RetweetIsrael to Supply Armored Vehicles to US Marines in Iraq

Wed, Feb 28, 2007 at 6:54:11 pm PST

Allies in action, not merely in words: Report: Israel to Supply Armored Vehicles to U.S. Marines in Iraq. (Hat tip: drapp.)

The London daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat reports that Israel will supply the U.S. Marines in Iraq with specially equipped armored “Golan” vehicles which are specifically suited for urban warfare and can sustain attacks by RPGs and road mines.

67 Earthwirm  Wed, Feb 28, 2007 5:20:26pm

Durendal,

The israeli military wasn't defeated by Hezbollah. The Israeli Politicos were, and Rice helped.

Rice, at one time, was a leading contender for me as a presidenntial candidate. After how she is handling things at the state department, letting people speak out on behalf of the islamists in somalia for instance, and other state department fiascos, she has shown she can't be president, if for the reason she would throw Israel to the curb.

The Israeli Military, if allowed (just like the US Military) would never suffer a defeat. Instead the defeat is at home, by allowing the media and the rest of the world dictate who won, etc.

So is that Arabic for "Guardian" or what?

Arabic for "Der Sturmer"?

Hmmm, what does Google/Yahoo/AskJeeves say?

Maybe not. It seems to be a "liberal" (i.e. anti-Wahhabist) Arabic paper , but not everyone is convinced:

I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS! Al Sharq Al Awsat fff… fff… fff… fakes its liberalism? So says Mona al Tahawy, who lost her column as house liberal there:
The trouble with Asharq al-Awsat, beyond its disturbing acquiescence to Arab regimes, is that it claimed a liberalism that was patently false.

Before my ban, Asharq al-Awsat launched a Web site in English. Designed to show Western readers how liberal it was, the site suffered from Yasser Arafat syndrome. Just as the late Palestinian leader’s statements in Arabic and in English were sometimes contradictory, the newspaper in Arabic would abide by the red lines that govern criticism of Arab leaders while in English it ran roughshod over those very same lines.

A column I wrote tearing into the Egyptian regime for allowing its security forces to beat peaceful protesters and to sexually assault female journalists and demonstrators was spiked from the Arabic newspaper and Web site but appeared in its entirety on the English Web site.

Every journalist working in the Middle East has had to pull punches, no matter who they work for — Arab papers, American papers, British papers. When it’s not the Saudi royal family, it’s a Hariri or an Emad Eddin Adib or a Rupert Murdoch or a Conrad Black, or indeed a Sulzberger. Of course with the Saudis it’s chronic and non-negotiable. But hey, come on Mona Al Tahawy, they gave you a place to start and now I’m sure you’ll do fine in the IHT and elsewhere. I look forward to reading your devastating columns on Saudi Arabia, perhaps?

One good question in the column though: how do your reach Arabs with a liberal message (if you are a liberal columnist/thinker/broadcaster etc.) when the press has so many red lines? Since these regimes are not changing their ways anytime soon, I suspect the answer will be partly TV (as Al Jazeera has already done) and, for a smaller but quickly growing audience, the internet, which is capable of being much more transgressive than TV.

So they're the ones own "our side".

Maybe.

Methinks, honestly, that the Humvee w/ extra armor outperforms this vehicle in a LOT of ways, not mentioning the fact that it probably weighs in lighter. BUT, I don't know the specs of both, so I'm just speculating.

They didn't need to be: they were done like that because it looks good... That's all! There's no need to overlay modernist interpretation on medieval art. Sheesh. How self-indulgent can you get? What kind of research grant are they angling for?

Irish bishops: Israel has turned Gaza Strip into a 'large prison'

By The Associated Press

A group of Irish Roman Catholic bishops on Tuesday called into question Ireland's commercial ties with Israel, saying Israel has made the Gaza Strip "little more than a large prison" for Palestinians.

"Where there is evidence of systematic abuse of human rights on a large scale, as in the Occupied Territories, there are questions that must be asked concerning the appropriateness of maintaining close business, cultural and commercial links with Israel," said auxiliary Bishop of Dublin Raymond Field.

I thought Gaza wasn't "occupied" any more?

They really got their knickers in a twist when it was revealed that Blair was asking for the UK to base some of your future "Son of Star Wars" anti-ballistic defense systems on British soil. At least the US Marines are doing the right thing. Sadly, Israel has too much experience in weaponry..but that experience has given the world so much...yet the US refused to order the TROPHY , and instead, gave Raytheon the contract. Raytheon is light years behind, and even though the TROPHY is not 100 % perfect, it is the best out there, and it was needed for so long. Now? I wonder if Raytheon will have its' version ready in this decade.

139 NY Nana Infuriating, isn't it? I've tried to get my husband to leave the military for many years because of this crap. Lots of the top generals are going to retire and move into cushy jobs with Ratheon, Northrup Grumman, etc.

It's a bit analogous to the state department folks retiring and going to work for Saudi Arabia. It's dirty, dirty, dirty...I honestly had high hopes for a GOP government. It was screamingly obvious during the Clinton admin that our military wouldn't get anything. That's one reason I'm so upset at the GOP now. I knew the donkeys were bastards, but finding out the GOP are only slightly better has been very upsetting.

Remember this article any time you hear some news guy interviewing some retired general about how awful Rumsfeld's pentagon was.

Sixteen months ago, commanders in Iraq began asking the Pentagon for a new system to counter RPGs and other anti-tank weapons.

Last year, a special Pentagon unit thought it found a solution in Israel — a high-tech system that shoots RPGs out of the sky. But in a five-month exclusive investigation, NBC News has learned from Pentagon sources that that help for U.S. troops is now in serious jeopardy.

Created in 2001 by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, OFT acts as an internal “think tank” for the Pentagon and is supposed to take a more entrepreneurial — and thereby less bureaucratic — approach to weapons procurement and other defense issues, and to get help to troops in the field more quickly. OFT officials subjected Trophy to 30 tests and found that it is “more than 98 percent” effective at killing RPGs.

That plan immediately ran into a roadblock: Strong opposition from the U.S. Army. Why? Pentagon sources tell NBC News that the Army brass considers the Israeli system a threat to an Army program to develop an RPG defense system from scratch.

The $70 million contract for that program had been awarded to an Army favorite, Raytheon.

Trophy’s supporters inside the Pentagon are more blunt. As one senior official told NBC News, “This debate has nothing, zero, to do with capability or timeliness. It’s about money and politics. You’ve got a gigantic program [FCS] and contractors with intertwined interests. Trophy was one of the most successful systems we’ve tested, and yet the Army has ensured that it won’t be part of FCS and is now trying to prevent it from being included on the Strykers” that OFT planned to send to Iraq.

For families of soldiers like Denny Miller, any delay in getting help to the troops is unthinkable.

As Miller’s mother, Kathy, put it, “Do they have children over there? Do they have husbands or wives over there? They need to sit back and look at it maybe from a different angle. I just think it's ridiculous!”

The Pentagon is now trying to interest the Marine Corps in testing Trophy. But because of Army opposition, there are currently no plans to send the system to Iraq.

Looking around a bit it appears that these are initial low rate production units. The military is evaluating several vehicles from different suppliers. This is one the RG-31 (which I think is a South African design) is another. Original contract for 148 of those was April 2005 and I did see a reference to one being damaged in May 2005 in Iraq so it seems we have had limited numbers of these types of vehicles in the field for a while.
Here is the list of companies that supplied vehicles for evaluation:

171 Ronnie Schreiber  Wed, Feb 28, 2007 7:00:46pm

The Golan is one of about 8 different vehicles that are being used in an evaluation of something called MERP (Mine Explosive Resistant Platform - I think). As another poster mentioned, they need something between the HumVee and the Stryker. Businesses in the US, Israel, Australia and South Africa are involved in the project and supplying vehicles. One of them, GPV, is less than an hour from here in suburban Detroit.

As for the business with the Trophy system, unfortunately there is corruption and inside dealing with military procurement. A local company producing a purpose built light armored vehicle lost out to a company owned by a former marine colonel that sells a glorified ATV that has minimal protection.

Is this the Israeli military that was defeated by Hezbollah last summer?

Defeated? I think not. Do you get your news from Dail Kos?

The London daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat reports that Israel will supply the U.S. Marines in Iraq with specially equipped armored “Golan” vehicles which are specifically suited for urban warfare and can sustain attacks by RPGs and road mines.

Now that would give our troops too much of an advantage, and would be unfair to the poor terrorists.

It's the Zionist conspiracy in action again.

Our troops in Afghanistan could also use them.

Very cool vehicle.

Thanks, Israel.

John: "They got one big gun. They got a couple-a tanks. They got a hundred Bourishnicoffs running around in Ichiwan outfits."

Russell: "Yah, what do we got?"

John: "We got? What do we got? What are you talking about? We got one heavily armed recreational vehicle, man."

And, we haven't purchased any of these yet...why?

I guess we wouldn't want to offend muslim sensibilities by supporting the zionist economy.

this kind of pisses me off... israel has had this vehicle and JUST NOW we're buying some? what, israle never offered before? we didn't know they had this type of specialized vehicle (doubtful)? where the hell did the disconnect come in, with our closest ally in the ME, when it appears' to me that had we been purchasing these things from day one (when we realized our humvee was inadequate troop protection) we could have not only saved MANY american soldiers' lives but could have waged a more effective urban warfare campaign?!

it also occurs to me how coincidental it is that this deal is now surfacing at a time when the democrats are playing the "troops don't have proper protection" card...

what other military equipment can the US purchase to to improve troop protection?

Our Canadians in Afghanistan are now using the RG-31 Nyala from South Africa, after we lost guys to IEDs in Iltis (don't ask) and Mercedes G-Wagen. Even with up-armoured G-Wagens, I understand out guys don't go outside the wire in anything less than the LAVs or the Nyala.

Truly they are better allies than we are.

Also better than we deserve.
