 Retweetzinni return watch

Sun, Mar 31, 2002 at 10:09:17 am PST

In the latest Palestinian poll, 81.1% support Yasser Arafat, and 76.8% do not trust Anthony Zinni.

Hence, I’m starting the Zinni Return Watch. I’ll be surprised if he’s still in Israel at the end of this week. Must suck to be him right now.

An alarming facet of that poll is that more than 50% answered "No" or "I don't know" when asked the question: "Do you believe or not that it is the right of both Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security?"

Zinni is there to coordinate war. The 'peace' mission is a cover for that.

He will not return until Iraq is defeated.

Which Palestinian pollster is this? One was interviewed several weeks ago on The News Hour, and he seemed pretty comfortable with the basic anti-Semitic Palestinian line. Independent Television seems to provide many of these interviews and pieces from Palestine for The News Hour, and the overall level of coverage is the sort of gee-whiz non-skeptical coverage you used to see from places like Sandinista Nicaragua. I suspect the Palestinian "man on the street" has a pretty savvy idea of what answers to give the local PA-endorsed "pollster" -- if indeed the numbers are based on actual samples. Same goes for the "Potemkin families" interviewed on The News Hour where the father violently says he hopes all six of his sons will become martyrs along with the one who already has.

The question is, where is dissent within the Palestinians? These folks must be frightened to death to say anything but the approved line. But it's also the fault of US news organizations not to look more deeply into these "polls" or report more skeptically on opinion by what are always likely hand-picked sources.

You're assuming those news organizations have any interest in looking for Palestinian dissidents. My impression is just the opposite.

Must suck to be a former 4 star general and be used to having entire divisions of troops at your beck and call (he's former centcom, currently held by tommy franks) and now have to deal with these guys without that muscle to back him up.

For my taste, these solos (of some 50s blues guitarists) are exemplary because what is being played seems honest and, in a musical way, a direct extension of the personality of the men who played them. -- January 1977.
