RetweetA Submersible in the East River?

Fri, Aug 3, 2007 at 9:48:11 am PDT

A Submarine? A Diving Capsule? What Was It Doing in NYC River?

Authorities are questioning three men after pulling them from a submersible vessel in the East River in Brooklyn, N.Y., according to reports from ABC affiliate WABC.

The men were captured near the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in downtown Brooklyn, near the massive cruise ship the Queen Mary 2, just after 11 a.m.

The intent of the three men being held by police remains unclear, but the initial indication is that it did not appear to be terror-related. They have not been identified by police and no charges have been filed.

Yeah, this is one of those "wait and see" events. I hope it was just some local inventor/engineer types who built there own submersible just to see if they could do it. Still, this looks fishy (no pun intended).

OAKLAND, Calif. — A veteran journalist and newspaper editor who was shot to death on his way to work reportedly received threats before he was murdered in what police are calling a premeditated hit, according to The Oakland Tribune.

Chauncey Bailey, 57, editor of the Oakland Post and a former reporter for The Oakland Tribune, was shot about 7:30 a.m., police said.

Click here to read the full story in the Oakland Tribune.

According to the Tribune, witnesses say a masked man ambushed Bailey and shot him at least three times. The man then fled to an awaiting van and drove away. At least one of the shots hit him in the upper part of the body.

The Tribune reported that the killer knew Bailey's routine in the mornings and shot him before the news editor had any time to react.

Publisher of the Oakland Post, Paul Cobb, said both he and Bailey had received many threats over time but police have asked him not to comment in detail, the Tribune reported
Oakland Police spokesman Roland Holmgren said police don't have a motive for the killing, but it did not appear to be random.

He also said it's not clear whether the attack had anything to do with Bailey's journalism work but investigators would be looking at that angle.

Early Friday police surrounded an Oakland eatery, Your Black Muslim Bakery, which Bailey reportedly had been researching before he was killed.
It remained unclear whether the police activity, a yearlong investigation resulting in more than a dozen being detained, was connected to the killing.

"All of those possibilities will have to be definitely explored and explored thoroughly," he said.

Bailey was shot multiple times in daylight near the county courthouse, Holmgren said. Witnesses to the shooting were cooperating in the investigation, but there were no suspects yet, police said.

Holmgren said the weapon used was not a handgun, but he would not disclose the gun's caliber.

Bailey was a familiar fixture on the local news scene, working at the Tribune for more than a decade and at other area media outlets, including KDIA-AM radio and cable channel Soul Beat TV. Before that, he worked for 10 years at the Detroit News.

In June, Bailey was named editor of the Post, a weekly publication geared toward the Bay Area black community.

Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums said Bailey will be missed.

"It is a tragedy when any person loses his or her life by an act of violence. The crime and violence on Oakland streets presents me with the most painful and difficult challenge I've ever faced," Dellums said in a statement.

In a statement, Oakland Tribune managing editor Martin Reynolds called Bailey "a friend, a valued colleague and a loving father" whose coverage of Oakland's black community was "a tremendous asset" to the newspaper.

Reynolds said he saw Bailey only last week wearing his trademark suit and tie and "we chatted as we always did when we saw each other, and I congratulated him again on being named editor of the Post."

Bailey's death "has left all of us at the Oakland Tribune shocked and deeply saddened," Reynolds said.

Even the other local affiliates aren't covering it. And WABC appears to be downplaying it more than the national ABC NEWS... Something very odd about this.

My office also looks directly at the East River and Brooklyn, and I don't see any unusual brouhaha.

I would have to guess tho that if there was any legitimate reason for this (research, documentary, ship maintenance, etc) that would have all been sorted out by now, and they would have posted a false alarm.

San Jose man arrested in terror probe
ACCUSED OF AIDING `WANTED' BROTHER IN THE PHILIPPINES
By Sean Webby
Mercury News
Article Launched: 08/03/2007 01:31:26 AM PDT

Read the indictment (PDF)

One brother slipped through jungle dragnets, battling army troops with spy planes circling overhead. The other lived quietly in San Jose, tapping away at a computer, Googling about faraway places and making a few visits to the bank.

One brother, Zulkifli Abdhir, 41, remains a wanted terrorist flush with aliases and a $5 million bounty for his leadership role in an Al-Qaida-affiliated terror group called Jemaah Islamiyah.

Jemaah Islamiyah is blamed for most of the major attacks in Indonesia, including the 2002 Bali nightclub bombing that killed more than 200 people.

Federal authorities swooped into Sunnyvale on Thursday morning, arresting Rahmat Abdhir, 43, a.k.a. "Sean Kasem," for allegedly helping his younger brother do some of his bloody work from here.

The elder Abdhir is charged with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, providing material to terrorists, contributing goods and services to a "specially designated global terrorist" (his brother), and false statements, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Using false names, Rahmat Abdhir allegedly sent his sibling about $10,000 for guns, coded e-mails helping him avoid capture, news stories of his bloody exploits and finally a care package filled with chocolate, a rifle scope and ammo, according to the indictment.

"With today's arrest and indictment, we have closed off a channel by which an American citizen was allegedly funding and supplying a

139 usajihad  Fri, Aug 3, 2007 10:42:38am

con'td fugitive designated terrorist with two-way radios and other materials for his operations overseas," said Assistant Attorney General for National Security Kenneth L. Wainstein in a statement. "As this case demonstrates, we will bring the full force of the law against anyone who uses the resources of our economy to support overseas terrorism."
If convicted, the San Jose man could face decades in federal prison.

Rahmat Abdhir's attorney could not be reached for comment.

A 40-page indictment filed by the U.S. Attorney's Office shows a portrait of brotherly love that went toward bullets and bombs.

They are two of 11 siblings of Malaysian descent, according to court documents. And they did most of their talking across the distance by coded e-mail using Malaysian language. They called guns "iron" and government agents "dogs." Bombs were called "prizes" or "presents."

And the younger Abdhir's group was allegedly setting them off in 2006 all around southern Philippines, with deadly results.

Meanwhile, "Sean" in San Jose was creating an electronic clip file of news stories from the United States, news stories that told of troop movements and U.S. spy planes. He was sending these by e-mail to his brother, the indictment alleges.

Soon his brother wanted more than news.

"If I had extra money, I would buy more `iron' . . . because the occupants in the house in front of mine do not have any," he allegedly e-mailed his stateside brother in 2006.

Later that year, after more e-mails talking about the need for weapons, the San Jose Abdhir wire-transferred $5,500 from a Bank of America account to a Malaysian bank account that used their mother's name, according to the indictment.

He later allegedly sent 30 two-way radios.

In October, Zulkifli Abdhir sent an e-mail saying he needed money for a friend who needed "iron" (guns) for protection from "dogs" (government agents). His friend, the e-mail said, had "given away prizes" and was planning on giving away others, the indictment said.

He suggested his brother check out the news.

The next day powerful bombs exploded at a celebration in the Philippines, killing five and injuring 29.

Later, the two exchanged casual e-mails talking about how Zulkifli Abdhir was now a hunted terrorist with a bounty on his head. The San Jose brother e-mailed a news photograph of a Philippine military commander standing in front of a wanted poster for his brother.

And just last month, according to the indictment, "Sean" sent his brother a package that included a rifle scope, manuals for shooting assault rifles, Fruit of the Loom briefs and some bite-size Snickers candy bars.

The package, according to the indictment, had a San Jose return address.

I recall watching a program on the History Channel about the Revolutionary War (1776). George Washington was fighting the Brits, and he had been forced into a retreat. He was trying to stop the British from occupying New York City. There was a genius of an engineer named David Bushnell. Bushnell had designed a submarine. It had a hand-cranked propeller, steering devices, and could be submerged. The idea was for the "pilot" of the submarine to go underwater and affix explosive charges to British war ships tied up in harbour. (An ingenious idea). (The sub was called or nicknamed, The American Turtle -- due to its shape...although it was upright (the "pilot" sat in a chair). Anyway, history buffs (part of the History Channel program) wondered if they could re-make The Turtle. They did indeed...it worked well. (The original "turtle" never actually sank any British battleships, btw.) Anyway, the news report picture of this "sub" in Brooklyn looks like "The Turtle" or a replica.

145 saywhat?  Fri, Aug 3, 2007 10:47:52am

In the comments section posted at Charles' link there are a couple points worth repeating . . .

While we now have every news agency in the country saying that hundreds of bridge's are ready to collapse under our feet any moment, and that's considered responsible journalism, even though only 2 bridges have suffered structural failure in the past quarter century IN THE ENTIRE US, resulting in less then 60 fatalities total, let's not worry about terrorism in NYC, which has suffered 2 successful attacks killing thousands in the past 14 years, and several attempts that have been thwarted. Nothing to see here...

and this:

the USS Turtle was an operational submarine in the American Revolution. It tried to plant bombs on British vessels in New York harbor but got lost in the currents. that havin g been said, heading out in New york waters in a home made submarine is unbelievabley stupid.

I think we saw this ship as it was coming in - we were crossing the Verrazano bridge at 6am Wedn - and looked out and saw this enormous white ship - cruise ship.

I was already panicking while crossing the bridge - for some strange reason - having vivid thoughts of the bridge collapsing - which I chalked up to my vivid imagination although I had never felt this kind of panic before. On a scale of 1-10, it was an 8-9, full fledged panic. Luckily my husband was driving.

They ask an official 30 seconds after an event whether it was terrorists, and the official repsonse is an accurate one, such as: "At this time we have no conclusive evidence that this was a terrorist act."

What you usually hear from the reporter is: "FBI officials have confirmed that this incident is not terrorist related."

Just like asking: "Senator, is it true you beat your wife?"

News story: "Senator X denies beating his wife."

Brooklyn Terrorist Safe House Raided by FBI and DEA

Dean Loren | 27.09.2001 05:58
NY reporter exposes terrorist safe house and drug network operating in Brooklyn, NY. FBI and DEA raid safe house arresting family members for WTC bombing activities and drug trafficking.

Brooklyn Terrorist Safe House Raided September 19, 2001 by FBI and DEA

On September 2, 2001, one week prior to the World Trade Center Incident,
Dean Loren reported Brooklyn's Green Point Islamic Mosque on 602 Leonard Street and Safe House/Candy Store on 87 Norman Ave. as the underground railroad and financing network for the WTC bombers of 1993. The terrorist network was in full operation and currently moving heroin and ammunitions. Sheik Raman had been sheltered in the Norman Avenue Safe House prior to his arrest in New Jersey for the first WTC bombing. See License Plates and Drug Distribution Properties below.

Loren notified Condolezza Rice's NSA Office in Washington on Thursday Sept 6th with the heroin and arms trafficking report with a specific warning of a terrorist attack.

On September 19, 2001, FBI and DEA officials raided the owners of the Norman Avenue Safe House, the Quhshi family, for terrorist activities connected to the WTC incident.

The white mitsubishi observed at the Boston Airport is believed to be owned by "Sammy" the son of the livery car owner on McGuiness Avenue across from Key Foods in Brooklyn. Sammy lives on North Henry Street.

Three women of the Greenpoint Islamic Mosque admitted to having to leave the country prior to September 11 WTC incident. Their husbands and others are still at large in the country.

The vessel bears a striking resemblance to the "Bushnell Turtle," the first American submarine, invented around 1775 in Connecticut by David Bushnell. That sub was designed as a naval weapon, and it was meant to drill into a ship's hull and plant a keg of powder, which would be detonated by a time fuse.

There are ONLY a few possibilities

Low probability possibilities we don't rule out until we know more:

Enthusiasts wanted to see if they could fab a sub, however all states require all watercraft to be registered and it does not appear to have any certification.

They could be American citizens and they either did not want their wives to know they were out of town, wanted to skip the long lines at immigration or were protesting the US government intrusion into their private right to travel

They could be UN employees certifying the international nature of the East River

High probability possibilities:

Could be illegal immigrants and they were dropped from a ship as part of a high dollar alien smuggling ring

They could be smugglers or drug dealers but there is no report of drugs being found.

Or they are terrorist scum up to no good.

A little (illogical) phobia of mine: I've always been a bit nervous driving over bridges... and the tragedy in Minnesota is one of my worst nightmares. Whenever I approach the Tappan Zee, I pray there are no traffic jams and try to get across as fast as I can.

The Tappan Zee. Not my favorite bridge. I try to avoid that as much as possible unless heading up to the Moheegan Sun. Unfortunately, you don't need a submersible for that bridge. It's going to fall down by itself.

False alarm. It's just the SS Jimmy Carter.

Is it rabbit proof?

Maybe it's some weird cure for hemorrhoids.

Gee ... Maybe it is a Chinese manufactured yacht.

No - a Chinese yacht would be equipped with a screen door below the waterline.

I know, 24 hour rule, but the whole thing just don't seem like a good old fashioned "dumb-ass attack".

That is an antique UFO...It looks like a bong with the top bowl left off. I saw one just like it when I was on a class tour of Area 54 thirty years ago.

An eyewitness to the Brooklyn incident say it fly in "kind of like something that is flushed down the toilet, then it splashed".

Obviously the reason they will not identify the "men" is because they are ALIENS.

The newer model UFO's that I have heard about about are a lot more streamlined...They have gotten away from the bong design and now use a design that looks like a big rolled up joint. This new design is made to fly faster and use a lot less gas. It's amazing the technology the aliens have been developing!

Have we got their names yet?
Because two 13-year-old boys slapped a couple of girls' butts in Oregon and we got THEIR names right away![Link: www.examiner.com...]
Oh, and they could get 10 years in prison plus a lifetime as registered sex offenders if convicted.

re: #29 zombie

Part of some historical re-creation?

Documentary?

That's kind of what I was thinking. It looks alot like what David Bushnells Turtle would have looked like.

208 Malatrope  Fri, Aug 3, 2007 1:50:05pm

Wikipedia already has the story:

"On 3 August 2007 three men were arrested while piloting and escorting a replica of the Turtle within 200 feet of the Queen Mary 2 without authorization at New York City's cruise ship terminal. The replica was created by New York artist Philip "Duke" Riley and two men from Rhode Island, one of whom claimed to be a descendant of David Bushnell."

Arrgh. I see that I'm a day late and a dollar short, again. Apologies.

re: #179 ProUSA

The vessel bears a striking resemblance to the "Bushnell Turtle," the first American submarine, invented around 1775 in Connecticut by David Bushnell. That sub was designed as a naval weapon, and it was meant to drill into a ship's hull and plant a keg of powder, which would be detonated by a time fuse.

Gee sounds like something the followers of Mo would like:

1. Really old technology.
2. Capable of blowing stuff up.

Darn it man, you beat me to it.
