A few quick notes about the new login system:
1) You must have cookies enabled in your browser to log in; the system uses session cookies and can’t maintain your logged-in status if you turn cookies off.
2) A session will expire after an hour of no activity (update: now extended to six hours). “Activity” is defined as clicking any of our internal links, refreshing the home page, etc.
3) You now need to log in to get to the comment posting form. If you aren’t logged in, you’ll see a login form in place of that old familiar comment form; enter your username and password and click ‘login’ and you’ll be authenticated, receive your cookie, and return to the bottom of the page, with the comment posting form now visible.
4) One of the main reasons for the comment posting change is a flood of spambots trying to post with names like ‘buy phentermine’ and random passwords.
