In this AP article on the cold spell in the Midwest, we discover our boneheaded MSM moment of the day: Harsh cold expected to linger in Midwest. (Hat tip: John K.)

Temperatures in Minneapolis and St. Paul were expected to stay below freezing until sometime Tuesday, said National Weather Service meteorologist Karen Trammel. The sub-freezing temperatures could linger even longer in northern Minnesota, she said. Harsh winter weather conditions brought whiteout conditions that were blamed for traffic pileups in Michigan and Ohio.

“Below freezing?” Why would it be news that Minneapolis is below freezing (32 degrees F.) in winter?

Oh, right. It’s news because the actual forecast calls for temperatures below zero degrees Fahrenheit, until at least Tuesday.

If Associated Press writers can’t even get simple things right, what does that suggest about their competency at the larger stuff?
