The Mainstream Media and Iraq

Wed, Aug 29, 2007 at 10:32:27 am PDT

Here’s a terrific post from Karl at Protein Wisdom, a monumental, heavily-sourced overview of the establishment media’s coverage of the Iraq War: The Big Picture(s).

There’s so much malfeasance, sloppiness, propaganda, and outright bias on display here that it’s a little overwhelming—but this is why so many of us are unhappy with the mainstream media. It didn’t start with Scott Beauchamp.

So biased and sloppy even a French mime can spot it.

Creating their own 'reality' in Iraq is the MSM's last, desperate attempt to maintain the power they enjoyed during the era of monopolistic broadcasting ability.

No question about that, and I'll have to make time to read it all.

However, it lacks nuance and didn't pass through the proper editorial layers and filter, did it?

If so, it should stand without correction.

Among the stories from Baqubah almost entirely missed by establishment media was the US military’s discovery of mass graves in a nearby village. Michael Yon photographed and videotaped Iraqi and US soldiers disinterring the remains of adults and children. The media generally ignored the story, even after Yon offered map coordinates, names of Iraqi and US Army officials, his photographs and videotape, and ultimately permission to use his reports free of charge.

What a noble act- the story was more important than Mr. Yon making money. That's journalistic integrity if you ask me, and it's sorely lacking in far too many msm outlets as this story clearly shows. How deplorable that even when offered it for free the msm didn't bother to report the atrocity in Baqubah- as though we didn't have the right to see the handiwork of the people our soldiers are fighting.

The media actually lost the Viet Nam War with a big push from Walter Cronkite. US troops took casualties. Surprise it was a war , but never lost any major military engagement.
General Giap who was the North Viet commander said in his memoirs that they were so battered in the Tet Offensive that they were prepared to sue for peace. They were amazed the way that the media spun it here.
It is happening again. The troops are being vilified and the enemy is being encouraged. All the head chopping & barbarity from the enemy? Never mind US troops put panties on a guys head.

OT
Since we all know how much the RoP loves dogs, I thought I'd post this from a friend's blog:

Time for me is short this morning (as usual), so I settled for the following e-mailed item from a dear friend's spouse. If you have read it before, I apologize. If not, perhaps it will become the catalyst for some deep thought in your day as it has mine...

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a
ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's
owners Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy,
Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were
hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I
told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker,
and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for
the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they
thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to
observe the procedure.

They felt as though Shane might learn something from
the experience

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat
as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so
calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I
wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a
few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition
without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together
for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud
about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than
human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly,
piped up, "I know why."

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his
mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more
comforting explanation.

He said, "People are born so that they can learn how
to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the
time and being nice, right?" The six-year-old
continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so
they don't have to stay as long."

Live simply.
Love generously.
Care deeply.
Speak kindly.

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn
things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your
face to be pure ecstasy.

Take naps.

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady
tree.

When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire
body.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when you have had
enough.

Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you're not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close
by and nuzzle them gently.

Be always grateful for each new day

South Korea is planning to build "Robot Land," an industrial city built specifically for the robotics industry. It'll have all sorts of facilities for the research, development, and production of robots, as well as things like exhibition halls and even a stadium for robot-on-robot competitions. The $530 million project should get underway sometime in 2009, which means we should see our own robot city here in the States around 2013.

Morning real....well I don't trust Iran....Iran could have hijacked that ship...only time will tell.

82 lawhawk  Wed, Aug 29, 2007 11:06:54am

Brilliant. Excellent work in compiling all that information.

Still, that scrapes just the surface of the problems with the reporting from Iraq and on the GWoT in general. How many reporters are actually in Afgahnistan reporting on the situation there? I suspect that it's even fewer than those in Iraq, even as it remains a central front on dealing with al Qaeda and the Taliban who sheltered them. How many are in Pakistan able to report on the Islamists there?

Are we relying too much on stringers whose own interests in pushing an agenda overwhelm the facts? I think we most definitely are.

Are stringers being properly vetted to weed out those who are pushing an insurgent/terrorist agenda? Nope. Given the repeated signs that the media doesn't have a problem with agitprop being published, I'd say they probably don't know. I wouldn't go so far as to say that they all don't care that they're being used to further an anti-American agenda - but there are clearly some journalists out there who wouldn't have a problem with this.

The wire services are being used and/or complicit in journalistic misconduct - and can be held to account by an increasingly sophisticated group of readers - bloggers - who can pick apart inconsistencies, lies, omissions, and do the fact checking that simply doens't get done by the media elites who act as gatekeepers and push a narrative even as the story changes...

Quite an impresive piece of work. Great job Karl!

Don't think the MSM is desperate?

When the Center for Media and Public Affairs made a nonpartisan evaluation of network news broadcasts, it found that during the active war against Saddam Hussein, 51 percent of the reports about the conflict were negative. Six months after the land battle ended, 77 percent were negative; in the 2004 general election, 89 percent were negative; by the spring of 2006, 94 percent were negative.

Can't report the facts? Just scream: We're Losing! louder and more often.

People of New York State here is your tax dollars at work

(CBS/AP) TARRYTOWN, N.Y. Suicide prevention telephones have been activated on the approaches to one of the country's largest bridges in hopes that people intent on jumping to their deaths can be dissuaded by one last human voice.

More than 25 people have made fatal jumps from the Tappan Zee Bridge into the Hudson River in the past 10 years, the state Thruway Authority said.

The four phones -- two each on the Rockland and Westchester county sides -- provide direct links to the Lifeline suicide prevention hot line, which would connect callers to counselors at LifeNet or Covenant House, the authority said Tuesday. State troopers stationed in Tarrytown would be sent to the phones.

Look...the media has chosen sides on EVERY issue, not just the war. For example, look on the MSM sites today. There is a big story about a donor to the Clinton campaign who is a fugitive. Lead story everywhere except fox news is the anniversary of katrina and a reminder as to the problems...of course it was all Bush's fault. Seriously, check it out. Check out foxnews, then MSNBC and the Clinton News Network (CNN)...NO mention of Clinton fundraising...

Just fired off this email to CNN:

This is in response to the story titled "Consumers shun adjustable rate mortgages." I am a mortgage broker and found this story alarming.

From the link to the article, you say:

"Consumers are shunning adjustable rate mortgages as interest rates skyrocket, according to a new report."

Then I went to the article and saw this:

Consumers are shunning adjustable-rate mortgages in droves as rates surged to levels not seen in over six years, data from an industry trade group showed Wednesday.

The Mortgage Bankers Association said borrowing costs on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages dropped to the lowest level in weeks, but rates on one-year adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs) surged to 6.51 percent from 5.84 percent in the week ended Aug. 24, its largest weekly jump on record and highest level since January 2001."

First of all conforming ARMs are not 'skyrocketing' as you would have people believe. I am offering today rates on 3/1 to 10/1 ARMs between 5.875% to 6.375%.

Second, one year ARMs are at 5.50% today, not surging to 6.51%.

Is it CNN's policy to report false infomation to the public for some sort of of unknown agenda?

The phones are the cheaper alternative to building new fences that would discourage jumpers. And the TZB needs to be replaced because it's functionally obsolete and in poor condition (options are under consideration, but spending on a new fencing system isn't a good use of money at this point).

Also, consider the costs of having SAR go and try to recover the bodies. That's a considerable cost and risk to those crews. The phones are a bargain in comparison.

I've never said the media isn't biased. If I see someone make a comment I think is untrue, I'll sometimes say so -- but I've never said the media isn't biased. Quite the opposite.

I'm still reading the 'Protein Wisdom' entry at the moment. I agree with much of it. But I also notice that many of his backup sources on the ridiculousness of the modern American media -- and it is ridiculous in many ways -- are themselves mainstream media citations. So the media isn't monolithic, isn't one big factory burping out a single product. There are people within the industry who recognize its many problems -- one of the greatest of which is bias.

re: #82 lawhawk

How many reporters are actually in Afgahnistan reporting on the situation there? I suspect that it's even fewer than those in Iraq, even as it remains a central front on dealing with al Qaeda and the Taliban who sheltered them.

Good point. After all, it is the leftists whining about how Iraq is distracting us from really going after al-qaeda in Afghanistan- where the war on terror is really located. Yet the msm doesn't reinforce this point by giving it coverage worthy of the so-called central battlefront.

I'd guess that if you crunched the numbers, the coverage on Afghanistan would mirror the coverage of Iraq- less airtime as we win, fewer journalists on the ground, and the same issues with sources. I think some journos were "hoping" to relive Vietnam, the younger ones hoping to have their own- in Iraq or Afghanistan. Now they're trying to manufacture it since Vietnam it ain't.

It's entirely intentional. People inclined to take issue with a critique of the MSM will have more difficulty doing so when the sources are MSM journos themselves. In addition, the distinction is made between reports from embeds (even MSM embeds) and "hotel journalism."

192 Opinionated  Wed, Aug 29, 2007 12:37:55pm

Would be interesting to see the reaction at the Leftist loon sites to this:

Israel urged US to attack Iran - not Iraq

WASHINGTON - Israeli officials warned the George W Bush administration that an invasion of Iraq would be destabilizing to the region and urged the United States instead to target Iran as the primary enemy, according to former Bush administration official Lawrence Wilkerson.

Wilkerson, then a member of the US State Department's policy planning staff and later chief of staff for secretary of state Colin Powell, recalled in an interview that the Israelis reacted immediately to indications that the Bush administration was thinking of war against Iraq. After the Israeli government picked up the first signs of that intention, said Wilkerson, "The Israelis were telling us Iraq is not the enemy - Iran is the enemy."

Wilkerson describes the Israeli message to the Bush administration in early 2002 as being, "If you are going to destabilize the balance of power, do it against the main enemy."

The warning against an invasion of Iraq was "pervasive" in Israeli communications with the US administration, Wilkerson recalled. It was conveyed to the administration by a wide range of Israeli sources, including political figures, intelligence, and private citizens.

I recall -- back in 2004 (?) -- military people complaining (not about mainstream media) but about communications, in general. An American military person noted that nothing could be done (of a significance nature) without Iraqis (secretly?) taking note, and spreading the word. Many Iraqis are illiterate, without cell phones, yet, "news" was conveyed -- through word of mouth. And this is not all that surprising -- Iraqis under Saddam lived under a hideous, barbarous, tyrannical regime and so surreptitious (spy?) communication networks formed (under Saddam's radar, of course). Many, many elements (after the fall of Saddam) in Iraqi society could benefit....including criminal ones. So, the moment anyone stepped off a plane at Baghdad airport -- they were sized up. (I recall reading how that so-called Christian "PeaceKeeper's Team" was kidnapped within hours of their arrival in Iraq.)

So, I have to laugh -- to plunk western "journalists" into Iraq -- what will you get? One of a number of sorts -- the "hotel" journalist (I believe it was CBC -- which btw did not send any "journalist" into Iraq at all -- which related the derogatory stories about these "hotel" journalists, revealing the rhyming nicknames for said "hotel" journalists, and how much they were disliked by the other journalists, etc.); the "in-the-field" journalists (the "stringers" -- again the ones the CBC gives a thumbs' up to, but who the CBC also notes are the ones most likely to be killed -- and many have been killed because they don't have the necessary military survival/support skills); the brave, in-the-field types supported by major networks (but not officially "embedded" -- those like Michael Ware who roam around freely); and the embedded journalists (these the CBC writes off as mere "propagandists" for the U.S. military). i think each one of these types of journalists adds to our knowledge of what's going on in Iraq -- but (as with anything) each also has its drawbacks.

Iranian police seized a foreign-registered ship carrying 500,000 litres of smuggled fuel in the Gulf on Wednesday and detained 18 people on board, Iranian media said.

The ship, carrying gas oil, was bound for Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and its crew were from Iraq, Indonesia and the Philippines, 18 foreign nationals were said to be detained. "This morning a big vessel in the waters of the Islamic Republic of Iran ... was identified and during inspections this this large consignment of gas oil was discovered," regional police chief Mansour Dashti told the Mehr News Agency.

Ok, we have Dinnerjacket's speech yesterday, the continual supply of arms to the Badr brigades and Al Qaeda, the firing on Iraqi kurd villages last week, 50 Quds force loose in Baghdad, firing between Shiites at the pilgrimage -- badr vs. badr, one the Iraqi southern stripe, the other Mookie's boys. Now we have Straits of Hormuz II.

Is it beginning to add up?

203 J.S.  Wed, Aug 29, 2007 4:12:43pm

I happened to watch a program on a cable channel (it's called I-channel) featuring a panel discussion about Canada's role in the War on Terror.

One of the panelists was a spokesman for Canada's military. I think he did a brilliant job in explaining what Canada's role is in Afghanistan, etc. (He also, btw, discussed a naval mission called "Operation Apollo" which I had NOT heard about -- is that thanks to the MSM (such as the CBC) which is always harping on the presumed "failures"?) Operation Apollo protected the Sea of Oman and intercepted any fleeing Taliban from Afghanistan. It was a true success -- a "brilliant mission" -- but it went virtually unheard of in the MSM presses, here in Canada.

Anyway, it was an excellent program - no lies, no propaganda -- just the facts. I think we need more of these kinds of programs -- the ones without the "spin" ; without the hyped-up screaming...the hyperbole...

These turdbuckets don't get it. They are putting the foot baths in unisex bathrooms. I am gonna go out on a limb and say that your average Muslim won't be washing his feet in the presence of a woman. Especially a non-believer.

You're thinking of your old college days of communal bathrooms. Dollars to donuts it will be a private bathroom stall so that Mohammed can avoid the temptresses.

However, as other people have said, there's going to be alot of other crud entering those footbaths besides foot water.

Worse, I would hate to find out that alphabet soup “news” outlets have been getting payola from enemy agents to promote their propaganda.

There have been far too many MSM stringers who just happened to on the scene of a terrorists attack. And, very few of these MSM stringers film successful raids by US troops. Something does not add up.

re: #209 Ledger1

"There have been far too many MSM stringers who just happened to on the scene of a terrorists attack. And, very few of these MSM stringers film successful raids by US troops."

I think the fault lies with the editors, the decision-makers, at the MSM news desks. It's their decision whether or not to pick up a story submitted by a stringer (a stringer, after all, is just a freelancer trying to sell his wares). So if a news corporation buys the work from a pro-insurgent propagandist and airs it on the nightly news -- whose fault is that?

Also, the stringers won't be filming the raids of US troops -- that's the job for the "embedded" reporters. (I believe that the reason why we don't see much of the work from the "embedded' reporters is because their work is written off as "propaganda" -- that's what the CBC, for example, has alleged...the work from "embeds" is "tainted." -- I don't believe this is an accurate or fair assessment -- an embedded journalists' work may or may not be too slanted...But, the point is that the standard refrain is that embeds are too skewed. Again it's a problem with the editorial desks at major "news" outlets -- the ABC , NBC, CBS executives, etc.)
