Egypt’s top mufti, Ali Gomaa, who issued a fatwa stating that drinking the urine of Mohammed was a blessed act, in response to another mufti’s fatwa about adult breastfeeding as a way of overcoming the ban against contact with females, has now apologized.

Egyptian Mufti Dr. Ali Gum’a has apologized for a fatwa he issued stating that the companions of the Prophet Muhammad blessed themselves by drinking his urine.

During a discussion by the Academy for Islamic Research at Al-Azhar on the fatwa, Gum’a promised that he would remove from the market all copies of the book containing the fatwa.

UPDATE at 6/4/07 5:57:41 pm:

The Prophet Urine Mufti is currently meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair at a two-day conference on Islam hosted by Cambridge University: Blair launches fund to improve teaching of Islam.

Tony Blair today launched a passionate defence of Islam as a religion of “moderation and modernity”, as he announced a £1m government fund to aid teaching of the religion and train UK imams.
