RetweetLGF Technical Detour: Ajax Comments Running

Sun, Jul 8, 2007 at 3:59:03 pm PDT

We had a very good shakeout test for the new system over the past couple of days; releasing it Friday caused a pretty remarkable surge of comments (over 7,000), setting an all-time record even though most of them were just in open threads.

That stress test revealed a synchronization problem that otherwise would not have shown up, as comments were posted so quickly that many ended up with the same timestamp. This caused the duplicate copies of comments and incorrect post numbering many of you noticed. And that bug is now squashed.

Recent updates:

* the comment posting system is completely Ajax-driven, resulting in near chat-room speed because you can post and see new comments without ever reloading the page. Every thread is a little chat room! (And if you’re using a browser that can’t do Ajax, it will gracefully fall back to the old system that requires a page reload after posting.)

* there’s an almost-live preview of your comment, that shows up above the comment posting form when you click the ‘preview’ button, showing exactly what your comment will look like when it’s posted.

* any deleted comments in the thread are now automatically updated (hidden from view) when you post a comment or click ‘new comments,’ to prevent you from reading or replying to a post that has been consigned to the /dev/null directory.

* the previous/next post links that appear at the top and bottom of each thread now include the number of comments posted in the previous and next thread.

* to use the posting features, of course, you’ll need to be logged in to an LGF account. But even if you aren’t logged in, you can use the ‘new comments’ button to follow a developing discussion without reloading the entire page. (Yes, even the trolls can do this.)

  • Comments are open and unmoderated, and do not necessarily reflect the views of Little Green Footballs.
  • Obscene, abusive, silly, or annoying remarks may be deleted, but the fact that particular comments remain on the site in no way constitutes an endorsement of their views by Little Green Footballs.
  • Posts that contain phone numbers, street addresses, email addresses or other personal information will also be deleted, as will posts that consist only of a variation on the word, "First!"
  • Comments that advocate violence will be cause for immediate banning with no appeal.
  • Disagreement and debate are welcome, but insults and abuse are not, and may cause your account to be blocked.
  • REMEMBER: posting comments at LGF is a privilege, not a right. Abuse that privilege, and your account will be blocked.

Well, if we had Mary Poppin's vitamin tonic, we'd all get what we want and feel better to boot.

So much better than a drink dispenser!

I'd like to share a few observations:
1) Rosie O'Donnell is a fat retard w/ money and enablers
2) Al Gore is a fat retard w/ money and enablers
3) Jesse Jackson is a retarded racist w/ money and enablers
4) Ditto Al Sharpton and members of CAIR
5) John Edwards is a closet gay (not that there's anything wrong with that)
6) NY's governor Eliot Spitzer is a thuggish bully, pure and simple
7) Liberals will ruin this country
8) Fred Thompson will be elected the next president and fore go the above observation for eight years
9) Muslims who refuse to assimilate need to be deported posthaste
10) Eli Manning and the NY Giants will win the next Superbowl
11) What..this isn't the drinking thread? my bad...[slinks off and hangs head in embarrassment]

22 grumpy old codger  Sun, Jul 8, 2007 4:14:15pm

On my side bar list of favorites, LGF used to be designated by a ittle green football. Since the new ajax system updates, however, the logo on the side bar has changed. It now resembles a sight on a scoped rifle or (more sinisterly, St. George's cross, as the lines are in red. Can anyone explain this to me? Are we now in a crusader mode? Are we targeting residents, symbolically, of LLL? Are we drawing a bead on idiotarians?
Also, saw an earlier thread from yesterday where the submitter stated that Jews worked for education, whilst Moslems worked for hatred. I believe a good explanation of this is found in how the sacred texts of both are considered. For Moslems, it was written by their god and not a word can be changed. There is no way that the quran can be updated or modified. Compare this to the study of the Torah, where people labor over exactly what the passage meant and what it means. One looks forward, while the other stagnates. Gee, i wonder which is which?

Some of us have relatives and friends who are mentally retarded. To use that term as a descriptor of a handicapping condition is perfectly fine, because there is no shame in it.

To use it as a slur and as a derogatory term implies that there IS shame in it. It is also unfair to the retarded to be grouped with the likes of Rosie . Please refrain from using the word 'retard' in that way. It makes you look, well, you know.

Thank you.

You know what's weird? While you could use that term on my son, I never think of him in those words. It's always "brain damaged", "disabled." Never retarded. That word actually doesn't get enough across, in my opinion.

But that's my limited experience.

Trust me, Mama, every day is a reminder caring for him. So it's not going to change reality. I usually don't even remember the day, until later I realize and it all makes sense. The same thing used to happen on the anniversary of my mother's death. But that hasn't been an issue for decades now.

Just a quick drive by. For those that haven't been over to Blackfive you need to go check out the little exchange going on between a former state dept employee who was in Iraq and Michael Yon that is being referred by Uncle Jimbo.
The case of the aiman who was shot and psoted over here is now on Instapundit.
And last, in cruising around the liberal blogs I found this little description of the attempted terrorist attacks in England.

On the other side of the world, a group of Muslim doctors in Great Britain staged two amateurish acts of political theater which experts have said would likely have caused little real loss of life (had not one of them managed to set fire to himself. The result? The news media here at home stages a three ring circus of terra.

So that is all it was, political theater, you know like the guys in orange jumpsuits protesting against Gitmo. I won't reveal the site but is the persons' screen name

An old but very telling account of the misogynistic nature of the Shiite. This will make you sick and angry. Many Sunni in the Gulf States are scared that it is beginning to infect Sunnis. The current alliance against America sy the fundalmentalists outside of Iraq has dulled the Sunnis hatred of Shiite practices.

My son isn't quite that hard. We can actually leave him home alone for an hour and he's pretty good. The rules are he can't answer the phone or the door, but he's been known to go outside and get the mail when he isn't supposed to! We've even tried to disable his wheelchair, but he's figured out how to reconnect the power, even.

Usually he sleeps through the night, unless he kicks the covers off. He used to yell every night whenever he would drop his Bible out of bed (he has to sleep with it, you see). So we worked out a way to use a bungie cord and keep it in bed with him. :D

When he goes to camp, that's our respite. We'd like to get something more, but we've never found anyone that we're really comfortable leaving him with for extended periods.

The daughter misses her brother, even though he doesn't believe it.

Live Earth venues featured aboriginal elders, chimpanzee calls from scientist Jane Goodall, a holographic Gore and more than 100 of the biggest names in music - including Bon Jovi, Smashing Pumpkins and The Police.

The concerts were backed by Gore, whose campaign to force global warming onto the international political stage inspired the event. Musicians and celebrities at each show encouraged fans to take little steps, such as not leaving electrical devices plugged in when not in use and changing to low-energy light bulbs.

Fifty bucks for a beer? It was Livid Earth in Sydney

Out front, Crowded House were getting reacquainted, Missy Higgins made a cameo with Paul Kelly, and a beamed message from the "former next president of the United States", Al Gore, told the 45,000-strong throng they had the power to halt climate change.

But out back, where revellers go to buy their fluids and to get rid of them, and where big events often live or die, there was a different kind of drought. Faced with record beer queues, thirsty fans at Saturday's Live Earth concert at Sydney's Aussie Stadium were seen by the Herald offering others $50 for their beer rather than wait an hour to buy refreshments.

Thousands, deprived of the traditional rock 'n' roll accompaniment, went to a Coca-Cola stand, forgetting that its manufacturers had been under fire in India for allegedly creating water shortages and pollution around their bottling facilities.

Scores were seen leaving within the first two hours of the nine-hour festival, fed up with the lack of basic services, cutting their losses on a $99 ticket. Gate attendants were heard telling the human tide that they should complain to the promoter.

It was "unAustralian", one spectator protested. "This is what happens when you let hippies organise a big event," another said. One woman, asked by Missy Higgins "how you all are back there", earned a wry round of applause from the stands when she shouted: "Sober."

But Rina Ferris, a spokeswoman for the event's promoters, Michael Chugg and Mark Pope, said neither the venue nor the promoter had received a single complaint. And queues and sobriety were not enough to prevent the global party from being a roaring success for those who stuck it out until the dying strains of Crowded House.

Squads of pamphleteers handed out tips - on recycled paper - about tackling climate change. The stadium's hoardings were covered with the event's "seven pledges" for improving our carbon footprint.

Police charged 19 people with drug offences.

The Sydney event was one of eight Live Earth concerts. . The others were in Tokyo, Shanghai, Hamburg, London, Johannesburg, New York and Rio de Janeiro, with a token gig in Antarctica.

In Britain, organisers had to explain Madonna's participation after the US Fox News Network revealed her links to some of the world's biggest polluters. Her Ray of Light Foundation has $US4.2 billion of shares in companies such as the aluminium giant Alcoa, the Ford Motor Company and Weyerhaeuser, a forest products company.

Kevin Wall, the founder of Live Earth, told London's Sunday Telegraph: "Madonna is here today, which shows her commitment. Today we're not focusing on what she or any of the artists may have done in their past; it is about the future."

Greenpeace criticised the German leg of the concerts because the carmaker DaimlerChryslerhad been chosen as a sponsor.

Terror debate raises stark views

"A Stealth bomber in Iraq is the moral equivalent of a suicide bomber in Scotland".

That was the message of Aamer Anwar, a leading human rights lawyer, during a BBC Scotland programme entitled "Scotland After the Bomb".

Sharp intakes of breath as well as rounds of applause could be heard as he gave his views during the debate, which drew a studio audience from across the UK.
...
He said: "There is no justification for the murder of innocent people. The US and Israel, however, are equal to any 9/11 hijacker.
...
He added that it was a myth that there was an inclusive, multicultural Scotland as many young Muslim felt alienated by the prevalent culture of "binge drinking and Big Brother".

Today's UN scandal update.

The next round in the investigation of the United Nations Development Program’s scandal-tainted operations in North Korea is about to begin.

The question is whether it will be any more successful than the original probe in getting a clear picture of a UNDP program that the U.S. government, among others, charges was hijacked by the communist government of Kim Jong Il and funneled millions in UNDP hard currency into North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.

Looks like North Korea is being replaced by Iran who had replaced Iraq.

That was the message of Aamer Anwar, a leading human rights lawyer

Here's Aamer Anwar and how he really feels:

Overall, the March was pretty passive. There didn't appear to be much angry emotion expressed. The only exception was a small group of young Muslim youths led by activist Aamer Anwar who was whipping them up with his bullhorn alternatively shouting "Tony Blair" or "George Bush", to which the Muslim youths yelled "Terrorist, terrorist". He also shouted "Victory to", with the response from the crowd, "Intifada, Intifada".

The only drama of the entire march came around 1pm when Anwar took the group down a side road leading to the entrance to the SECC, which was not intended for Marchers. Police rushed to block it, and for a moment it looked like there might be some argy-bargy.

The Police pulled Anwar out, and told him to turn the marchers around. Anwar, having got his moment of publicity, told them all to turn back, which they duly did. End of the excitement.

Me like Red Hat.

As for the kernel panics, don't remind me. I'm seeing them suddenly when I try to delete some large files created by EyeTV. (Only the files created by the most recent versions though -- so I think it's an EyeTV problem, not something in the hardware.)

More than likely. Have you tried doing a repair permissions in Disk Utility before deleting the files?

Just a guess. Been a while since I've dealt with big video files on a Mac.

Redhat, a wonderful Raleigh company has never been owned by Novell, a lovely Utah company.

re: #163 buzzsawmonkey
Suggestion:
Since the new blinding comment speed does not help conversational continuity, can the link-to-the-comment-being-commented-on feature which was initially introduced with the "reply" button be reconsidered?

I'm concerned about the comments turning into mere links and one-liners; some of the multi-paragraph posts here have been very good. But with superfast posting, there will be 100 comments between the initial post and the reply; there should be some way to make sure they are easily read together.

Yeah, that might be a good idea. The objection to it, though, is that it clutters up the comment posting box with HTML code and could be confusing.

Charles: don't think I'm not agog over the recent improvements--I am. I'm just afraid that some of the more contemplative discussion may suffer, and I think that would be a shame.

I suggested reviving the comment-replied-to link as a way of keeping continuity, but I may be a little previous in suggesting it. I offer it merely as a possibility to keep in mind, if the rhythm of the conversation ends up getting too quippy.

Not that I mind quippy, of course. But it would be a shame if the comments became <blockquote>nothing but links and one-liners</blockquote>.

In the meantime, Charles, thank you for the improvements--and for considering my comment.

THIS WAS A TEST-I HAVE MESSED UP MY TEST.

More specifically:

kdump
sr/bin/kdump displays the kernel trace files produced with ktrace in human readable format.

kextcache
sr/sbin/kextcache creates or updates kext caches, which are used to speed up kernel extension loading operations and to prepare kexts for inclusion in such media as device ROM.

kextload
bin/kextload can be used to explicitly load kernel extensions, validate them to see that they can be loaded by other mechanisms, such as kextd, and to generate symbol files for debugging the kext in a running kernel.

That looks like it might do the trick. Looks like there's one command line tool to determine kext dependencies/links (kextstat) and another to turn them on/off (kextunload).
For some reason I was thinking they had an Aqua interface tool for this. I need to reinstall dev tools myself. It's been too long since I've done anything but websurfing on my Mac. My current gig involves GPS cellphones and a website that is horribly windows-centric.

Yep, tried that early on. First, dump the preference file for the misbehaving application. Then repair permissions. Those two simple steps fix a lot of problems.

Yours uses a blanket?

I'll never forget the first time he came screeching through the house, into the kitchen and crashed into the wall at full speed. After hurling himself to the floor and lying there a few seconds, he piped up, "I'm okay. No body panic." He was three.

I didn't suspect it, but it makes total sense. At the application level, Mac OS is pretty bulletproof, but journaling is a very low-level function--and if a number overflows a machine register in a device driver the kernel just might panic like this.

Makes total sense. If you're a hopeless geek.

Looks like diskutil will let you disable journaling via terminal. If you want to do it the GUI way you've got to boot the problem machine in firewire mode and connect it to another Mac, but you've probably figured that out already ;)

289 NY Nana  Sun, Jul 8, 2007 6:10:57pm

For any fellow Steyniacs...sorry if this has been posted. I am lazy.

On the eve of Independence Day, the people of this great republic declared their independence from the United States Senate under the stirring battle-cry, "No legislation without explanation!" The geniuses who'd cooked up the "comprehensive" immigration bill's "grand bargain" behind the scenes in the pork-filled rooms had originally planned to ram it through in 48 hours before Memorial Day. And, right to the end, the bipartisan Emirs-for-life of Incumbistan gave the strong impression they regarded it as an affront to be required by the impertinent whippersnappers of the citizenry to address the actual content of the legislation.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) dismissed critics of the bill as "racist." Sen. George Voinovich (R-Ohio) complained that the peasants had somehow got hold of his phone number and he felt "intimidated."

Sen. Trenthorn Lotthorn (R-Lottissippi) said: Who cares if they call? They could call 1-800-BLOWHARD (and leave off the "D" for "Deal's already done") 24 hours a day and he still wasn't going to listen to them. "To think that you're going to intimidate a senator," he scoffed, "into voting one way or the other by gorging your phones with phone calls -- most of whom don't even know where Gulfport is." (Gulfport is a port in the Gulf emirate whose grateful people Sultan Trent has ruled o'er lo these many years.)

More artfully, the Democrats' leader Harry Reid, instead of insulting his old base, invented a new one. Among the torrent of calls from racist intimidatory talk-radio listeners who don't know where Gulfport is, Reid had somehow managed to get through to the one constituent worth staying on the line for, a man who supports the bill. Who is he? Well, according to the Senate majority leader, his name is, er, "Tommy."

Tommy Hilfiger? Tommy Lasorda? Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra with vocal refrain by Jo Stafford and the Pied Pipers? Tommy Lee in the director's cut, where in the hitherto deleted scene right at the end he says to Pamela Anderson, "Sorry, honey, I'd love to carry on for another 20 minutes but I gotta call Sen. Reid in Washington. If you hardworking Canadians are going to do the jobs Americans won't do, I need to get your X-visa sorted out?"

Ah, but Reid explained that he couldn't identify the Tommy in question in case he was arrested and deported. This Tommy has to stay "living in the shadows," like Tommy Lee in the bit where he's partly obscured by Pamela's embonpoint. Alas, this heartwarming vignette left many cynics unmoved. On the radio, Laura Ingraham suggested that "Tommy" might be entirely fictional and merely Reid's imaginary friend. I proposed to Laura that "Tommy" might like to start dating John Edwards' "coatless girl," whose Dickensian tale of woe figures in every Edwards stump speech: Apparently she goes to sleep shivering every night because her daddy was laid off at the mill and she can't afford a winter coat. If Tommy and the coatless girl married, he could buy her a coat for $9.99 at Wal-Mart and she could fill in a routine Spousal Application form with U.S. Immigration, which only takes 10 years to process, as opposed to the cumbersome and time-consuming 24-hour instant amnesty visa for seasonal fruit-pickers and seasonal jihadists contained in the Senate bill.

Sen. Trenthorn Lotthorn, meanwhile, thinks America is a nation of goatless girls. They don't understand goats the way an experienced goat-farmer such as himself does. "If the answer is 'build a fence,' " Lotthorn declared, "I've got two goats on my place in Mississippi. There ain't no fence big enough, high enough, strong enough, that you can keep those goats in that fence.[...]

The money is secondary -- what seemed to make a difference was a day when he was really being a brat and I started listing all the nice things his mother does for him and his siblings. Something clicked, I guess, and he's been much better about helping out.

He still complains, but he's gotten a lot better about picking up after himself and helping out with his brother and sister. The responsibility makes him feel more "grown up." And it gets a good response from p & m.

Ha! My first 2 were 2 years and 4 days apart, both born during Hanukka..the #3? 18 months later. And a bit over 5 years later? #4! Boy, girl, boy, boy. The 3 sons were easier to bring up than the 1 girl! But now that she is a wife and mother, all of a sudden, I know stuff. :)

As an only, I was totally unprepared for food fights, 'Mummy, it's not faaaiiir, I didn't do it!'..and my husband is older by 7 years than his brother. Name it ,we went through it..and now? Our 3 little grandkids are our best revenge! I cannot keep a straight face, sadly.

Looking back? The 4 were really great kids..there was that incident of one of the boys jumping off a bed, yelling 'kowabunga! and the sutures in the back of his head that still show..and of son #2 falling off his sister's toy chest, requiring sutures on the side of his nose. To this day, he insists that daughter did it. He was 3 and she was 4 1/2 at the time.

We would put them to bed by birth order, 5-10 minutes apart.

Enjoy them...all of a sudden, they are adults.

I have a normal sized yard but I make the most of the space with raised beds. It's amazing how much food you can grow in a normal sized yard.

I figured you'd discoverd some untapped source of wild shallots on your fishing trips.

As I work toward a xeriscape lawn, I'm wondering about raised beds for that kind of thing - as well as innocent 'walls.' I have a fenced yard, but I like coverage as well.

I gave up on garlic. It's so cheap that I decided to make better use of the space. My garlic beds are now growing artichokes and asparagus.

Yep, have five, two still teen agers. They do grow fast. The youngest is now taller than I am! And he will begin 7th grade in September.
Yah, they do grow fast...too bad so many of US don't grow-up.

I made my raised beds from salvaged concrete topped with a row of bricks. With the pond in the middle the garden has a very Roman feel to it.

Really? All I can ever find in the stores here is either CA or imported garlic... I prefer some of the more exotic strains so I'm pretty much stuck growing my own...My current favorites are Chilean Silver, a softneck with a great mild flavor, and Chesnok Red, a hardneck with extra large cloves and very strong flavor...

Enjoy them...all of a sudden, they are adults.

People always told me that when I was tearing my hair out. I never believed them. I do now.

Same here..enjoy the girl! It is amazing..I look through the photos of their childhood, etc., and can't believe that all but one are in their 30's...we were not partying when the youngest moved out on his own...every time they visit or we see them is a gift.

Yesterday when I was young...

Didn't Voinovich cry over the nomination of John Bolton to the U.N.?

Grown Senators aren't supposed to cry.

Yes he did.

What a show that was. Of course, most of us have figured out that he was acting (like a pussy, I might add). It's too bad there have been so many other important things issues that someone couldn't look into what his motivations were.

C'mon. A grown man crying - over the appointment of an ambassador? At the very least, his political opponent should make hay out of that one.

I'm redoing the whole garden -- new raised beds, a new pond, and a much improved drainage system. The old garden got 86ed when we had work done on the house -- that and the hurricanes a few years back. No wind damage, but 31" of rain in a two day stretch pretty much washed everything out. Plus I had a blood clot in my leg which kept me out of the garden for a while.

I had a line on some free flagstone (covering about 10 x 20) from someone with whom I work. But then someone else we worked with wanted to jump in on the deal, thereby limiting the amount of flagstone for the both of us. I just let him have it.

I have a length of about 30' on my south side on which I would like to build a retaining wall, as my yard is gradually sliding on to the neighbor's sidewalk. I figure'd why not build a raised bed out of the wall.

Maybe plant raspberries there.

Concur Yr Analysis!

The Aerobus is like the Davenport, Iowa rollerdam... they had to build it to realize that they'd reached the LIMIT of that design...

Aerobus is HUGE, requires so many people to break even, and yet cannot fly into too many (regular runway) airports...

The Boeing 787 is smaller, lighter, more fuel-efficient and can land/take-off just about ANYWHERE in the world... composite graphite structure, newest fan-jets...

I LOVE American made and Americans!

Charles, suggestion. The autotext generated by the reply buttons inserts the post number... could it be a link to the specific comment? That would make jumping back and forth through replies that can be pages apart much easier, so you can see what people are replying to.

#384. The Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 aren't really competing in the same market though. The A380 is a 500+ seater behemoth designed primarily for congested routes where the lack of slot availability means the only way to increase capacity is to increase the number of passengers per plane. The 787, on the other hand, is a 200-300 seater jet intended to replace the 767 as a smaller intercontinental jet flying on less congested routes.

So an A380 would make more sense flying from Heathrow to JFK, whereas a 787 would be better for routes like Denver-Montreal or Tokyo-Shanghai. In fact, depending on routes, it's quite possible than an ideal airline fleet would include both A380s and 787s.

If you want to make direct comparisons, the Boeing 787-8 is aimed at the A380 (and is arguably inferior) while the new Airbus A350 is intended to counter the 787. Comparing the 787 and A380 to each other is silly.
