Pennsylvania Shari’a Watch (Update)
Here’s an update to our story about the mosque in West Philadelphia that’s up in arms over plans to move a liquor store closer to UPenn (putting it a block or two away from the mosque), because Islamic law forbids Muslims to consume alcohol.
A reader who lives nearby sent some photos of the area—and imagine my shock and surprise to learn that the main prayer hall of the mosque is right across the street from the local beer distributor.
Here’s the view from next to mosque (with their anti-liquor sign), and the beer store in the background:

And our Philly operative also informs us that there’s a pizza place next to the beer store that sells cold beer to go (Philly’s weird liquor laws allow restaurants to sell packaged beer, but not grocery stores).
So there are two places to buy liquor already, right across the street from the mosque. It seems clear that this isn’t really about a liquor store at all; it’s about the mosque leaders flexing their political muscle.
