It's what is demonstrated, statistically, to lead to lower morbidity and mortality. Genes are what God or nature deals you; the rest of it is what you choose. Again, the constraints of your lifestyle are a combination of luck and choice, just like being 5'5" takes a lot of extra work (and talent) to make it in the NBA.
I've gotten a little tired of my patients who whine about how they "eat almost nothing" while carrying their Big Gulp cup of non-diet soda, their two year olds are eating McDonald's french fries or Cheetos, and they haven't done any aerobic exercise in 15 years.
At 5'3", with a family legacy on my mother's side of morbid obesity, I lost 40 lbs by working out and eating right. It wasn't easy, given my schedule of call, but I own every ounce that I had gained by being sedentary (running around the hospital doesn't count as exercise, no matter how much I'd like to will it to be so) and eating every piece of junk the nurses had out.
We don't tell you what you have to do, and we don't do it because we want to control you or frustrate you. We tell you what you have to do to live longer, healthier lives. The rest is up to you. But don't lay it at the door of the medical profession, any more than it's our fault that obese Latinas get complications from type II diabetes because they refuse to follow an ADA diet or exercise.
The real point is that not everything's useful. That's why they require distribution. If they didn't require this useless crap, nobody would take it.
The concepts of "free" and "market" are beyond the academic culture.
I know. I got to experience the wonders of the free market when they raised tuition every year to pay to rip up the few commuter parking spots that I needed to get to classes in order to plant grass, thereby requiring me to pay $60 a year for a parking pass that allowed me to park in spaces that no longer existed.
Highrise (#536) It's not what we in the medical community say you "should gain or lose." It's what is demonstrated, statistically, to lead to lower morbidity and mortality. Genes are what God or nature deals you; the rest of it is what you choose.
Much of your post had zero to do with my original post, but ok. I was MERELY correcting the one poster that made a blanket statement that was clearly untrue to my experience and my lineage as well as my experience in dealing with others who have struggled in their weight loss. Not all of them have big gulps in their hands and are lazy fat slobs. My great grandparents, grandparents and even my parents never had the money to buy junk. Until one walks in my shoes, if they don't want to look stupid to some of us, they best talk about them and their experience and not make it so blanket that it speaks for us all.
My comment about the medical community is because in the post I directed my comment to..it is LARGELY touted that one only should gain that amount..which in my experience was not correct. Now unless you are going to call me a liar about my experience, it's best we agree right now to disagree.
As for statistics, I don't think it's a secret that statistics don't give the entire picture and they usually leave some room for either error or differences which making a blanket statement such as the one that was said needed to be corrected by someone who knows differently, which is me.
Maybe you have an axe to grind, however, I don't. I just like reminding people that what is true for them, just MAY not be true for EVERYONE.
566 mommydoc  Thu, Jan 11, 2007 2:14:50pm
Highrise: I'm not sure what you're getting at. What I hear is something along the lines of "because of my genes, I should gain or lose a different amount of weight than someone else of my height." Which is not quite the same as being within a healthy weight range. Whatever. Bottom line is that BMI and percentage of body fat are, for most people, fairly reliable indicators. And a BMI of 20 to 24.9 gives one a pretty reasonable range of appropriate weight.
Please don't bring the exceptions of elite athletes and extremely tall/short people into this. And no reasonable person would argue that statistics perdict perfectly for each individual. Everyone can pull an Uncle Joe out of their ass who smoked 3 packs a day for 50 years and hasn't gotten lung cancer. So what.
If you're not fat, then let it go. If you are fat, I have 6 words for you: Aerobic exercise. Portion control. Balanced diet.
Everyone has excuses for why they're overweight. Just as with other issues in society, less and less frequently are most people willing to take personal responsibility for having gotten there, regardless of the hurdles, such as genetics, that may make it harder to keep weight off.
Ultimately, the overweight person suffers the most in terms of morbidity and mortality. Although the rest of us end up sharing the financial burden.
Oh, and 60 pounds is way too much to gain during pregnancy. You may have been eating wonderfully healthy food. Just too much of it for the caloric output you were achieving. It's fairly simple math: For every 3500 calories you consume in excess of what you burn, you gain a pound. A fetus at birth weighs less than 10 pounds (7.5 average.) Amniotic fluid about 2 pounds. Placenta about 1.5 pounds. Uterus about 2 pounds. Breasts about a pound. Blood about 3 pounds. Water retention about 4 pounds. Physiologic fat about 8 pounds.
That puts you about 30 pounds, or 105,000 calories, or about 375 calories a day over the limit. Genes or not, that should have been controllable. If you have a genetic predisposition to gaining weight more easily, you eat fewer calories or exercise more. 375 calories is not that hard to avoid or burn off.
Italian MP receives death threats from Muslims.
Rome, 10 Jan. (AKI) - Italian conservative MP Daniela Santanche [pictured] has received death threats over her opposition to the Muslim veil, Italy's leading paper Corriere della Sera reported in a front-page article on Wednesday. Santanche reportedly received a letter in Arabic and English at her lower house office Tuesday night with pictures of Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, murdered in 2004 by an Islamist fundamentalist for his movie Submission, which denounced violence on women in Muslim countries, and Dutch MP Hirsi Ali, the film's author, who has also received death threats.
Forget what the Muslim women wear, it's what they don't wear that concerns me. Muslims are out breeding the West by five to one. So what do you think the major Islamic hobby is? Watching TV? Reading the Qur'an? I don't think so, that would take precious time away from the breeding.
It really is difficult to explain why more women than men convert to Islam, which is actually true. I can come up with some politically incorrect answers, but maybe I'll refrain from stating them.
I'm not disagreeing with your "Western Feminism and the Need for Submission" (#133) comments since I have not read a lot on that topic. Although, I do see and read about Western women converting to Islam because they believe they will find enlightenment and equality with their partner. Just google 'gender equality in Islam'.
This, in my opinion, is one of the major contributing factors.
Here is a link that came from one of Robert Spencer's books.
US Latinas seek answers in Islam
UNION CITY, N.J. – Jasmine Pinet sits on the steps outside a mosque here, tucking in strands of her burgundy hair beneath a white head scarf, and explaining why she, a young Latina, feels that she has found greater respect as a woman by converting to Islam.
"They're not gonna say, 'Hey mami, how are you?' " Ms. Pinet says of Muslim men. "Usually they say, 'Hello, sister.' And they don't look at you like a sex object."
Apparently there is safety in the Muslim "garb."
Now, I not not saying that I agree with the statements of equality, but that is how many Western converts feel. I've listened/read about Nonie Darwish, Brigitte Gabriel, Wafa Sultan, Parvin Darabi and a few others. They all seem to have to same message. That, if women want equality then Islam isn't the answer. I agree.
Fjordman (#133)
I'm too afraid to answer your questions here. LOL!
As I said, I'm not a feminist -- read into that what you will.
I grew up in South Africa which was (and probably still is) a chauvinistic, male-dominated environment. I'm very comfortable in that environment. Of course, to confuse everything, I'm very strong-willed myself and don't enjoy being told what to do, but at the same time, I like being with men who are ... men.
I could have this discussion for hours really. It's definitely not a straight line.
595 Fed Up Patriot  Fri, Jan 12, 2007 5:49:11am
'“They become medically unfit. Their health is affected and they’re quite depressed,” she said.'
Do you think it might not be the weight gain that's making them depressed, but more like the constant beatings, having to wear bed sheets from head to toe, and knowing that when you die you're going to be some insane fucks sex slave.
596 mommydoc  Fri, Jan 12, 2007 5:53:19am
Webler (#593) and others: There's one more piece. Muslim men can marry kufir women; the women must convert. Muslim women are not allowed to marry kufir men.
In addition to what has also been discussed, this probably has a big hand in the disparity. Also, with all the black, Latina and Indo-asian women converting, I have to wonder about whether it's just exchanging one culture in which women are 2nd class citizens for another, which, on the surface, gives lip service to respecting women. The mainstream caucasian women? Most of them seem to do it in the context of marriage. And many of them ultimately live to regret the decision.
And, zulubaby (hi!), I am a feminist, in the true sense, that I believe in equality of gender. If it weren't for feminism, we wouldn't have the vote, and I wouldn't be able to do what I do for a living. That being said, it's not about whether I can open my own door, or about women first. I believe we are equal but definitely different.
But I still like my men to be men. As you know, I am also independent and strong-willed. And I need a man who will stand up to me and therefore still allow me to be feminine.
Despite what the feminazis have shown us, one can be a feminist and still be feminine and enjoy men.
Not to mention the men who are also feminists.
597 zulubaby  Fri, Jan 12, 2007 6:05:44am
Hi mommydoc! I hope all is well with you :-)
When I first moved to New York, I went out with a guy who asked me if it was okay if he held the door for me. I thought he was kidding. He wasn't. I knew we were not of the same essence.
I think it is the feminazis, as you so appropriately call them, that get me. I fully believe that women are as capable as men in every area -- it's not about that -- but at home, I like things more old-fashioned. I know a LOT of people disagree with me on this, but it is what works for me.
598 mommydoc  Fri, Jan 12, 2007 7:21:10am
Hi, zulubaby! All is relatively well; I'm about to leave home for another assignment :-(, but the BF is on the mend after his second hernia surgery this week and the replacement cat is turning out to be pretty sweet.
I agree with you; women and men take care of each other in different, but equal ways.
I wonder, though, if that guy and you were really all that different. Clearly, he wanted to hold the door for you, so he knew the right way to treat a real woman, who has nothing to prove. (We both know that we are capable of opening our own doors if we have to.) He also was concerned enough about how you'd feel about him not to want to offend you. But, living in New York, I am sure that he had encountered enough feminazis to want to avoid risking the potential confrontation should you have had those proclivities.
Human relationships are so hard.
599 zulubaby  Fri, Jan 12, 2007 8:11:54am
mommydoc, sounds busy! I'm sorry the bf had to have surgery, but glad he's on the mend. I wish him well. And good luck on your assignment!
All true. The part that bothered me was that he was asking for my permission instead of owning the confidence to do as he saw fit. I actually felt a little sorry for the guy because he'd obviously been bashed around. You're right too, about relationships being hard! LOL. Who knows really? It's all a big muddle. However, when it's right, it's all very comfortable and comforting, isn't it? :-)
