LGF Technical Detour

To improve performance at LGF, I’m considering installing the Alternative PHP Cache, which caches the compiled PHP code for commonly used scripts to save a big chunk of processing time. If any LGF geek-oriented readers have experience with APC, I’d like to know your impressions, and any gotchas to watch out for.

Another upgrade I’m considering is less tech-oriented, more lizard army-oriented. I’m planning a feature that will let you rate comments up or down (using Ajax, of course, so the page doesn’t have to reload). Once that’s in place, I may try a system that works a bit like Digg, where if a comment gets more than a certain number of negative votes it’s hidden from the list — although still visible by clicking a link. Alternatively I could simply display the current aggregated rating (positive or negative), without hiding anything. The community here already does a pretty good job of self-policing, and this is intended as a way to improve that. Feedback?

UPDATE at 5/9/07 4:00:08 pm:

Apologies for that little spot of bother; a giant traffic spike from nowhere knocked us offline for a few minutes.

Compare Electricity Prices in your area. Texas Electricity is deregulated; you have the right to choose Texas Electric Rates from among many Texas Electric Companies.

Exceedingly scary.
