AP Notices “Ismail Ax”
The Virginia Tech killer wrote the words “Ismail Ax” in red ink on his arm, used the name “A. Ishmael” on the package sent to NBC News, and also apparently named his multimedia file “axishmiel.”
Five days after the murders, the Associated Press finally gets around to reporting these curious facts, but is very careful to let us know that discussing any possible Islamic connections to the name Ismail/Ishmael (in its various spellings) is bad, wrong, and an “intellectually dishonest” mind-crime—according to a professor of Islamic studies at UNC-Chapel Hill, where a Muslim student drove an SUV into a crowd last year in a self-described act of jihad: Internet abuzz over ‘Ismail Ax’ meaning.
The most prominent discussions involve references to Muslim religious texts in which God asks Abraham to slay his son Ishmael in order to prove his loyalty to him.
But making that link is not “intellectually honest” given Cho’s background, said Omid Safi, a professor of Islamic studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
“If you watch the video from the shooter, he very specifically talks about himself in Christian terms,” Safi said, adding that Cho’s references to Jesus Christ and being impaled upon a cross are not words “any Muslim would ever use.”
Interesting that Omid Safi tries to paint Cho as a “Christian,” an argument that makes as little sense as calling this insane killer a Muslim.
UPDATE at 4/21/07 1:07:04 pm:
At one web forum, they’ve discovered “evidence” that the murders may have been a US/Israel psyop. I kid you not: Photo Evidence of US Military Psyop.
