Wednesday Morning Open

Here’s an open thread for a sunny Wednesday morning…

I received several emails complaining that the new comment rating system was slowing down page loading, especially on longer threads. So I looked into it, and discovered that I’d forgotten to index a rather vital database field, used in the lookup of rating data. Without the index it still worked, but very slowly, because for every rating it had to search the entire database table. After adding the index, the lookup is very fast; I ran some tests and the impact on the loading of long threads is now very slight.

Remember, if you hate, hate, hate the ratings, you can choose not to see them at all, in the Account Management page.

And don’t tell anyone, but registration’s open again for a little while.

UPDATE at 9/12/07 9:30:21 am:

Registration is now closed, with 74 hatchlings in 25 minutes.

 Frank says:

This is Frank Zappa saying, Don't do speed. Speed turns you into your parents. -- this used to play OFTEN as a public service announcement(PSA) on radio station WHFS at 102.5 FM in bethesda,MD.USA during the early '70's. it was followed by a nearly inaudible whisper, "...but grass and acid are o.k.", which may have been frank, or one of the mothers.
