Update on UTSA Muslim Student Association: The Satire Excuse
The Muslim Student Association at the University of Texas at San Antonio is doing everything they can to distance themselves from that appalling video posted at YouTube by “dawahworks.”
They’re calling the video a “satire” and denying that it was connected to the MSA at all. Even though they invited the “filmmaker” on campus specifically to do these videos.
Last week I wrote, “the most likely explanation is that the Muslim Student Association at the University of Texas at San Antonio is feeling some heat today, and removed it themselves,” and that’s exactly what happened.
The student group invited an amateur filmmaker named SaadImam to campus to make a series of videos designed to educate students about Islam. In the process, however, he made a video of his own — one that implies that Jews perpetrated the 9-11 terrorist attacks.
The video, which first appeared on YouTube about a week ago but has since been removed, features SaadImam asking a Jewish student what he believes is the Jews’ greatest accomplishment in America. Before the student can answer, SaadImam repeats “9-11” several times, drawing a puzzled look from the student. SaadImam now says that segment was meant as a joke.
Called “The Missing Hijab 2 & the Jew,” the clip also features an antagonistic interview with a female Muslim student about her choice not to wear a hijab, or head scarf. In the video, SaadImam says he is helping out the Muslim Student Association.
Yusif Mohammad, president of the Muslim Student Association, however, said he knew nothing about the video until he was alerted to it by Barry McKinney, the university’s student activities director, on Friday.
“We have nothing to do with that video, and we don’t endorse that video,” Mohammad said. “In a time like this, when Muslims are under fire, it is not the type of video to be making, even if it is supposed to be funny. I feel it is inappropriate.”
So who is this “satirical filmmaker?”
Mohammad said he invited SaadImam, a personal friend who converted to Islam while serving a prison term for attempted murder, to campus to help film a series of man-on-the-street videos to see how much university students knew about Islam. …
On Monday, SaadImam said the 9-11 bit was not serious; he was merely poking fun at conspiracy theorists who blame the Israeli government for the terrorist attacks. He said he doesn’t personally believe Jews masterminded the attacks, but he isn’t sure if al-Qaida is to blame.
“I don’t know who did it,” SaadImam said. “I don’t care if Irish leprechauns did it, it affects nobody but Muslims in a negative way.”

UPDATE at 9/12/07 12:50:31 pm:
Oh brother. Earlier today I received an email from dawahworks@gmail.com, and now he’s posted it at his web site as well. The BS Meter goes off the scale on this one:
The Jewish “victim” speaks…
i was in the Missing hijab and the jew
It is so horrible how 1 video created so much hate
even satire can cause hate
i hope no one at your misjad was harassed especially you
when you first did the interview i did not understand your satire later as I hanged out with your group i learned and realized that you use satire a lot
this fact resulted in a lot of hate as a result of people not thinking you were using satire people thought you actually were harassing me next time be more careful with your satire as people make take you seriouslyp.s. next time better blame it on the scientologists
Notice: no signature or name attached. Oh yeah. I believe this.
Any UTSA students who read LGF: if you can find the Jewish student harassed by this ex-con, I’d love to know if he really sent this email.

Here’s some more “satire” from dawahworks, an excerpt from a longer rant, in which SaadImam dresses up like an American soldier and does a mocking imitation of a redneck forcing Muslims to accept the evil Democracy.
