How Many Cars Torched? 367
The Associated Press casually buries an appalling statistic in the middle of an article about Sarkozy’s election: France’s Sarkozy seeks parliament allies.
On election night, scattered violence was reported across France. Police reported that 270 people were taken in for questioning and that 367 parked vehicles had been torched. On a typical night in France, about 100 cars are burned.
One hundred cars torched every night, and the AP wants us to think it’s no big deal.
At least now we know the answer to our poll.
UPDATE at 5/7/07 10:57:18 am:
This AP report greatly downplays the violence; the actual number of torched cars last night was 730.
