LGF Technical Update - Search Enhancements
New features tonight in the LGF search page:
1) One big problem with the old design was the way you specified the time “window” for your search. You could search backwards from the current date by increasing amounts—last day, last week, last month, last year, etc. This approach bogs down more and more as the search times get longer, and even with the new MySQL-based search it was beginning to cause timeouts, especially when searching the millions of comments.
Hence, our new approach: now you specify the search window as a date range, with a ‘from’ and a ‘to’ date. This will give you more control over your searches, and result in fewer timeouts.
To make sure the dates are always entered correctly, you choose the ‘from’ and ‘to’ dates with a Javascript pop-up calendar (an open source script from here), by clicking the button labeled ‘Select’ next to each date field. (You can’t edit the date fields manually.)
To search just one day, set the ‘from’ and ‘to’ fields to the same date. This new ability is very “granular.” I think that’s supposed to be a good thing.
2) You can now change the number of results that are shown on each page, with a popup menu located at the bottom right of the search controls.
