 RetweetPalestinian Cease Fire Watch

Mon, Jan 29, 2007 at 7:58:00 pm PST

Apparently, we’re not supposed to laugh: Hamas, Fatah declare new cease-fire.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Warring Hamas and Fatah factions in the Gaza Strip declared a cease-fire early Tuesday in an effort to end factional fighting that has left more than 60 Palestinians dead in the past two months.

The cease-fire was agreed at a midnight meeting between Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas and a representative of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of the rival Fatah. Foreign Minister Mahmoud Zahar of Hamas said it would go into effect at 3 a.m. local time.

Zahar spoke after the meeting, flanked by Hamas and Fatah representatives and by Egyptian mediators. As he spoke, gunfire and explosions could still be heard in Gaza City.

Gunfire and explosions were audible in downtown Gaza City as gunmen from the rival factions ignored the cease-fire, reached at a midnight meeting between Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas and a representative of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah.

No, no, no! Those were the sounds of them celebrating the ceasefire!

11 cicero05  Mon, Jan 29, 2007 6:06:55pm

This is really tough. The fence keeps them from killing Israelis, and now the "ceasefire" will keep them from killing each other.

Birds gotta fly, fish gotta swim, arab muslims gotta KILLL SOMEONE!

Something's gonna give.

The two radical groups that claimed to have sent the bomber said they were trying to end Palestinian infighting by taking aim at Israel instead.

Hamas and Fatah?

"Just like the Americans."

"Yankee doodle."

"Please send us more money."

It's almost as funny as HugoMania.

Now, he's about to become even more powerful — the all-Chavista National Assembly is poised to approve a "mother law" as early as Wednesday enabling him to remake society by presidential decree. In its latest draft, the law would allow Chavez to dictate measures for 18 months in 11 broad areas, from the "economic and social sphere" to the "transformation of state institutions."

Chavez calls it a new era of "maximum revolution," setting the tone for months of upheaval as he plans to nationalize companies, impose new taxes on the rich and reorient schools to teach socialist values. With near-religious fervor and plenty of oil wealth, Chavez is mobilizing millions of Venezuelans, intent on creating a more egalitarian society.

Gotta have the cease fire so the two sides can brace for the inevitable Israeli retaliation.

Has Israel paid Fatah their $100 million yet? I'll bet they have. Doesn't sound like a good investment to me. Fatah and Hamas, two sides of a very nasty coin.

I really can't say I give a damn. If, by slaughtering one another, Hamas and Fatah are distracted from murdering Israelis (and that includes Israelis of all faiths who are not complicit in terrorism), keep those AK-47s chugging.

I couldn't countenance bear baiting, but I can't work up similar sympathies for these animals.

Here's to thinning the herd.

Just remember, if civil war does break out, it is the Jooos fault.

If they could kill jooos, they wouldn't spend their time killing each other.

As for Chavez and Venezuela, if he nationalizes properties of US companies, Citgo property in the US should be confiscated and sold, with the proceeds compensating the companies who had property confiscated in Venezuela.

30 MootPoint  Mon, Jan 29, 2007 6:29:08pm

I find it strange that they call a cease fire on the same day that 3 Israelis are killed by the first palistinian suicide bomber in many months.

Maybe a coincidence?

Not me, I'm savin' my seven cases for a rainy day.

Maybe we should start something like Piazza for the IDF. Commie Surplus for Paleothugs or something like that. Problem is ammo doesn't spoil like pizza and they would just use what ever is left over from killing each other to kill Israelis.

51 loFlyer  Mon, Jan 29, 2007 7:00:53pm

You know it must really be hard to be a Pali lovin' journalist nowadays. The mean old Israeli's built a "apartheid wall" that also works really well as "anti-terrorist barrier" which means the suicide bombings have really dropped down, and the Kayatushas are wildly inaccurate and are not picking up the slack.
Now you have the paragons of virtue, humanity and good will towards all men, the Hamas and the Abbas, actually shooting at each other instead of the Jews! Whats a reporter to do? Blame it all on Israel and Bush? Thats usually the wisest course, I mean if we can blame global warming on Bush, this ought to be easy. Better yet, we can blame it on global warming caused by Bush under zionist control. Guess its not that hard being a Pali lovin' journalist after all!

I believe this is a historic moment, as the artificial unity of the "Palestinians", imposed by Arab League resolutions in 1964 and 1974, is coming apart. This unity was never real, as the various groups composing the PLO have at different times been primarily loyal to other powers, such as Egypt, Syria and Iraq. All they have had in common is the Nationalist umbrella, as opposed to the religious Jihadi umbrella of competing groups of which the latest incarnation is Hamas.

For decades all this was held at bay by a single man, Yasser Arafat, who in typical dictatorial fashion never seriously contemplated the succession. We are now seeing the consequences of his passing.

I therefore think that what we see now is the real situation, for decades evaded and Camouflaged by Arafat. It will not be resolved unless all concerned, including the Arab League, Israel and the West, wake up from the Arafat spin and acknowledge reality.

Is a palestinian cease fire anything like a rapist's respect for women?

59 DavidJSchwartz  Mon, Jan 29, 2007 7:34:19pm

Olmert decides that Palestinians killing Palestinians is better than defending Israel from Palestinian terrorism:

"Israel will think twice before getting mixed up in Gaza"

The suicide bombing in Eilat on Monday will not lead to a large military operation in the Gaza Strip. The suicide bomber came from Gaza via Sinai, but current events in Gaza are so complex that Israel will think twice before getting mixed up in them.

In other words, the internecine Palestinian conflict is now Gaza's best bulwark against any Israeli operation. When Fatah and Hamas are so good at killing each other, why should Israel intervene and spur them to close ranks against the common enemy?

[Link: www.haaretz.com...]

I didn't know that it was an EITHER or SITUATION.

Time to throw this MAN out as PM.

Yes, there is no such person as a 'palestinian' (correctly spelt in my case, but with a small first letter to show my disrespect for a title that shelters a lie)

Yes it is just a made up word for political purpose.

Glad to have been of help to you.

61 mjk  Mon, Jan 29, 2007 7:38:51pm

I believe that was basically one of the points of leaving Gaza - to give the Palestinians a chance to govern themselves (ha ha ha!) and to basically let the place fall into total and utter civil war. Which has happened. It's mean, but it's basically the gist of what Arik Sharon said would happen. Olmert will probably be PM for a little bit longer, but the Israelis will get sick of him soon.

___

Next question - How many "cease fires" have Hamas and Fatah announced so far? Seriously? How can they think everyone takes them seriously after the billionth announcement of a ceasefire that will never hold?

62 Anat  Mon, Jan 29, 2007 8:06:29pm

#56 yah:

Are you saying there really is no such person as a Palastinian? Is it just a "made up" word to serve a political purpose?

As a matter of fact, I was talking (in #54 above) about the political groups composing the PLO rather than their oppressed subjects. So yes, these groups were just made up to serve political purposes of various Mid East powers, most of them unrelated to Palestine.

But since you ask about the actual people, see #60.

And by the way, up to 1948 "Palestinian" meant a Jewish inhabitant of Palestine. The Arabs did not at that time call themselves "Palestinian". Funny that.

You know, there is just a lot of nuance in these types of cease fires. We need someone like Jon Carry to explain this to us. We conservatives are just not smart enough to understand things like this. And yeah, I am sure there is a political solution to this thing. Send Jimmah, Madeline and Nancy over there and they could whip out a solution in hours.
We just need to throw a little more money at it.

76 looking closely  Tue, Jan 30, 2007 6:26:30am

Allow me to point out once again that Palestinians kill more Palestinians than Israelis do.

One could joke about not taking the term "Palestinian cease fire" seriously, but unfortunately, its no joke.

By any objective measure the so-called Palestinian state should have lost all international support years ago. They've forfeited it by decades of lying, violence, terrorism, and gross fiscal corruption. The entire Palestinian economy is supported by external donations, and that is a major part of the problem.

When the biggest industry in Palestine is "security" (read young men paid gov't money to walk around with guns), is it any suprise that the biggest Palestinian domestic product is violence?

But the fact is Israel has enough foes in the world that there will always be a blind eye turned to that.
