Black Muslim Bakery Bilked Oakland

Thu, Aug 9, 2007 at 11:09:28 am PDT

Oakland politicians are in hot water over their support for the “Your Black Muslim Bakery,” now implicated in several murders: Black Muslim Bakery squandered job-training money.

Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums and Rep. Barbara Lee of Oakland found themselves in the unwelcome spotlight this week over the letters of support they wrote on behalf of the notorious Your Black Muslim Bakery, but they aren’t the only politicos who have supported the group over the years.

At the height of its power back in 1996, the splinter Muslim group - whose members were implicated in last week’s slaying of newspaper editor Chauncey Bailey - got the city to approve an advance on a $1.2 million federal redevelopment loan to launch training program for health care jobs.

Within three months, the group had burned through $275,000 without turning out a single graduate.

They did, however, spend $650 a month to lease a Cadillac.

Another $44,000 supposedly went to consulting fees, $10,500 went for security and $7,500 for advertising on a local cable station, where then-leader Yusuf Bey had a weekly TV show.

When asked to explain what was going on, the Black Muslim Bakery cadre - in one of their typical tactics - marched in unison from the bakery to City Hall, then entered the council chambers like a precision drill team, lining up along the room’s back walls.

They then asked for another $70,000 to keep the project going. And they got it, with the council voting 6-2 to grant the funds - minus the money for the Cadillac.

“The message was very clear - we are watching you,” said City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente, who cast one of the votes against the group’s request.

The school never opened.

How bizarre, the idea that lining up and marching "like a precision drill team" makes someone qualified to 1) run a school for healthcare workers, or 2) receive public money to do so.

Seems to me it makes them qualified to -- well -- march like a drill team.

Of course, the money's not so good in the precision walking market.

Bubble gum with Nazi sticker sold in Israel
Thu Aug 9, 2007 1:06AM EDT

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An Israeli woman was astounded to find a sticker tattoo of a Nazi soldier inside a pack of bubble gum she had bought at her local store in the Jewish state, an Israeli newspaper reported on Thursday.

"A surprise awaits you," the Maariv daily said the pack stated, showing a picture of a pink wrapper that read "Roll Bubble Gum" alongside what it said was the sticker, which showed a Nazi officer in uniform and wearing a swastika armband.

The newspaper quoted Orna Gutman, 23, as telling its Web site NRG Maariv the pack's label was in Arabic and English and stated the gum was made in China but did not name the importer.

Politics as usual. They came as an interest group and got the money. No one bothered to ever see whether the money was spent as intended and it takes the murder of an editor of a local paper to get people to look closer at this organization.

Nice.

But this is also business as usual. Every day there are organizations and entities that get earmarks or pork or legislative items (whatever your locality calls pork these days), and some do good work - helping people recover from addiction, providing health care, cleaning up neighborhoods, etc., but others turn out to be nothing more than patronage mills and ways to buy votes. Unless some kind of allegation of misconduct is lodged against an organization, there's usually no one checking to see if the money is going as intended or what is going on.

It took the murder of the editor to get people to focus on this organization and no one should be surprised by what they find.

Bogus "community groups" have been squandering federal and state money ever since the Great Society began. All they have to do is be suitably 'deprived' or 'disadvantaged' and have authentic minority status and the money flows to them with little or any oversight.

Bubble gum with Nazi sticker sold in Israel

What probably happened here is that an East Jerusalem store bought some gum that was produced for the Arab market, and it ended up in a Jewish customer's hands by mistake. You have to wonder how come the Nazis are so popular among the Arabs, when the Jews are just like the Nazis.

If memory serves, isn't Rep. Barbara Lee of Oakland the only one (maybe one or two more but I think she was the only fool) that voted against us entering Afghanistan after 9/11 and attacking the Taliban?

I won't elaborate about her being more stupid than a box of rocks - that is obvious to all. But I guess I mistakenly took her vote as a dove rather than a frickin' terrorist loving traitor.

Sounds like San Fran's problems might pale compared to Oakland. This makes me glad the Raiders have become the laughingstock of the NFL.

Congresswoman Lee's willingness to stand on principle earned her international acclaim when she was the only member of Congress to vote against giving President Bush a blank check to wage war after the September 11th attacks. In addition to being one of Congress' most vocal opponents to the war in Iraq, Congresswoman Lee has been a leader in promoting policies that foster international peace, security and human rights. In 2006, she successfully blocked funds from being used to establish permanent military bases in Iraq. She sponsored legislation disavowing the doctrine of preemptive war and has been a leader in the bipartisan effort in Congress to end the ongoing genocide in Darfur, Sudan.

He tells old Al that he and pals can hit the road - my brother-in-law ain't asking the regulars to leave. The old man couldn't believe that some punk would have the unmitigated gall to deny his request and gets nasty.

My brother-in-law walks over with phone in hand and ask "how would you like to talk to 911 then Al (by first name)?"

They leave.

OT: Teenager and Man Arrested in Newark Shootings

The shooting took place on Saturday about 11:30 p.m. as Natasha Aeriel, 19, her brother Terrance, 18, Iofemi Hightower, 20, and Dashon Harvey, 20, were listening to music and chatting in the school playground. When they noticed a group of young men assembling nearby, the police say, Ms. Aeriel and her friends sensed trouble and began sending text messages to each other suggesting that they leave.

But before they could go, the four students were confronted by the men, who shot Ms. Aeriel, then marched the other three to a concrete wall, lined them up and killed them. Ms. Aeriel suffered a bullet wound to the back of her ear but survived.

This isn't over yet. Hope there's some trustworthy protection for Ms Aeriel.

I wonder if the victims had their credit cards taken? /extreme sarcasm

I was an Oakland police officer in the '80's and '90's and regularly ran into this lot. They'd show up at crime scenes in their bow ties and try to intimidate the police from doing our job. Excuse us, we're the police, you're not! Or their unlicensed 'security' company would show up to provide security at clubs. We'd show up and tell the club to shut down because they didn't have legitimate security as required. Scary thing was these guys would just stand there, arms folded across their chests and stare into space and not say a word and refuse to leave until we told them "clubs closed, you can go away now"! In reality their only goal in showing up was to try to incite an 'incident' with the police, unfortunately for them we were quite a bit smarter than they and never took the bait

Al Davis story - I was a watch commander one Saturday night and got a call from Al's assistant asking that we provide a four motorcycle escort for him to the stadium next day since Al had almost been late for the game because of traffic last week. I politely declined and got another call within minutes from a more senior assistant demanding the motorcycles, sort of "you don't know who you're messing with lieutenant, what's your name?" stuff. I told the guy that Al should maybe leave earlier for the game if he wanted to be on time and hung up. Never heard another word.

This was $275,000 advance on a $1.2 million federal grant. Then a $70,000 extra. Did the bakery get the federal money and reimburse the City of Oakland ?

Trafalgar - last week here in San Francisco, there were several meetings, both public and non-public, about some construction going on in Bayview/Hunter's Point (SF's majority black neighborhood for those that don't know).

The NOI "religious leader" showed up at the public meeting with a whole phalanx of "security" men, who went upstairs in City Hall and stood around the rotunda looking down onto the main floor. They were told to leave but simply refused.

At a Dept of Public Health meeting that was NOT a public event, the same "religious leader" and his goons burst into the meeting and refused to leave.

This intimidation has increased substantially in the last few months.

No one here will do a damn thing about it.

And the loan - one of several the council made that year to help disadvantaged businesses - was never repaid.

A reply to myself. What the hell is a "disadvantaged business"? They know it's going to fail before they give the money? These people get more advantage out of the word "disadvantaged."

Let's see, Hmm, giving money to people who have a group with lots of ex-cons in it, and a religion the justifies lying to(let alone killing) the infidel, and known crooked leaders....Who would've thought that was a bad idea? And taking out the money to pay for the Cadillac, while still giving them money, that certainly did send a strong message. Unfortunately the message was "we are dupes, 'suckas', if you will". I think the key is to stop funding Oakland's government.

I am trying to work the word 'jackassery' into my rant. I think it describes well everything that happened here.

When are people going to wake up to the threat that these people pose? Just cause they're selling a decent fish sandwich and sweet potato pie doesn't make them nice or innocuous. OK, I'm counting to 10 and breathing slowly. In, out, in, out....

227 descolada9  Thu, Aug 9, 2007 1:51:14pm

Yeah, it would be nice to see Barbara Lee (D-Dingbat) suffer some kind of repercussion for this, but we all know that she won't. And it would be nice if the city council were called to task for being such noodle-spined twits, but we know that they won't.

Can we please, please get rid of California now and declare them a separtist state?

228 Highrise  Thu, Aug 9, 2007 1:55:57pm

The corruption in Oakland is thick. The muslim influence is definitely there...this story didn't surprise me when it broke...not one bit.

But they'll be counted as a fringe part of America...nothing to prevent here....move along..it's a figment of our imagination..and I guess dearbornista is as well.

Given that the bakery was going through bankruptcy, I highly doubt the city ever saw a dime back from them.

I know De la Fuente. He is a stand up guy. He got hosed last year when the black government worker class and the white Bay Area hippies conspired to elect an empty shirt, Ron Dellums, with absolutely no experience in municipal government.

Ignacio is no angel, but he would have been a bitchin' mayor. The whole spectacle is sickening.

Trafalgar - I was away, but now I'm back. Saw your comment about moving to St Michaels. Must be a fine place to live. How often do the moonbats protest at either house?

By the way, Oakland is getting so bad that they have called in the Highway Patrol to prowl the streets. Oakland has a huge shortage of cops. Who would want to bother?

Ploome - filming it is a waste of time. This is the Bay Area. You think the SF Chronicle's going to care?

Really, no one much cares here. SF is down to about 5% black. They have a few "leaders" who holler and scream, but in the end, no one pays them any attention. The current mayor wails all the time about the murders in the 'hood, but nothing changes. Now, the local gang thugs are busily killing each other. The other day, a couple shot at each other IN THE TOURIST AREA...boy, did that get the front page!

Blacks here can kill each other all they want..just stay away from the hotel district, please.

buzz- actually, this city is about 30% Chinese, 17% Hispanic, 45% "white", and the rest is black, Vietnamese, assorted Pacific Islanders (esp Filipino and Samoan), Russians, and a very large illegal population from Latin America and Asia.

Used to be that gay people were a huge part of the population, but that has been dropping as they (we) have moved to the burbs. I left in 99 and went to the East Bay (hence the nick). Life is SO much better there.

239 Perplexed  Thu, Aug 9, 2007 5:18:57pm
When asked to explain what was going on, the Black Muslim Bakery cadre - in one of their typical tactics - marched in unison from the bakery to City Hall, then entered the council chambers like a precision drill team, lining up along the room’s back walls.

Intimidation plain and simple. Time to get those RICO indictments guys.

re: #223 Walter E. Wallis

Sir, he never got to be the chair because the Republicans won; he was the ranking member and would have become chairman had that not happened. That guy becoming the 'leader' of the Armed Services Committee would have been a freaking disaster; it was bad enough that he was Ranking Member.

The moonbats don't protests here at all. The good ole boys would run them right out of town. But Michael Jackson was reported as wanting to buy a house here recently. The local paper went off on him and he seems to have disappeared. He would totally stand out here and would be run out of town too. Tony Snow lives here too by the way.
