ABC: UK Police Have 'Crystal Clear' Image of Islamic Terrorist - Update: 2nd Car Bomb Found

Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 12:16:54 pm PDT

ABC News is reporting that UK police have a clear picture of the man who drove that explosive-laden Mercedes in London today. And he looks a lot like a Muslim who was previously arrested in connection with another UK terror plot—but released.

I guess we can rule out the IRA or the Mafia now. (To name two absurd theories floated by UK authorities trying to avoid the I word.)

British police have a “crystal clear” picture of the man who drove the bomb-rigged silver Mercedes outside a London nightclub, and officials tell the Blotter on ABCNews.com he bears “a close resemblance” to a man arrested by police in connection with another bomb plot but released for lack of evidence.

Officials say the suspect had been taken into custody in connection with the case of al Qaeda operative Dhiren Barot, who was convicted of orchestrating a vehicle bomb plot involving targets in London, New York, Newark, N.J. and Washington, D.C.

Officials say a surveillance camera caught the suspect “staggering from the Mercedes” shortly after parking it outside the Tiger Tiger nightclub.

U.S. and British law enforcement officials tell ABC News it is increasingly clear Friday’s bomb plot in London involves multliple vehicles, and is described by a senior official as a “terror plot involving lslamic extremists.”

UPDATE at 6/29/07 12:25:50 pm:

Sky News is reporting that a second car bomb has been found.

UPDATE at 6/29/07 12:51:30 pm:

At a Scotland Yard press conference, it was announced that the second car bomb was packed with very similar materials as the first—a large amount of gasoline, a detonator, and a large quantity of nails.

It sure is: Global warming is because of oil. Oil is produced in the Middle East. More global warming means more enviro-wackos driving enviro-friendly cars, which means less oil, which means the sheiks make less money, which makes them poor, which makes them upset at the West for spoiling their vast fortunes, which makes them go out and blow &*$! up. There, I just proved that all Islamic terrorism is linked to global warming.

Second London car-bomb alert

The second vehicle had been towed from Trafalgar Square to Park Lane overnight because it was illegally parked, CNN reported sources as saying. At the Park Lane garage, workers became suspicious after news of the first incident, because the car smelled of gas, CNN said.

Police said the second car was found to contain components similar to those in the first car -- definitely fuel, and possibly more. They said the car was of grave concern, and could potentially be a second car bomb.

First the French "youths" wage jihad against every automobile in sight, then the British moon-rock disciples take up the torch. And I don' think I need to mention the daily car bombings in Iraq and Afghanistan.

What do islamists have against automobiles, anyway? Have they been declared haram? Has a fatwa been issued against motorized transportation? Are they the next "uncovered meat"? Inquiring minds want to know.

'Dirty bomb' man's sentence cut

Dhiren Barot, 34, had been jailed for a minimum of 40 years after admitting to conspiracy to murder.

But this was reduced to 30 years by three Court of Appeal judges headed by the Lord Chief Justice Lord Phillips.

They said the 40-year term was for "the terrorist who has been convicted, after trial, of a serious attempt to commit mass murder by a viable method".

Planning attacks

Lord Philips said that Muslim convert Barot's conspiracy did not amount to an actual attempt, and it was unclear whether his plots would have succeeded and what the consequences of them would have been.

Barot was jailed for a minimum of 40 years by Mr Justice Butterfield at Woolwich Crown Court last November.

He admitted planning attacks in the UK and the US.

The court heard that Barot planned terror acts including limousines packed with explosives and a radioactive "dirty bomb".

Mr Justice Butterfield had called Barot a "determined, dedicated and highly dangerous" person.

The judge added that Barot's "businesslike" plans would have caused carnage on a "colossal and unprecedented scale" if successful.

Barot's lawyers argued during the appeal that he should not have been given what amounted to a "whole life" sentence after pleading guilty to a charge which in other circumstances would have meant a 20 or 30 years fixed term sentence, less remission.

They said that the conspiracy was a long way from being put into effect when the plotters were arrested.

Lord Phillips, sitting with Lord Justice Lathan and Mr Justice Treacy, said expert scientific evidence showed the "exploding limousines" project was superficially attractive although "amateurish".

However, the judges rejected the argument that an indeterminate sentence for the protection of the public, rather than a fixed term one, was not justified.

Lord Phillips said: "A terrorist who is in the grip of idealistic extremism to the extent that, over a prolonged period, he has been plotting to commit murder of innocent citizens is likely to pose a serious risk for an indefinite period if he is not confined."

SEVEN THINGS I LEARNED ABOUT TODAY'S BOMBING ATTEMPT

LOL......

This was obviously just someone's car, probably belonging to a nail salesman, who kept a lot of samples in his car. He was on his way to a barbecue, of course, which explains the propane. And he needed the extra gas, too, because - hello! - he was driving a gas-guzzler (instead of a hybrid, which is really mean-spirited).

So in effect, this was some right-wing, global warming-enabling carpenter on his way to char little animals for his own gratification.

Well thats all very well and good except we've been dealing with those crimes since the beginning of time (i.e. rape, murder, etc.) Whereas I cant recall the last time multiple car bombs were found in a major western city post 9/11. But because nothing happened therefore we shouldn't bother talking about it? This logic is scary and dangerous. What needs to happen for these people to not think this is all one big joke by the CIA? Does Rosie O Donnell need to be a victim of terrorism to understand that this is real? Wtf

Until they do that Islamic bombings are Britains future, forever.

Dhiren Barot, al-Qaeda, was author of an al-Qaeda terror manual called Rough Presentation for the Gas Limos Project. It sets out in detail a plan to pack limousines with explosives and gas cylinders, park them in car parks beneath buildings and detonate them.

Barot’s guide says: “Gas can be employed to cause large-scale damage to structures since many of them (gas types) are by nature extremely flammable as well as explosive.”

He researched the burning properties of butane, propane, oxygen and acetylene and the strength of the cylinders in which they were sold. It was essential that the explosion would ignite the gas and shatter the metal cylinders into flying metal fragments.

Barot further suggested coating the cylinders with napalm and adding petrol cans filled with nails to “further maximise the damage caused”.

Initial reports about the Mercedes discovered in Haymarket suggest that there were hundreds of nails in the back of the car. On the back seat of the saloon car there were petrol canisters....

I wrote about Barot tangentially in 2005, and I noted that al Qaeda has a tendency to get all sentimental about its targets. Once it picks them out, it keeps going after them.

See what they did with the WTC. They have also fixated on the NYC subways, PATH system, tunnels, and bridges. They're also fixated on London's subways and transit systems.

The Brits have to vigilant that these guys don't keep trying to blow up subways or other areas where a high body count could be attained. It's a tall order, and getting this latest jihadi would be quite important.

I thought Mythbusters had already knackered the contention that mobile 'phone use can spark an explosion with Gasoline fumes.

The cell phone is wired to blasting cap or similar device which is then in turn what actually creates the spark to set off the explosion. That is fairly simple. There are IED's in Iraq that are set off simply by somebody watching the IED with a portable device of any type like an IPod or radio and simply touch the wires to the battery.

THE TYGER (from Songs Of Experience)
By William Blake
Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare sieze the fire?

And what shoulder, & what art.
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears,
And watered heaven with their tears,
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

Update

The car was jammed with gasoline and 18 to 20 boxes of roofing nails. Six to eight tanks of propane, intended to mix with the gasoline in a mist to make a fuel-air explosion, were inside and around the car, counterterrorism officials told NBC News.

Police explosives experts determined that it was a working bomb and disarmed it with a controlled explosion.

Officials told NBC that the car was filled with at least 250 pounds of fuel, creating a highly explosive bomb of the type that had been seen in Iraq but not, until now, in the West.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will call for a “new course” in the war on terror by proposing “a new type of Marshall plan” in a speech Thursday night.

According to the prepared text of of the speech he will deliver to members of the conservative American Enterprise Institute, Romney will call for a partnership that “would assemble resources from developed nations to work to assure that threatened Islamic states had public schools, not Wahhabi madrassas, micro-credit and banking, the rule of law, human rights, basic healthcare, and competitive economic policies.”

The Republican presidential candidate will also call for a “Special Partnership Force,” made up of personnel from the Army’s special forces and the intelligence community.

“Their goal is to build national institutions of stability and freedom, and to promote the rule of law and human rights,” Romney will say.

Dear Mitt,
For at least 50 years we have poured money into Islamic countries with no progress having been made to either stem the spread of extremist Islamism or to make any significant improvement in the standard of living of the average citizen of any of these countries. These countries are in most cases very wealthy and can take care of their own people. I therefore propose that since the old manner of dealing with these countries has not yielded any postivie results it is time to try a new tactic, such as cutting off all funding. Let's try that for 50 years and see if there is any difference.
Sincerely,

Wanna know something strange? Either releasing this terrorists was a "mishap?" Or, it was brilliant police work! Because the bomb, as set, didn't go off.Forcint the suicide bomber out of the car, TO run away. And, TO BE CAPTURED in a very clear shot; on a video camera.

Shows ya, the technical skills are at work, too.

Cameras? Working and the quality of the tape? Sublime. We didn't get there without being forced into a mode where these technologies are created, and then they pay off. A far cry from "fake looking cameras" just to scare away pickpockets working the crowds, ya know?

The other thing? Police have more information than they release to the public.

While the old media journalists seem to be stuck, somewhere, where the best they can do is look puzzled. And, stupid.

And, now that Tony Baloney Blair is gone; Gordon has his work cut out for him. Repairing the dinky idea that there's a "religion of peace" out there that you can work with.

All in all a good day for law inforcement.

Oh, that silver Mercedes? It sets the Soddie's back $100,000 on each of these cars. At least. So two failures. GOOD! Some day, ahead, the Soddie's are gonna pay for being perveyors of terror. Before or after Mecca goes "pfft?" I do not know.

Hey, even hollywood may notice that police work like this deserves a movie! ANd, given that the London police KNOW where this comes from; it's like knowing where the sewer pipe's broken, that you can mend. That up to now just gave your streets bad smells.

Took the Internet, of course, to be of help. Neat. Bunch'a Baker Street irregulars. And, tehcnology, for ya.

Nadia the America-hater peace loving blogger accurately describes how Arabs and Muslims are blamed for everything (the article talks about the U.S. but the same can apply to Britain) when they never do anything wrong!

And yet we are the first people the collective United States looks to when there has been a tragedy. When there is a bombing, we are the first suspects. Mass shooting? Power outage? Fuel shortage? Must have been an Arab.** Despite all our integration into American society, and despite the assimilation of previous generations of Arab Americans, we still become such easy scapegoats for all the problems in American society (a position we unfortunately share with other non-white communities).

ABC News has learned the bomb was composed of tanks of propane, butane and 125 liters of gasoline (33 U.S. gallons), roofing nails and a fuse that initial reports indicated was constructed of simple light bulb or flashbulb filaments and designed to be triggered by a mobile telephone.

Based on an initial forensic investigation, authorities say they believe the fuel-air mixture was incorrect and ultimately led the bomb to fail.

Oh, that silver Mercedes? It sets the Soddie's back $100,000 on each of these cars. At least. So two failures. GOOD! Some day, ahead, the Soddie's are gonna pay for being perveyors of terror. Before or after Mecca goes "pfft?" I do not know.

The first car was a roughly 15- to 20-year-old E-Class, so they got off pretty cheap on that one. There's one (a 1994) listed on eBay's UK site for £1,950.00 right now.

NASCAR-Weather Alert

Not a cloud in the sky in New Hampshire, where, with just a few cars yet to qualify, AJ Allmendinger in the Team Red Bull Toyota is absolutely going home, as the slowest car, and in another Toyota, Dave Blaney in the Bill Davis Racing #22 Cat car is on the provisional pole.

But the big NASCAR news- MODERATE FLOODING on the Nueces River means LaBonte Park, named for Corpus Christi native "Texas" Terry LaBonte, is completely under water. Upstream, in San Patricio County, the river is causing MAJOR FLOODING.

Bobby LaBonte in the Petty Enterprises #43 Cheerios Dodge is currently 25th.

The second slowest time was just posted by Dale Jarrett in the #44 UPS Toyota, he is going home as well. He used up all six of his "Past Champions Provisionals" in the first nine races. Oddly enough, David Reutimann has managed to qualify for most of the races in his Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota.

Looks like last week's winner, Colombian F-1 Monaco Grand Prix and Indy 500 past winner Juan Pablo Montoya will start in the top 10, currently with a 5th place spot, with ten cars yet to attempt to qualify.

In the fire dept. it's a BLEVE Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion.

In the military it's an FAE Fuel Air Explosive.

Fortunately they are not common, as they are some the largest non-nuclear explosions on record. The parameters are pretty tight to get a BLEVE a number of conditions have to be met.

They are tricky to do intentionally. Which my be the reason the London devices did not go off.

Our job was to shovel ballast right next to the overturned propane car on top of which was a welder with an acetalyn torch cutting off the superstructure. Somehow, even the double-time we were making just didn't seem enough right then.

Re: the wannabe bombing scene in London, I wonder if the Londoners are relieved at the (seemingly) extraordinary surveillance their city streets are under. I read a lot of British based sites (including the Beeb) and I read a lot of comments by Brits (and American contributors to the sites) denouncing our Patriot Act as a loss of freedom and egregious gov intrusion (all Bush's fault). Hahahahah Mitt plagiarized from the Silky Pony? I didn't read past Edwards's name the first time:

6:30 p.m. ET UPDATE: The Edwards campaign points out the former North Carolina senator proposed a similar new type of Marshall plan “weeks ago.”
“John Edwards has proposed a strong, smart national security policy to fight terrorists, keep our country safe and restore our place of moral leadership in the world,” Edwards’ Deputy Campaign manager Jonathan Prince said in a statement. “He has called for the creation of a ‘Marshall Corps’ to help weak and failing states, a global effort to provide public education, improve public health, and expand economic opportunity; it’s promising that Gov. Romney seems to be joining us with his call for a ‘new type of Marshall Plan.’”

Just about the only difference between a BLEVE and a FAE is the FAE ain't boiling the fuel.

The FAE, in the proper fuel/air ratio, gives the maximum amount of energy release in the minimum amount of time. The BLEVE, while particularly nasty, bleeds off the energy relatively "slowly". Note that I say relatively, 'cause I sure wouldn't want to be in the neighborhood when it corks off.

This dude just brought it home from work at a State University lab.

An HCN concentration of 300 parts per million in air will kill a human within a few minutes.[citation needed] The toxicity is caused by the cyanide ion, which prevents cellular respiration. Hydrogen cyanide (under the brand name Zyklon B) was perhaps most infamously employed by the Nazi regime in mid-20th century as a method of mass murder. More recent examples include the usage of this gas in gas chambers.

Hydrogen cyanide is commonly listed amongst chemical warfare agents which cause general poisoning.[9] As a substance listed under Schedule 3 of the Chemical Weapons Convention as a potential weapon which has large-scale industrial uses, manufacturing plants in signatory countries which produce more than 30 tonnes per year must be declared to, and can be inspected by, the OPCW.

Honestly, while the potential for a bombing in the UK is disgusting, a fairly dense group of "educated" British only care about boycotting "evil Israel," and would blame any such terror attempts on the "Zionist led oppression" of Palestinians. So I'm really not surprised this is happening.

The British seem to be afflicted with a rather hefty diagnosis of Obsessive Appeasement Disorder (OAD). I would say that the UK is a far more dangerous place than Israel to visit today, because their Arabist policies encourage the Muslim population to immigrate to the UK. The hope is that these people integrate into society and form the basis for a low-cost workforce. Government officials are so blind to the notion that a sizable portion of Muslims in British society don't want to integrate into the secular, anti-Christian population, but rather impose Sharia Law upon the largely agnostic British citizenry. After all, so many contend, once these people have tasted freedom, it isn't logical they would want to go back to their religious ways, right? --Wrong. That is what so many in the UK are thinking-- how blind these educated moonbats are!

MI-6 might be doing a decent job on the inside fighting these cronies, but they aren't educating their own people about the dangers they face, and they keep looking for low-cost outsiders to keep their economy running, without verifying the compatibility of those outsiders with societal norms. It's kind of like a sinking ship. Eventually power will be lost to the Bilge pumps, and down she goes.

PS Charles, it looks like the word "Moonbat" isn't in the spelling database!

428 abu_garcia  Fri, Jun 29, 2007 1:58:59pm

I know, nobody likes a smartass, but a BLEVE is when a fluid is confined in a container, like a boiler without a safety valve and the pressure goes critical. In an FAE it starts either as combustion or from a booster (kind of like a large detonator) and the volume of fuel is so large that the pressure cannot dissipate fast enough. This pressure backing up acts as a confining medium, but there has to be a LOT of it.

The FAE is the militarized BLEVE, the military noted the power of BLEVE. The key was control for the military. Second they could not and the heat component. In a BLEVE the liquid is confined raising the boiling point. When the container is breached pressure drops to 1 atomsphere and the the boiling point drops dramatically. The now unconfined liquid converts from liquid to vapor state almost instantaneously. Propane which expands at 1 gal liquid to 1700 gallons of gas, the vapor expands until it reaches the upper flammability limit, where in the presence of a fire it all ignites, releases all the stored energy at once.

The FAE cannot use the heating component of a BLEVE, they do use the expanding vapor portion of the equation. Some FAE's use liquid to vapor, others use a solid to dust (look up dust explosions). The thermobaric explosives use the same processes to create huge over pressures in confined areas. PV=NrT when you increase the pressure and the other parts stay the same the temperature goes up, way up, hence the name "thermo" temperature and "baric" pressure.

Its back to the old faithful from Sebastian Vilar Rodriguez, but how true it is:

I walked down the street in Barcelona, and suddenly discovered a terrible truth -- Europe died in Auschwitz.

We killed six million Jews and replaced them with 20 million Muslims. In Auschwitz we burned a culture, thought, creativity, talent. We destroyed the chosen people, truly chosen, because they produced great and wonderful people who changed the world.

The contribution of this people is felt in all areas of life: science, art, international trade, and above all, as the conscience of the world.

These are the people we burned.

And under the pretence of tolerance, and because we wanted to prove to ourselves that we were cured of the disease of racism, we opened our gates to 20 million Muslims, who brought us ignorance, religious extremism and lack of tolerance, crime and poverty due to an unwillingness to work and support their families with pride.

They have turned our beautiful Spanish cities into the third world, drowning in filth and crime. Holed up in the apartments they receive free from the government, they plan the murder and destruction of their naive hosts.

And thus, in our misery, we have exchanged culture for fanatical hatred, creative skill for destructive skill, intelligence for backwardness and superstition. We have exchanged the pursuit of peace of the Jews of Europe and their talent for hoping for a better future for their children, their determined clinging to life because life is holy, for those who pursue death, for people consumed by the desire for death for themselves and others, for our children and theirs.

What a terrible mistake was made by miserable Europe.

Poverty does not cause terrorism, but terrosism certainly causes poverty. Just what does the ME produce, innovate, distribute, market, etc? Nothing. When an "youth" in an Islamic society reaches working, producing age he does.....what? Nothing. Islam is primitive. It is the dark side. It is nothingness and, as such, all you have is anarchy.

This trend in ME Islamic societies today is extremely and eerily similar to the anarchy movements in Europe and US in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, in that time Anarchy as a mass movement never gained traction - it was always fringe. Today it is being adopted by entire societies - and that's what scares the shiite out of me!

473 Carol Herman  Fri, Jun 29, 2007 2:38:35pm

Hey, Ward Cleaver, #326. IF the cars were stolen, then they were free.

But not to the Soddies.

Because the Soddies pay "retail." They fund the horror shows that support the Bartok's. How many years devoted to "writing" the "gas tank science experiments?" Even without Halal, this stuff costs money.

And, I read about the "average cost per IED" set at $100,000 in Irak. It could cost more in London, ya know? The "scientist" had a cell of 7. They're not just fed on table scraps.

It's probably more expensive than you think to get the car "stuffed with fertilizer canisters, and propane tanks. Heck, even if your collectors earn "minimum wage" ... or however the Soddie's work their pay scales; it costs money to do.

Ain't free.

And, ain't "next to nothing," either.

And, once you add up the stockpile of cars that have exploded in any given month? It would give you a greater sense to what is going on than just the American body count. (Which doesn't even match the deaths on the highways and roads.)

Most Americans aren't stupid. Ditto, I'd say the same for the average bloke in London, too. That's why more people reach for the Net connections; than actually depend on airheads to deliver their news via the old media.

Wanna talk of fuel? The old media's misreporting is what's leading to their subscription shortfalls.

As to these two cars? Whatever it's cost the Saud's? Like digging for dry holes. You don't think there's anger in the flapping tents?

The best news is what we don't see.

Great police work isn't something you just stumble over.

On the other hand? Imagine those dudes with the tow truck? Just doing their jobs. Towing a bomb from Trafalga Square to an underground parking space. (Some faces get caught on video. Others? They're just known to the locals. And, then? Try to live this stupidity down.)

There are more connecting dots out there than you think.

#431 jcm Sorry, I had a long phone call.

In a BLEVE the liquid is confined raising the boiling point. When the container is breached pressure drops to 1 atomsphere and the the boiling point drops dramatically.

This is correct.

Propane which expands at 1 gal liquid to 1700 gallons of gas, the vapor expands until it reaches the upper flammability limit, where in the presence of a fire it all ignites, releases all the stored energy at once.

The "at once" only occurs because of the UCVE which is a result of the inability of the large cloud to dissipate the pressure. This IS NOT a BLEVE and has nothing to do with a BLEVE. An explosive detonator scatters the fuel, yes propane is used but there is also some AN. Watch the videos of an FAE, first the material disperses, then it detonates. It would not detonate without the confining backpressure of the volume, it would then deflagrate.

Posted some at ABC blog - lively discussion hampered by slow posting (did the post reviewer go home? ? ?) so I am posting my last reply to "Charles" (most definitely not our lizardiod master - some other Charles) here in case it doesn't get posted there.

"I'm sorry if I'm incorrect but what terrorist attack was there in DC in 1977? I don't recall any." Charles

Charles, there was an attack - I was there, so I know. We were also attacked in the 1970s on our soverign territory in Iran (our embassy). Our allies were repeatedly attacked, which is why we were part of a unilateral force of allies in the 1980s.

That's not the point. The point is that you are parroting "fact bites," not all of which are facts, rather than learning more about Islam, radical Islam (which is a throwback and which is not held in high esteem by all Muslims by any stretch). Radical Islam views all of the west as Dar ul-Harb (the land of war). We live in the land of war as far as radical Islam is concerned. We are prey to all radical Islamists.

"There is only one place on earth which can be called the home of Islam (Dar-ul-Islam), and it is that place where the Islamic state is established and the Shari ah is the authority and God's limits are observed, and where all the Muslims administer the affairs of the state with mutual consultation. The rest of the world is the home of hostility (Dar-ul-Harb). A Muslim can have only two possible relations with Dar-ul-Harb: peace with a contractual agreement, or war. A country with which there is a treaty will not be considered the home of Islam."~Syed Qutb

In a sense, Charles, you are correct. Until we kowtow, accept our dhimmi status, agree we are inferior, and pay jizya to the Ummah, we will be "the enemy." The difference between you and me is that I won't accept I am inferior, pay the jizya, or convert under the sword.
